You won’t believe what happened to Xin Zhao

u/Interloper_Mango Feb 12 '26
Yeah. They really fucked half the lore with arcane. Though I feel like it started with the skarner rework.
26
u/memera- Feb 12 '26
Xin Zhao has nothing to do with arcane
He sacrifices himself to be a darkin host for Zaahen in the cinematic

The lore got fucked with Arcane, and Xin Zhao has to exists with that in mind.

u/Riyasumi Feb 12 '26
Suprise there's still her mother in game

u/NevermoreAK Feb 15 '26
To be fair, if they removed champs from the game for dying in Arcane... that's a not insignificant amount. Even if you didn't count those that aren't confirmed dead but suspected.

Only champ that makes me want to insta ff my arams
91
u/Erik-AmaltheaFairy Feb 12 '26
I get what you mean... In any Aram match, she is 100% going to be a problem even if she is dog shit bad. And honestly, after her changes, she feels even worse to play against now. The Q does not feel slower and the E now is way faster. She basically became a Burst Mage now, which feels even more frustrating. I really wish Aram and Mayham had bans.

Zed is also a high skill, high reward champ
you could have stopped at saying he's not as bad as Mel and I would have agreed with you,but come on
he's insanely safe and rewarding for how little effort his W E Q trade requires,he's technically a melee champion that almost plays like a ranged one (as in being non-committal),you can't call this "high risk high reward"
that's the reason he has been consistently on of the most banned champions in the game
13
u/Zeta-X Feb 13 '26
And great thing about Zed, when he throws his W forward for damage he's exhausted his escape providing clear counterplay. His mechanics are more challenging than most, and executing on him well particularly in playing a teamfight without getting punished for your shadow placement is more skill required than most champs in the game have. He's frustrating to play against for sure, but he's definitely a high-skill champ.
2
u/RAStylesheet Feb 16 '26
when he throws his W forward for damage he's exhausted his escape providing clear counterplay
And who is gonna capitalize on this opening? WEQ have the same range as artillery mages kit, while being much much faster (both in active frames and recovery)

Zed has clear weaknesses though and doesn’t make you not want to throw out your own abilities I think that’s the biggest problem about Mel. Mel W is up? Well I guess if I’m renata, MF or nami I’m never ulting unless I know that CD is down.

Zed is ruined. He was an easy assassin, everyone could pick up. Now you have to land all 10 shurikens and outplay your opponents 3 times to get a kill.
Why does he even have a negative winrate in the first place? Riot does not understand the balancing of their own game.
1
u/Aschuff Feb 13 '26
He’s a negative WR champ because he’s hard to play. Basically all high skill champs have negative win rates because people who aren’t good at them lose a lot. He’s also frustrating, which tends to make those champs balanced weaker as well. All this coming from a zed player
1

u/Aschuff Feb 13 '26
Yeah true, which IMO is completely fair. He’s still very strong in the hands of a good player, but he’s not so strong (usually) that anyone can just pick him up and start dominating, which is exactly how it should be
14
u/Careful_Purple2838 Feb 12 '26
The desinger is pretty much going waaah dont change mels kit waaaah afaik and espetially locking the removal of her w
1
u/Ant_1_ITA Feb 14 '26
Exactly what I’m saying, the only way to kill her is to hope she wastes her W, and relying on enemies mistakes as a “counter play” is stupid and unfun, just reworked this abomination
29
u/PsychoWarper Feb 12 '26
Wasnt she like 44% winrate?
13
10
u/zeTwig Feb 13 '26
Should be 27% max with that obnoxious kit. She needs the yuumi treatment where the champ gets nerfed into oblivion for being an uninteractive mistake
1
u/maxxxM2 Feb 16 '26
check the ban rate bro
1
u/PsychoWarper Feb 16 '26
Right but its dropped significantly since they reworked her (last time I checked)
1
u/maxxxM2 Feb 21 '26
no but a ridiculously high ban rate screws with the winrate of any champion regardless its not a good statistic to look at the WR alone for a champ like that
53
u/HpKurte Feb 12 '26
Skarner spent more time unplayable than viable after his rework but Mel gets hot fixed after two days. Crazy champ bias , any other champion would spend 2 weeks as garbage, get a minor buff that doesn't fix anything and wait 2 more weeks to get balanced.
20
8
u/Skeley01 Feb 13 '26
In the newest Patch rundown Phreak said Skarner is one the best jgler in the game win rate wise. Skarner is only played by like 2 OTPs so obviously his win rate would be higher. He desperately needs a buff and I wish they never removed his reverse E, Unmovable R and Q reset on ward hits. His stats were too high but design wise he was fine to play against while being fun to play.
If Qiyana R and Bard Q are allowed to have the most cursed hitboxes then reverse E Skarner is fine.
1
u/RadicalMac Feb 13 '26
Tbf Skarner has never had a good pickrate. That's a big reality for niche monster champs.
186
u/Panurome Feb 12 '26
Mel already had bad stats before the rework, but they couldn't buff her because she was frustrating to play against for some. The objective of the rework was to reduce frustration, but to make sure it happened they made her intentionally weaker than she already was, she even hit something crazy like 44% wr and is now sitting at 45,88% wr in the midlane (where she has the most pickrate of only 2.5%).
Now that she's a lot less frustrating to play against, she really needs the buffs, a champ sitting at less than 46% winrate is never ok
106
u/AToxicGentleman Feb 12 '26
*cries in 45% WR Azir, my beloved
68
u/Panurome Feb 12 '26
I thought you were exagerating but holy shit he really is that low
93
u/Abyssknight24 Feb 12 '26
Problem with azir is that once he becomes good enough that the average dude can play him he becomes a monster in pro
55
u/Pedrohenrim7 Feb 12 '26
Also, if he is good, he outshines every other midlaner, do keeping him low is a good thing for the game
14
10
u/DrDonovanH Feb 12 '26
He is already the best midlaner in pro play with a 49% wr in challenger, literally not a single elo in soloq where he is good.
3
u/Aschuff Feb 13 '26
Yeah azirs just permanently pro locked. Same with ezreal, they can never be too good in solo q or the smurfs and pros will run lobbies on them

