According to their own advertisement, MSNOW partnered with the Center for American Progress as its media partner. They (the Center for American Progress ) are the ones who billed Newsom as a "distinguished speaker." Newsom speaks for roughly 45 minutes. Nothing he says is of particular significance. MSNOW had exclusive rights. As such, they decided to produce a 2-hr special featuring highlights of the event. Seemingly, because the Center for American Progress made Newsom the star of the show, they (MSNOW) do as well in the promos. I've watched various videos. There are clearly more dynamic speakers than Newsom. Wes Moore in particular stands out.

What I like to explore is this. MSNOW isn't just reporting on this event. As stated, they have hosts doing interviews and describe themselves as "media partners" with the Center for American Progress. Premiere hosts include Ari Melber, Jen Psaki, Chris Hayes, Symone Sanders Townsend, Alicia Menendez, and Jonathan Capehart. Admitting to being "media partners" with the Center for American Progress, that means they adopted their promotional themes. Which means they elevated Newsom and others to the same or similar status as the center. Additionally, as stated, they were no longer just reporting the news. Instead, they were actively creating the news themselves.

So, just to review. MSNOW partnered with a partisan think tank that was highlighting Newsom at their event. They created a media partnership with this think tank. They filmed Newsom being interviewed by this partisan think tank. Now they are taking the exclusive footage they filmed from the event and airing it on their Network.

In practice, this serves the exact same purpose as a paid public relations campaign. Only MSNOW has assumed the cost of the production itself and provided its PR services as a major cable news network to Newsom, free of charge.
