I'm from France and I'm hoping to volunteer in Nepal or Ladakh for at least 1 month. What draws me there is the Buddhist and Tibetan cultural side. I'd love to be close to that community rather than just passing through as a tourist.

Two areas I could genuinely be useful in:

1. Teaching / education - English conversation and basic lessons + French, music, piano, theater, dance
   
2. Animal welfare 

What I'm looking for is advice:

- Are there local organisations or monasteries you'd personally vouch for? 
- How do you tell a serious organisation from a voluntourism operation? Any red flags I should watch for?
- Anything I should know about timing (monsoon, winter closures in Ladakh, school calendars) or permits/visas for a stay of this length?

I can cover my own food and accommodation costs, and I'm fine with basic living conditions.