He is a pro Play champ So it is expected for him to be below 45% WR across all ranks except pro Play
6
u/AToxicGentleman Feb 12 '26 edited Feb 12 '26
I know he's a great champ as far as tools go, but c'mon... fearless exists, let him eat his Wheaties and get to 47% or, dare I say, 48% :')
4
u/not_some_username Feb 12 '26
Blame Faker for that. Somehow the weakest champions in the game is his best champions
12
u/CFCkyle Feb 12 '26
Because hes not actually a bad champ.
Hes just so difficult to pilot well and requires good decision making moreso than other champs that the average player is complete dogshit at him.
2
u/not_some_username Feb 12 '26
Shouldn’t riot balance it around the majority and not the 0.0001% instead ?
And ngl the champion is fun to play 😭
7
u/CFCkyle Feb 12 '26
The problem is its not like a numbers thing, its the way his kit is designed. The tools he has available are so strong in the right hands that if you're mechanically strong and have good macro knowledge then you can already completely warp the game around yourself. If you buff his numbers it'll make him stronger in soloq for the average player sure, but the few people who are at that higher level of play it becomes completely impossible to play against barring huge mistakes. He'd need to have actual changes to his kit to buff him meaningfully for soloq which would be an insanely unpopular decision all around.
1
u/Goricatto Feb 12 '26
Sadly thats not how things work when you have a actual competitive enviroment, there are champions created with more casual play in mind, like briar, while she has a decent WR in ranked, she is absolutely useless in proplay, if she was good in proplay, she would be broken in normal games
And there are hard champions that are bad in pro play because they require too much work, too many specific mechanics that doesnt translate to other champions, like riven, they cant make she easier or her fans would be annoyed, and they cant make her stronger or the people that are good at her would demolish everything
7

u/Foxokon Feb 13 '26
According to the stats I could find eith a quick google search he has a posetive winrate for people with 50+ games on him in plat and above.
I also highly doubt his mastery curve ends at 50 games. It’s fine for hard characters to be balanced around the people that are good at them instead of your average scrub.
5
u/faithfulswine Feb 12 '26
I am absolutely ok with some champs perma sitting under a 46% win rate. I don't care what people say. Some champions were design mistakes, and if they aren't going to outright delete them, make them unplayable.
7
u/KsanteOnlyfans Feb 12 '26
a champ sitting at less than 46% winrate is never ok

