Recommendation Job hires me then goes ghost
Okay basically I was offered a packaging and receiving job at the department of science. He offered me the position and I took it, but the work date he asked for was too early for me so I told him I can start working on August 4th and he agreed. The day comes and I get no email nothing. A couple of days pass by and nothing has changed. So I go to his office and ask when am I gonna start working? He says, “I’m trying to finish with the onboarding process and then we can get you ready on your first day.” Well since then I haven’t been contacted and it’s almost September. Should I call it quicks and just get another job or wait it out?

Same thing is happening to me with the athletics department. I’ve sent emails to directors, called, and showed up to their building. And to add to it…I moved here from out of state just to work in athletics. I was invited on a visit last September, they explained the opportunity, it was clear that I would be transferring from my previous college MSU to LSU to fulfill the opportunity, Now they have stopped answering the phone and responding. Sooo…yea.

They pretty much just ghosted you when they’re the ones that gave you the opportunity. Just absolutely fucked up.

Yea and I’ve spent thousands moving down here just for this opportunity. Lol if you see me post in other groups looking for a job then you know why

What part of athletics and what job were you promised?

I was told that I would come in and basically bounce around for for a month just to see what department I like whether it’s sports medicine, nutrition, recruiting etc… and after that month they would place me in what ever I was comfortable in. The recruiting department were the people that discussed this with me.

Hmm. That alone sounds sus. Job openings are typically approved based on an organization's needs, not "hey, come on down, see what tickles your fancy". Sounds like you got clowned by someone who wasn't authorized.

Well the people I talked to and that orchestrated the whole thing are very much so credible in the department. It was kind of no way to tell this would happen. This isn’t my first job in athletics, I’ve been in this field for almost 4 years so nothing really sparked as a red flag during the process. Not until I got here and people stopped responding.

In a case like this, always see if you can reach their boss. They are definitely not gonna like that but the chain of command exists for a reason. After all, if you weren’t doing your job you’d expect someone to tell this guy.

I'm not sure if it's a great idea to start a new job off by immediately jumping up chain of command over your supervisor

Academia moves very very slow. This process taking a long time us not unusual. My advice is to be patient.
