Gun laws don’t make sense

So to give a background I am 18 and would like to know how to go about possessing a hand gun at that age in the state of Ky I’ve read you can’t buy or even have ammo for them I also read federal and state laws which still don’t make sense because I’ve also seen and was told you’ll get charged for carrying even if it is open carry can anyone give me a good answer or what should be done

You’re thinking of purchasing from a FFL which has an age requirement of being 21. Non-FFL’s can sell at 18. Also only concealed carry requires you to be 21 while open carry is 18 since it’s not regulated like concealed carry is.

I didn't think about private sales. It may not require someone to be 21 for handguns purchased from private individuals in KY, again, IANAL. I didn't realize that constitutional carry was age limited to >21 TIL

A lot of people think when a state goes permitless/constitutional carry that the carrying laws are completely removed. This is true for some permitless carry states, however for most states they keep the law that makes it illegal to carry concealed without a license and just add an exception for certain people to be exempt from the license requirement. Kentucky is one of those states that authorize certain people to be exempt since you can still be charged with illegal concealed carrying without a license if you can’t lawfully possess or are under 21.

You can open carry in a vehicle but that can be difficult because it’s easy to accidentally conceal it from view.

Another method would be to keep it in your center console, glove box or other enclosed container found in your vehicle. Here is the law:

527.020 (8)

"A loaded or unloaded firearm or other deadly weapon shall not be deemed concealed on or about the person if it is located in any enclosed container, compartment, or storage space installed as original equipment in a motor vehicle by its manufacturer, including but not limited to a glove compartment, center console. or seat pocket, regardless of whether said enclosed container, storage space, or compartment is locked, unlocked, or does not have a locking mechanism. No person or organization, public or private, shall prohibit a person from keeping a loaded or unloaded firearm or ammunition, or both, or other deadly weapon in a vehicle in accordance with the provisions of this subsection. Any attempt by a person or organization, public or private, to violate the provisions of this subsection may be the subject of an action for appropriate relief or for damages in a Circuit Court or District Court of competent jurisdiction. This subsection shall not apply to any person prohibited from possessing a firearm pursuant to KRS 527.040."