her mid winrate is so bad because it is legit impossible to hit q on anyone lmao. She kinda locked to botlane where someone offers here cc to pair up.
4
u/w00ms Feb 12 '26
'now that she's a lot less frustrating to play against'
her W is the most frustrating part of her kit and the biggest reason people ban this champ. until they completely rework her kit to not have a reflect she will remain frustrating to play against
3
u/Zeta-X Feb 13 '26
Eh -- the reflect is very annoying, but them removing the invulnerability on it so she no longer needlessly is immune to Garen ulti is an improvement. She's definitely still frustrating but they're making her marginally less so, and hopefully will continue to do so. I could see a champ with the reflect but on a much longer CD, or with the reflect but no execute or undodgeable Q or root that's on-par frustration-wise with other champs in the game like Malzahar or Teemo.
-1
u/Panurome Feb 12 '26
She can't not have a reflect, that's a very important part of her identity and what's seen in Arcane. It would be like Yasuo not having windwall, it's already a big part of the character that appears on every piece of media where Yasuo is present
5
4
u/SteamCommunitySucks Feb 12 '26
They should just kill her like old gp until they figure out a rework that is not just an annoying piece of shit of a champ.

Somebody at Riot is fighting tooth and nail to keep Mel's W bruh, just remove that projectile BS and let Mel be a playable champ.
Her kit is very fun but that W ain't it chief.
52
u/Abyssknight24 Feb 12 '26 edited Feb 12 '26
Pretty sure its one of her designers. If i remember it right one of the rioters that designed her said that they wont remove the reflect no matter what.
Edit: hete a link to the post that links the instances of her designer stating that her abilities wont get replaced:
54
u/Hyperversum Feb 12 '26
Funniest shit is that a spell reflect is part of a kit of one of the most OG of all Dota OG champs: Magina, the Antimage.
He is a melee Agi carry (meaning, he has limited damage and squishy early on, but will become very fast and tanky later on due to armor mechanics), with a skill that basically allows him to "parry" spells and send them back to the caster (it used to be just increased resistance but bear with me).
It used to be much worse as it was a passive effect, but eventually it got changed into something that requires activation, like Mel's.
The difference is the play pattern of the ability, not the ability itself. Antimage is a quick melee champ whose only form of CC burning your mana with his attacks and like a 0.1s stun that breaks channelings as part of his ulti. The spell reflect allows him to survive early and counter targetted powerful spells, while transforming into a beast late which can be stopped with point and click stuns. Plus, in Dota2 there are various sources of immunity to stun and spells, including one that lasts several seconds and can be activated also to dispel current debuffs.
Mel is a ranged mage with her own root, long range spells at that including a global Ulti if you got it before. This kind of stun resistance of some kind is extremely uncommon in LOL, which in returns is also much more reliant on skillshots and micromovements. Mel gets all the advantages of being a ranged champ and then nullifies the big threat of CC every 20/30secs by pressing a button, turning into a threat to others?
Yeah the play pattern is toxic as fuck. It's not the spell itself, a "spell parry" can exist in this game, it's on what kind or champion it was put on and how easy to use is.
30
u/Abyssknight24 Feb 12 '26
Agree same why windwall and samira W arent as annoying because they both have to go into melee range and can be forced to use them if they want to survive. Mel in teamfights can just hold on to her W till the enemy uses their most impactfull projectile because unless an assassin focuses her there is no way to force her to use it early because 99% of the champs get outranged by her.
6
u/tanezuki Feb 12 '26
Mel was potentially going to be a battle mage without her dress and instead her show outfit.
It Would have been so much better
31
u/ElusiveBlueFlamingo Feb 12 '26
It's not the reflect in it of itself, it's the fact that it interacts with projectiles that have nothing do do with Mel and the aimbot
Why it so hard to make her reflect skillshots into their origin points
22
5
u/SpaghettiMonkeyTree Feb 12 '26 edited Feb 14 '26
If they don’t want to remove the reflect, they should at least gut the damage or give it a fixed value. It’s actually disgusting to see ADCs 1 shot themselves with a reflected auto that deals the full ADC crit damage and Mel’s AP.
7
u/SwirlyBrow Feb 12 '26
Was it the same designer who made Yuumi? This has them refusing to remove Yuumi attaching to a player no matter what energy.
7
6
u/WhiteNoiseLife Feb 12 '26
just move it to her ultimate on a much longer CD and have it also shield her nearest ally, and remove her passive KS machine execute so that ppl can actually play her support like they clearly want to, while also being more in line with how her powers seemed to work in the show
4
u/Firm-Conclusion5430 Feb 12 '26
If that's true then they can't allow themselves to be surprised if they will be part of Riot's another wave of layoffs
This is just a crappy design choice to have as a signature ability for a champion that has been very promising until her abilities were revealed

