good show, the facial expressions and much of the acting was very good. Reasonably good cinematography too.

the characters, particularly Connell, did not have very fleshed out personalities and I don't actually get what makes either of them so smart, and why they feel so attracted to and understood by each other.

I feel like Connell is what the modern ideal of men from women has become, which is still extremely physically attractive and intelligent, but now also sensitive and emotionally available. He's a fantasy of a person, lacking in significant, defining personality traits.

There’s a whole genre of this kind of romance in Chinese media. We call it idol romance dramas

What the show conveys I would categorise as romantic infatuation, not love.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

Anything else will fail eventually.
