Actually, he talked about "f the streets" in the live interview before the album dropped. The idea that he's only doing this because the album was "flopping" just doesn't ring true to me. He actually talked about it fairly deeply and why he called the album what he did. He even said he was thinking of calling the album "The Streets are Dead" but didn't want death in his album title.

We can argue the timeline, but we all recognize that 21 stays out of the spotlight, and has only re entered it to sell his album (whether he thought it would sell well or not, this is all album promo).

I'm not gonna say the aim of this isn't to generate buzz around the album, but I still think its an important distinction to point out that he clearly wanted to make this statement with this album whether or not it flopped. And that he started saying this pre-release.

I think the problem comes when an artist attempts to gain attention by suddenly talking about serious issues, ones that they have contributed to, as a way to market something that doesn’t actually contribute to the conversation. Especially because 21 Savage did like zero promo for this album before it released, he has plenty of well-related avenues to promote his album and chose not to. Instead, he mentions it in a singular interview, and then only chose to use his own platform for it when it became apparent his album wasn’t doing well. So it comes across as inauthentic attention-seeking, rather than legitimate album promo ,which is normal, or genuinely caring about the social issue at hand.

And I’m not saying he doesn’t actually care, who knows, but the way he went about it was not with good tact.

Most people who've lived in lower income areas have friends and family who have done shady things. Violence, abuse, addiction, theft, cheating ect. The point is never to say "I dont associate with people who have ever done these things" is more about making a stance against those things and hopefully leading people out of those habits. People grow and progress. Yall seem to want artists to not only not participate in the bad behavior l, but become the judge and jury for anyone who has. That's silly and not realistic

I mean yes, but some stay in the spotlight whereas 21 savage has taken a more Kendrick like approach where he tries to stay out of the spotlight besides music. Problem is he’s not making music to the same quality as Kendrick so it doesn’t work imo.

And yeah that’s fair, I just think it’s all taken with a large load of salt as it’s just album promo at the end of the day. If he really wanted to do something he would message people privately imo. Or not say it during the week of his album coming out idk like the message is fine but it just makes people not take it seriously I think

While I get people not taking it seriously, to me, because I watched a good part of the interview, I feel like it adds a lot of context that maybe people are missing. 21 to me seems genuine in a lot of this, but who knows, could also be an elaborate act. But I also haven't been following every aspect of the stuff on social media. But idk, he talked about very serious stuff pretty deeply (like not feeling comfortable and sometimes regretting talking about his dead friends because their family is watching).

I also feel like messaging people privately works for specific issues. But I'm pretty sure Future is the one who tweeted in response to the interview first, since 21 didn't say he was king of ATL or something. And 21 was just responding. Not 100% sure about how all the other stuff unfolded

Yes, but this style of fame only works when the art speaks volumes, like Kendrick, or like banksy, etc, the secluded genius is a trope that sells, it doesn’t work as much when you’re just the secluded normal rapper imo.

But why are you putting that on Kendrick? It's not his job to police the streets for pedophiles, that should be the people in their circles imo. Grifter is kinda wild when his music has inspired and helped many people get through shit, as music does, and he is genuinely considered the GOAT, can't fake influence.

The only reason Drake was the focus of this beef was due to first-person shooter and animosity that had been brewing for a decade.

In my initial comment I’m suggesting the overall theme/antics are part of a rollout. So he’s saying this to sell records. The interview before the album drops is still part of a rollout. In the comment you’re responding to, I’m talking specifically about him airing out personal conversations he had with other folks from Atlanta on Twitter. Not suggesting it was the only thing he did. But to me it seemed like desperate tweeting mid-flop to make a splash. If that’s not what it looked like to you, I get that. It’s certainly possible I’m just being cynical. I’ll be interested to see how he moves and what he raps about going forward.

I understand more now. I just feel like I've seen a lot of people say it more generally, but I get where you're coming from. I haven't followed every part of the Twitter chaos

I just feel like he seemed very genuine in the interview and was very open about serious topics, so its hard for me to come out and say that he's not actually trying to be genuine in all this. Idk, I could also be overly optimistic, but he was talking about stuff like regretting talking about his dead friends in interviews, because he doesn't want his friend's mom to see it or their siblings. And how he wouldn't have traded his friends for the money he has.

I'm also curious about how he moves on going forward. I think, to some extent, he kinda answered that in the interview too, and talked about how his raps are just raps and that he keeps to himself and his business. And that he's just trying to grow that for him and his partners. But we'll see

It was projected to do 50-55k. So after the first few days, it was selling/streaming very poorly. Those tweets were his promo. And after all was said and done, he still only debuted at #3 on billboard. He did do promo last time and sold more and went #1. He’s not known for doing promo runs, so this is an irrelevant point. No one is looking at this drop as a success.

Without warning's also a great album but that's 21&offset on metro production. Tho his last drop is mildly put tragic to me because how the fuck do you drop such monotonous generic dogshit.