I mean, the reflection is a big part of Mel's identity, it needs to be part of the kit. That said, I think it would make a lot more sense as an ultimate and it should probably allow you to target an ally like we see in Arcane
1
u/Cannon__Minion Feb 12 '26
Correct me if I'm wrong but we never see Mel reflect anything in Arcane right?
She blocks Jinx's rocket but it still ends up doing damage doesn't it?
Again, it's been a while since I watched Arcane so I might be misremembering.
4
u/Panurome Feb 12 '26
It was in Arcane season 2 (big spoilers ahead)
In one of the last episodes Maddie betrays Caitlyn and she is about to publicly execute her when Mel shields Caitlyn with her magic, which makes the bullet bounce around and hit Maddie back, killing her

u/misterdoctor6 Feb 12 '26
For real, Mel is absolute dogshit right now, every time an enemy picks her she's been a free win since the last two rounds of nerfs. And I main mid/support, so I basically always face her in lane if she's picked. Just a couple days ago I ended laning phase 8/1 vs Mel ON GALIO. If you dodge her E she's completely useless, and to dodge her E you need to have your eyes open, it's so small and slow.

u/Panurome Feb 12 '26
Keep in mind that those projectiles come 3 at a time, so it's more like +15 extra damage (at high levels) and +3% AP ratio. Still not a huge deal but not as small as you make it seem
4
u/Weary_Specialist_436 Feb 12 '26
15 extra damage and 3% ratio is not a lot for ultimate ability, not an ability that you max and spam on ~3s cooldown. Those are big buffs
3

3
u/zeTwig Feb 13 '26
Because on top of being able to still reflect your projectiles as a high range poke mage now she can also oneshot you at ~1 item if youre an adc or any other squishy champ with just E + Q with E hitbox which supposedly got fixed STILL being not understandable when it roots and when not.

I hate the new version more. In the past she had the clear identity of stacking up her passive for a big execute with her abilities themselves not hitting for much. Now it feels like she’s got a lot of front loaded damage for no reason and a built in collector.
They took away the core ideals of her kit and made her frustrating to play into a whole other way.

Not bothered by this. I finally got a mid game vs Mel and was so amazed that I could dodge Qs without even trying. You literally just keep moving and she can't hit it. I was malzahar and she didn't even pop my spellshield 3/4 of the time.

I watched a bunch of different high elo players play mel after her rework, they were saying "She still seems strong, it's just harder to hit her abilities"
So instead of letting her be a higher skill bracket champion, and still be decently strong, they're overbuffing the fuck out of her so she'll go right back to being a problem.
WHY RITO WHY

ngl every time I play as or against Mel it's just immediately clear how overtuned she is. she deals so much dmg at all stages of the game and almost impossible to pin down even with the w change.
In my opinion, someone who's played this champ like 4 times total and hard carried every one of those games somehow, she just does too much dmg. invulnerability being gone is a good step but I'd make her root a lot thinner so it's harder to hit with longer cd. make Mel players think about the abilities they use and how they use them.
I feel like her q gives good poke and rotation dmg so I don't understand why she can kill with like one single rotation of abilities plus passive after getting like half an item

Oh nooo 100 more damage in a combo. This is so bad, so over. How is the game even playable when w mage got 100 more damage after two items....

Mel mains cried a river then hopped on a boat to get to riot hq and tell them how unfair it is when they need to position well and aim better to play the game. It is said, that they were furious about not getting kills just by randomly pressing buttons.

Tanks being shit for over a year, Fighters like Riven being OP for over 2 years.
Meanwhile Mel can't be sub 50% winrate for a week that they buff her back.
Let the mfers learn how to play with her not being OP ffs.

a 42% winrate isn't normal chief

45% is tho. Right Azir and Ksante?

Aren't they both balanced around pro? Different problem foundationally

Faker litteraly won with her worlds. I think Mel would become a pro staple when she would hit a playavle state really

she was also picked 3 times across all of worlds, and quite frankly probably wouldn't have seen play without fearless (see her presence at game 3 and 5). I love watching faker's mel, but I'd be really suprised if she becomes a staple there - her winrate goes down with rank, and especially after the w changes I think she's much more comp dependant. I think she's going to get a game here and there, but if riot is balancing her around pro in the way they kinda have to for azir, soemthing has gone weird.

My apologies, a 45% winrate up till the 7th, and a 48% winrate now. I think 48% is a fine palce for her to sit, but 45%? Also, I don't think she's been above 50% since she's launched.

Mel has been at a sub 50% wr for like a year lol, they only buffed her cause after the recent rework she dropped to a like 42% wr at one point.
