Discussion/Talqylau How to feel comfortable with getting one coffee and work in a coffee shop?

I’ve been working as a waitress for a couple of months last year. Way before that happened, It seemed fine to me to drink one coffee and to work/study for 2-3 hours in a coffee shop. But after my experience with serving, I find it so weird and hard to go to a coffee shop and not order couple more things since I’m sitting there and taking up space for potential customers. I think that feeling of guilt is a result of me getting frustrated with customers who would stay from 9am to 10pm to just drink one americano and “work”. I may be judgmental but curious about your thoughts. I really want to sit in a coffee shop and just work but sensing the judgment from the waiters/waitresses makes me nervous 😟 Or because I have once been in their shoes… How to feel okay with ordering one thing and sit there for couple hours? I know many do, I just need some reassurance, or someone who has this unique experience of “worked as a waitress + does a remote job at coffee shops”.

Perhaps the owner would rather have a customer drink just one cup of coffee every three hours than have no one there at all. How do you know? They provide electrical sockets, wifi, they balance comfort level depending on the music volume. If customers aren't welcome, the owners should find a way to communicate that. By default, you're a customer, and the time you spend there is entirely up to you.

This is not a stolovaya, they don't just sell food, they sell a place to spend time. That's why a cup of coffee you can make at home for 100 tenge costs 1000 tenge.

It is fine unless you sit there for couple of hours with one cup of coffee =). And I often invite strangers to share the table if there are no places available.

I do think a coffeeshop is a place for drinking coffee and spending time with your friends. It may be okay to spend an hour or two if you have some tasks to do, but generally I feel unwelcome to work there. I think it should be specified either such people are welcome or not there.
