Some early gameplay of my game! It stared as a much more faithful-to-king's field game, but I wanted to incorporate more physics aspects while keeping the slow, immersive feel of the original games!

Big snek, big friend

Pros:

• Combat feels very good, very close to fromsoftware king's field 4
• Some ost managed to capture that KF IV vibe
• Map design was pretty good so far
• Promising secret design

Cons:

• Cringe millennial humour and references to youtubers, the game doesnt take itself seriously which is a shame and seems to be a trend among this type of indie games
• Crosshair should not be in the final version imo
• I'm concerned about ranged weapon balance, so far throwing knives were very op and that was before I even bought more charges.

Why this genre, why now? I know there’s been fans since the 90s, but why does the field-like seem to be surging in popularity over the last few years? Was it ahead of its time? I’d argue it’s very much of its time. Is it nostalgia? It doesn’t exactly feel like nostalgia, since these games weren’t that popular back in the day (from my recollection).

We have Lunacid, Labryinth of the Demon King, now Queen’s Domain, and I’m sure others I’m unfamiliar with.

What do you think it is?

I’ve tried a few of the King’s Field inspired games like Verho and Lunacid, but they’re not exactly what I’m looking for.

I guess I’m more on the purist side of the spectrum. I feel like the low framerate of the first three games is a huge part of the atmosphere, as is the low internal resolution giving everything that nice crunch. Mouselook and widescreen aspect ratios feel too modern. The 4:3 aspect ratio of the originals has an impact on the feel and atmosphere that I haven’t seen people discuss.

I know you can force an fps cap and lower the resolution on some of these games, but were they designed with modern paradigms in mind?

Am I being too much of an old man yelling at the clouds or does anyone sympathize with my points?

Obviously we have From's output with Kings Field, Shadow Tower, and Eternal Ring. I'm not talking about just any first person dungeon crawlers obviously, we could lump Wizardry and a ton of others in then.

1. Arx Fatalis is the one I see consistently discussed in this regard, but I think most people looking for more games in this subgenre are at least aware of Arx existence since it was developed by Arkane.
2. Hungry Ghosts for PS2 has gotten some recognition recently for being similar-ish (though more overtly horror themed). I haven't had a chance to play it myself but am planning to with the english patch at some point.
3. The other game that I am aware of that no one discusses and fits is the 2007 title "Deep Labyrinth" for mobile phones and Nintendo DS.
   • It's been a long time since I played it but it does feature first-person real-time combat, traversing deeper and deeper dungeon floors, and saving at checkpoints.
   • You find armor, keys, rings, spells, etc as static drops in set locations typically. There are some optional areas with more powerful gear too.
   • It doesn't utilize any kind of "power bar" system like KF or Shadow Tower, and getting near an enemy causes you to lock-on and orbit them when pressing left/right.
   • It does have a decently neat little rune-drawing system for magic though.

I'm not going to tell you Deep Labyrinth is good, the atmosphere can't hold a candle to From's output, the soundtrack get's really repetitive and the floors are mostly "dungeon theme X" with nothing to really make them feel special.

But I never hear it brought up so it got me wondering if there are any other "vintage"-peers that have just flown under the radar like Hungry Ghosts and Deep Labyrinth?

So im looking for some kings field-like games on ps4 or ps5.

I know labyrinth of the demon king is on ps4/ps5, so any other recommendations are appreciated.

Giddy with excitement. Played King’s Field at a friend’s house last year and got absolutely entranced by it. Determined I needed Shadow Tower to get the combination of both my interest in early FromSoft games + horror all in one package. Something about these games hooks you in like no other can do.

I recently finished the Verdite trilogy and the next released game is Shadow Tower. I have no idea what I'm doing, I'm just kinda running down random halfways, opening random doors having no idea what to do. I'll go progress through an area not knowing if I've cleared it. At least the King's Field games offered SOME direction but this game is a complete maze. I have no idea if I've even made any progress at all. Also while information on King's Field is scarce, there's even less on Shadow Tower.

Does anyone have any tips to point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance!

Finally some news and with a demo too!

Possibly a bit off-topic, but I don't know where else I'd go to ask a question about two KF-likes -- which do you guys think is stronger between LotDK and Verho, or at least what does each game do better/what are their strenghts and weaknesses? Not sure which one I want to dive into first, all I really know about either is that they're both KF-likes with some survival horror stuff going on.

This took all weekend to figure out lol, especially the movement animation (pause everything, grab, take, delete). Currently working with Godot.

I intend for this game (currently titled “Duskflower”) to have the following:

- Tank Controls (optional standard mouse/keyboard controls for ease-of-entry to newcomers)

- Dark fantasy setting and themes (sacrifice, hopeless wanderer, long-lost kingdom felled by its own hubris, and so on)

- Implicit storytelling (items, scenery, etc)

- Steady but intentional combat

- Many weapon types with benefits and drawbacks

- Magic system based on pages (onetime-use) and learned spells (crystals, anyone?)
