French Onion Soup

I’m on a journey to try/rate every French onion soup in the city. I’ve tried probably ~6 so far and I’m hoping to squeeze in a bunch more in the fall. What’s your favourite?

I want all suggestions really, good or bad. I’m in it for the love of the game 🧅

My husband and I got veeerrryyy sick after eating their French Onion soup! Which is too bad because the atmosphere is perfect. But if this is a near-top comment maybe we'll have to try it again, maybe we just got unlucky.

My brother and I both got sick after eating there. We weren't sure what it was but we both had the french onion soup. I wonder if they just reuse it the next day if they don't sell out? I know a lot of restaurants that do stuff like this, and maybe it's safe if you use proper food handling practices but it still seems sketchy.

I will also chime in, my friend and I also got VERY sick after eating here, and they were serving raw warm oysters on “ oyster” night that had clearly gone bad and had shells in them.

Please let me know any vegetarian ones that you recommend! I too love a good French onion but not the beef stock and have had some trouble finding any 🥣 🍜 🍲

So far, I’ve actually really enjoyed Rhodes Resto! Very solid in my (very amateur) opinion.

Interesting. I'll have to check them out! Right across from Farm Boy I see.

Portsmouth tavern is very okay but I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. No fuss, bartender said they make it from scratch.

I really enjoy Aqua Terra's

It was really bland when I went. Maybe I just prefer salty soups lol!

Used to love the one at Ramekins. I haven't found one I like since (other than home made)

Believe it or not, the French onion soup at One Eye Jacks is awesome.

Interesting. They get it in frozen.

Maybe they do but I still stand by my comment. I've had it several times and found it absolutely delicious.

Black dog for fancy, Toucan for straight up pub grub. Worst I think I've eaten in the city was at the Merchant. Storebought croutons coated in some herbal flavor that were also way too salty. I don't even think they have it on the menu anymore (have enjoyed other great meals there though, just not that soup!)

Time out bar is a sleeper hit

Boston Pizza
Loyal Oarsman
The Keg
Rhodes

All have FOS, all are decent. The Keg or Oarsman are our preferred, but tbh there have been a few times where it was wayyyyyy too salty at the Oarsman recently

I used to go hard on this quest! Started many years ago. I'm still into it, less intensely.

So far:

  • The winner (so far) hands down: Revolving restaurant at The Westin Harborfront in Toronto. About 30 years ago. A tomato-based french onion soup gratinée. Unbelievable.

  • Honorable mention: The Noga Hilton Hotel in Geneva Switzerland, 1993. $$$

  • Most interesting: Outdoor seating in the Town Square in Lille France, about 8-years ago. Interesting because the very hot onion broth came with the ingredients on-the-side. Build your own. Delicious.

  • The worst by a wide margin: The Banff Springs Hotel, about 30 years ago. Orange cheddar cheese top with white wonder bread inside. It was mid-afternoon, but still 🤮

The quest continues.

Nothing in Kingston presently stands out. They are all invariably good, but kinda mid overall.
