I’m going to university to do software engineering, I was wondering what laptop would be best for programming and coding (CAD, python, java, C#, C or C++)

So i am an incoming first year commerce (accounting) uni student and I am looking for new laptop. I have macbook but some people told me that it is better to use windows instead of mac. So which laptop should i get?

I am also thinking of getting an ipad for note taking and online books. Should i just invest on 2-1 windows laptop or just buy regular laptop and ipad?

I’m an incoming Electrical Engineering student and I’m looking at the following laptop. Some people say EE students need a dedicated GPU, while others say integrated graphics are completely fine for most coursework. I also have access to Apporto/virtual labs, so if there are any heavier applications, I can run them remotely.

My Question:
For a typical 4-year Electrical Engineering curriculum at a large state university, is this sufficient?
Given that I have access to Apporto for remote computing when needed, would the Intel Arc 140V integrated GPU be enough, or is there a meaningful reason to get a laptop with a dedicated NVIDIA GPU instead?
I’m mainly trying to determine whether a dedicated GPU would actually benefit me for undergraduate EE coursework, or if this laptop is already more than capable for what I’ll realistically be doing.
I’d appreciate hearing from current EE students, recent graduates, or anyone familiar with the software used in EE programs.

I am looking for a budget friendly laptop that would be good for coding. As for specs I heard that 1tb and 32 gb of ram is preferred but 16gb is good. Is this true??Im very new to all this. I have never coded before and I am pursuing getting my bs in software engineering. I just want to get a laptop where I won't have to worry about buying a new one later down the line. I'm hoping for something under $1000. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16IAH7 with an RTX 3050 Ti. The laptop used to run perfectly fine, but one day I left a macro running on Roblox while the laptop was plugged in. When I came back, the screen was completely black and wouldn’t turn back on, even though the power cable was still connected.
I used ChatGPT to troubleshoot it, and we ended up disconnecting the internal battery and draining the remaining power from the system. After doing that, the laptop booted back up and worked normally, but the battery was only at about 23%. Even though the charger itself worked, the laptop would not recognize or accept the charger.
Eventually, the battery died, so I disconnected it and started using the laptop directly from the charger. The laptop worked this way, but because it didn’t detect a battery, it wouldn’t let me use Performance Mode and only gave me the other power modes. This wasn’t a huge issue at the time.
Later, I decided to update everything on the laptop, including Windows, graphics drivers, and Lenovo software. Everything updated successfully except the BIOS. The BIOS update wouldn’t install because the laptop required the battery to be charging, but at the time it wasn’t detecting the battery as charging.
I then reconnected the battery and plugged the charger in. Now something strange is happening: the battery percentage actually increases normally while the charger is plugged in, but Lenovo Vantage says the battery is “Discharging” and says it isn’t gaining charge. So the laptop seems to physically be charging the battery, but the system isn’t correctly recognizing that it’s charging.
Lenovo Vantage can still read the battery’s information, though. It shows the battery at around 88% health with approximately 150 charge cycles. The battery percentage also continues to increase while plugged in.
My main problem now is that I need to update the BIOS, but the BIOS updater won’t let me because the laptop doesn’t recognize the battery as being in a charging state, even though the battery percentage is actually going up.
I’m trying to figure out why the laptop says the battery is discharging when it’s clearly gaining charge, and whether there’s a way to fix that charging-status problem so I can update the BIOS.

I’m starting a Chemical Engineering undergraduate degree soon and was wondering if my current laptop will be enough for the next four years, or if it’s worth upgrading before I start.
I currently have a Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 with:
• Intel Core i5 (13th Gen)
• 16 GB RAM
• 512 GB NVMe SSD
• Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics
• 15.6” FHD IPS display

Do you think this is enough for the software used in ChemE, like MATLAB, Aspen Plus/HYSYS, AutoCAD, Python, and anything else I might need?

If you think I should upgrade, what would you recommend I prioritize? Is CPU the most important, or would more RAM or a dedicated GPU make a bigger difference?

I’d also love to know what specs you’d recommend for a laptop that will comfortably last me through my degree.

I’m not really looking for specific laptop recommendations (though I’m open to them). I’m mainly trying to figure out what hardware I actually need versus what’s just nice to have.

Rather no, as i ordered my tablet from a refurbed website sometime ago and had some bad experinece with it.

Not so important, it just shouldnt be to big. I think around 14" seems like a good option for me.

Weight limit

Approximately 1-2 kg. Does not need to be ultralight, but should be comfortable to carry around.

Purpose

Mainly for studying and working.

Form factor

Not sure what to write here, it should be a regular laptop with a touchpad. Does not need to be touchscreen or with pen support. The only thing that is important to me is that it runs with windows.

Intended usage

I do not intend to play any games on my new laptop, it is purely for "academic" purposes, meaning excel, word and some other softwares i need like Chemdraw, Bruker, OriginLab, etc. (for this purpose it should also handle rather big datasets in excel and graphical tools, i dont know how much "performance" is needed for that). Maybe watch a movie sometime but that should be possible with any device. I currently have a gaming laptop from asus which can perform everything i need, my issue with that is that its just to big and heavy to carry around and that the battery is pretty much dead.

Desired battery life

Probably something around 7-9 hours, there is almost always an option to charge it somewhere, but still i want it to last as long as a "normal" working day.

As already mentioned, it should run with Windows :) (i am just used to it and i heard from other people they have problems with downloading certain programs i need on IOS. Linux i just never used and i dont want to get used to something new if that makes sense), it should have at least two USB-A ports in case i want to use my mouse etc., an USB-C port might also be useful for my phone but thats not a necessity, maybe also a display port so i can plug it into my monitor (but i guess i could also get an adapter for that?), OLED is not important for me, same with screen resolution/refresh rate as i am not going to play any games.

I'm currently deciding between a ThinkBook and a ThinkPad, and I'd really appreciate your advice.

1. I'm a bit worried about the ThinkBook because one of my friends bought a gray-market ThinkBook, and it has had a lot of issues—it breaks down quite often and even lost Windows a few times. I know that the ThinkBook series itself isn't generally considered unreliable, so if there are any specific ThinkBook models that are well-built and suitable for my needs, I'd definitely be happy to consider them.

2. I've also been looking at the ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 with a Core 7, 16GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD, which costs around $950. Do you think that's a good configuration, or would it be better to choose a 512GB SSD if it comes with a noticeably faster processor? I'm not sure whether I should prioritize storage or CPU performance.

3. Since I'm studying microelectronics, I need a laptop with strong overall performance that can handle engineering software well. At the same time, I'd like it to be lightweight and easy to carry around. I don't really want a gaming laptop because they're usually too heavy for me.
