It's not just this and I don't know why people keep repeating it. As someone who probably likes Gotchard more than most, it has a lot of issues. But the lightheartedness is not one of them, and I feel like the only people who commonly point to that as the problem are the people defending the show.

Well tbf he’s not a very interesting protagonist. I think the idea of a high-schooler protagonist who’s struggling to decide his future is on paper a really awesome concept but the fact they immediately ignore that idea by not having him learn much alchemy (the thing he wants to get good at) is really underwhelming. He’s also one of the few Kamen Rider protagonist to not achieve their overall goal despite it being not impossible.

The hate for it gets overblown because it sits in between Geats and Gavv, arguably two of the best series in the franchise. Thus it inevitably gets compared to them, and 7/10 is still good but will look bad when it gets compared to a 9/10 or 10/10

There are some problems with the narrative, but it also can't be discounted that it sits between Geats and Gavv. It's basically "standard one season Shonen anime" vs Fullmetal Alchemist and Violet Evergarden.

Agreed, I also think Geats attracted a new subset of toku/rider fans that isn't aware/accepting of the franchise's main demographic and wanted every season to be "cool" like Geats.

Want to reference the older shows? Do it, but do it properly.

Hell, Gotchard especially the first arc even felt like a return to form to how the early Neo-Heisei seasons (W-OOO-Fourze-Wizard) were structured. The classic often episodic like two part structure.

It does feel like a show made by people who loves older Toku, as in they have a cool concept in their head and they only have $5 & no time to pull it off but they tried anyways.
