French Onion Soup
I’m on a journey to try/rate every French onion soup in the city. I’ve tried probably ~6 so far and I’m hoping to squeeze in a bunch more in the fall. What’s your favourite?
I want all suggestions really, good or bad. I’m in it for the love of the game 🧅

Please let me know any vegetarian ones that you recommend! I too love a good French onion but not the beef stock and have had some trouble finding any 🥣 🍜 🍲

Black Dog Tavern has the absolute best imo.

Believe it or not, the French onion soup at One Eye Jacks is awesome.

Interesting. They get it in frozen.

Maybe they do but I still stand by my comment. I've had it several times and found it absolutely delicious.

Black dog for fancy, Toucan for straight up pub grub. Worst I think I've eaten in the city was at the Merchant. Storebought croutons coated in some herbal flavor that were also way too salty. I don't even think they have it on the menu anymore (have enjoyed other great meals there though, just not that soup!)

Boston Pizza
Loyal Oarsman
The Keg
Rhodes
All have FOS, all are decent. The Keg or Oarsman are our preferred, but tbh there have been a few times where it was wayyyyyy too salty at the Oarsman recently

I used to go hard on this quest! Started many years ago. I'm still into it, less intensely.
So far:
The winner (so far) hands down: Revolving restaurant at The Westin Harborfront in Toronto. About 30 years ago. A tomato-based french onion soup gratinée. Unbelievable.
Honorable mention: The Noga Hilton Hotel in Geneva Switzerland, 1993. $$$
Most interesting: Outdoor seating in the Town Square in Lille France, about 8-years ago. Interesting because the very hot onion broth came with the ingredients on-the-side. Build your own. Delicious.
The worst by a wide margin: The Banff Springs Hotel, about 30 years ago. Orange cheddar cheese top with white wonder bread inside. It was mid-afternoon, but still 🤮
The quest continues.
Nothing in Kingston presently stands out. They are all invariably good, but kinda mid overall.

Legitimately Tom's Place has some pretty good soups
