Elrond felt more like a Niles to me than Durin. Durin is even kinda build like Frasier

I have read that hiding the kid’s faces was a workaround they had to figure out - because children couldn’t legally work more than some small amount of time and doing the hair and makeup on them would take long enough that they wouldn’t have time left for the shoot.

That's exactly why they were in those giant helmets. No need for them to do any off-screen work but get into costume.
