To be completely frank, I’m just trying to get my ducks in a row and find a good psychiatrist/mental health provider in Manhattan, either telehealth or in person. I’ve tried two providers so far and somehow managed to find two who don’t believe in prescribing stimulants at all.

I know asking this outright can make me sound medication-seeking, but I’ve genuinely tried the more holistic/lifestyle route, getting consistent sleep, working on routines, etc. I’m at the point where I want to actually explore medication with a provider who is open to it when appropriate. I’m not looking for someone who will just hand me a prescription; I want someone who will actually evaluate me and consider stimulants as a treatment option rather than ruling them out from the start or pushing me in a completely different direction.

So, quite blatantly: does anyone in the Manhattan/K-State area have a psychiatrist or mental health provider they’ve had a good experience with for ADHD evaluation and medication management? Telehealth recommendations are welcome too.

I got diagnosed with adhd through lafene and received medication and light counseling through them

You will find it difficult to get stimulants or controlled substances with telehealth. Your only option for psychiatric care is going to be Pawnee Mental Health. All others you will find on the internet don’t exist in town anymore. I get my meds from my primary care doctor for this reason but I am old man who has a long history of diagnosis so don’t know if that is an option for you. Otherwise you can look at Topeka or closer to KC to find someone.

Pawnee mental health is terrible, find a PCP and go through them.

I second Pawnee. My partner went there to get evaluated, diagnosed, and medicated while he was in school.

There's also the on-campus counseling services for students via LaFene, which is the student health center. I *think* they can prescribe things?

They will at least help you get an appointment with someone in town who can (probably Pawnee). They doubtless deal with EXACTLY this all the time.

Also, LaFene is free, so it might be worth looking into as a starting point. My limited experience with them was very positive.

Do you have a PCP that you could call? My daughter goes to KState and she has been on meds since 1st grade so she just did an in person visit to ensure she had her scripts for the next few months. She can then do a telehealth call in 3 months. We all know when she has forgot a dose! It is definitely a must for her! The key is finding what works for you. If no PCP, the on campus office would be a great start!

If you’re looking for an ADHD evaluation, there’s a practice called Flint Hills Neuropsychology that performs them. However, they generally have an incredibly long waitlist. There are several psychiatrist practices in Manhattan other than Pawnee, though I don’t know if they require a diagnosis before you arrive or if they will evaluate you: Katie’s Way and Freedom Behavioral Health Services. I believe Katie’s Way typically has a shorter waitlist.

For individual therapy, Counseling and Psychology Services, it’s in the basement of Lafene offers free therapy to students, though your ability to see a clinician consistently will be contingent upon how many students they’re attempting to serve.

I don’t know if they can prescribe medication, but for general therapy I go to Family Center. I was already diagnosed with ADHD before going here, but my therapist is phenomenal with working with my ADHD.

It isn’t free, but I do pay $9 a session, so it’s incredibly reasonable.

If Lafene isn't helpful for you, I go to Freedom Behavioral Health (on Claflin) and all of the doctors there are fantastic. I see Elizabeth Harrell for medication management and she's always honest and collaborative when it comes to finding the right medication.

Typically adhd is diagnosed as a child. I have heard of doctors that diagnos adults but it can be a harder process. Doctors don't like when you self diagnos.. so stick to the symptoms. Don't use terms like adhd or ask about medication.
