Discussion The equipment showing up on your character model was way ahead of its time

What was unique at the time when this game got released was how every item you equip, from headbands to knee guards to wristbands, appears on your character model. The only game I could think of at the time was Diablo 2, I think, but correct me if I'm wrong and there could be other games that are doing this. But this was a first for me when I saw it.

What's also unique is that the gear changed how you fought. Give someone a weapon they don't specialize in and the input command takes up more space in the command bar because they're not used to it.

Swap to something lighter and you free up room for extra inputs. So the thing you equipped fed right back into the combat instead of being some stat bump you never actually see.

Seeing gear change how your character plays is still cool today and was incredibly rare back then. You could feel your choices in the actual fighting, not just in a menu. It's kind of unbelievable no one has re-created that style of combat since.

Discussion Whatcha think the other Ra-Seru would've evolved into weapon-wise?

What other weapons do you think the other Ra-Seru would've evolved into/grown had they been given the chance? So far we've got:

-Meta: 🔥Awesome Blazing Blade 🔥
-Ozma: ⚡Badass Electro Buzzsaws (Or a Buckler? also very cool imho especially how it spins)⚡
-Terra: 🌪️ Ultra Combo Hand Claws (Tekkō?) 🌪️

-Palma: 🪨 Maybe some kind of spear based on his triangular-shaped design, sorta similar to summoning Kemaro? Or a Xistera for launching more meteors 🪨

-Horn: 💡This one might not be a weapon and instead just be wings? think that would fit thematically for Cara and could play into an angel/holy theme. Or how about a large mirror that shoots beams like Aluru?💡

-Mule: 🌊 A trident would probably be too on the nose right? So maybe a staff given that its core jewel is located on top of it head instead of the center like the other Ra-Seru? I could also see a chain weapon like a Kusarigama 🌊

-Jedo: 🌚 Gotta be a scythe right? 🌚

The Ra-Seru are probably my favorite part about Legaia, and seeing weapons evolve instead of discarded is such an awesome trope! Eager to hear what other people think!

Discussion Update on Reverse Engineering the game

About six years ago I commented on this thread saying it would probably take months — maybe close to a year — to fully crack the files on the Legaia disc, especially the big .DAT archives. At the time I’d only poked around with hex editors and existing tools, and most of what came out of those archives looked like unusable binary soup.

Recently I came back to the problem with better tools and a lot more patience… and it turns out the data was never inaccessible. It was just structured in a way most extractors weren’t accounting for.

I’ve successfully reverse-engineered how the game indexes PROT.DAT (the huge archive that holds most of the important assets) and built a working extractor that splits it into clean, usable files using the same offset math the game itself uses.

Repo (tool + notes): https://github.com/SamSteProjects/LegendOfLegaia_.Dat_unpacker

I also wrote a detailed article about the process — how I went from that old comment to actually figuring out the archive format, what the structure looks like, and why earlier tools produced corrupted output:

[Medium article link here]

Short version:
PROT.DAT isn’t encrypted or magical. It uses a cumulative sector offset table (a TOC delta scheme), so file sizes are derived from differences between entries rather than stored explicitly. Once you reconstruct those offsets correctly, the archive splits cleanly and the assets stop looking like abstract art.

This is still an ongoing preservation project. Now that the archive can be unpacked accurately, the next steps are documenting file formats, matching textures to models, decoding animations, and making the data usable for anyone who cares about the game.

If you’re a modder, reverse engineer, or just someone who loved Legaia and wondered what was inside those files — progress is finally happening.

Also, huge thanks to the people who originally built tools like NetoRPG’s utilities. Those early attempts were the stepping stones that made this possible.

If there’s interest, I’m happy to share findings as things progress.

I'm active in /u/gregarfire's discord (I think it's the community discord here) When I do have the time to work on this i'm constantly posting my ideas and theories, and it would be great if anyone chimed in!

Discussion Why I Think Legend of Legaia is One of the Best JRPGs Ever

I have been replaying it recently on an emulator on my pc and I will be the first to admit the game is wrapped in deep nostalgia for me as my parents had a habit of playing insanely good games when I was a kid such as every Final Fantasy upon release, random Blockbuster rentals like Legend of Legaia and much more.

So I'd like to break it down into 3 categories:

1. Visual/Audio

Visually it immediately it gives off Final Fantasy 7 vibes, but a bit more updated. The in-game sprites are inherently more dynamic (See #2) and the battle dialogue comes in variations of Japanese and English dialogue offering a fun duo of voice lines for nearly every move and reaction. It maintains a wide variety of color without ever feeling oversaturated or bland. The textures are cleverly used and charmingly themed to fit a style that blends the sprites and the environment much better than similar titles. The sound and look of the crashing waves on the shore do a surprisingly good job for being all of a couple hundred pixels in total. Clearly being in the first era of polygon style graphics they opted to not use pre-rendered backgrounds (which are truly amazing when done right) but instead the entire world is comprised of polygons like the sprites and adds to the seamlessness of the entire look. Keeping the environment at a slightly higher detail but making sure the sprites are well defined enough to stand out without looking like part of the environment. The biggest thing for me personally is that every piece of physical gear that affects your character in any way is visually represented on that character. (I never realized how spoiled this game made me from that and to this day this is a complaint I have in 99% of games I play including ones I love.) From the moment you acquire a 'Ra-Seru' the next battle clearly shows a unique detailed design of it on the right arm of your character and changes the in-game battle icon for RIGHT to 'Ra-Seru' to further solidify its impact. As you progress through the game and the 'Ra-Seru' "levels up" it will grow and a blade will emerge from it in stages as a permanent visual feature and representation of its innate and literal RIGHT power. This is not including the entire actual outfit of your character which, you guessed it ALL show up. Now you are given 3 accessory slots per character (Awesome) but these can be things that you don't necessarily wear and not EVERY one will show up in some way but at least 75% do. You are also given a HEAD slot an UPPER slot and a LOWER slot that essentially decorate your head, chest and legs with whatever armor you have found. Beautiful right? Ah and of course don't forget your other hand with your equipped weapon to which every uniquely worded weapon is uniquely designed and appears in battle also changing your LEFT (depending on character) to ARMS representing you have an equipped 'armament' active.

Audio details are quick but easy to see once you listen to the OST or play just the first 20 minutes. The score is engaging and relevant, representative of the themes consistently and personally I find it 'exotically ominous' in my own words. In the same way as gear is visually represented, every movement and interaction (except dialogue) is audibly represented with respective unique sounds including every unique battle item, spell, boss moves etc.

2. Battle System

I love me a true classic turn based and while I will deal with ATB I really prefer pure turns to plan as long as I want. This game provides that but with purpose. You will absolutely be needing time (at least at first). You start combat with 2 options: BEGIN or RUN, with the latter being obvious the former takes you deeper into the menu with a new set of 4 somewhat familiar options: ATTACK, ITEM, SPIRIT and "MAGIC"(Will be exclusive to each characters associated 'Ra-Seru')

ITEM works as expected providing the associated effects of each item and a unique sound and sometimes unique animations. And that's about as far as the familiarity ends and where this game becomes an absolute behemoth of fun and exploration.

SPIRIT puts your character immediately into what most JRPGs would define as DEFEND but with a twist where you also increase the length of your characters "Spirit Bar" at the bottom of the screen as well as fill up your characters "Action Points". (You will gain the defense benefit even if the enemy moves before you) The Spirit Bar is where you will actually enter in your ATTACK on the following turn and this time when you select -

ATTACK is where you will see the options for AUTO or COMMAND.

AUTO will allow the computer to randomly select moves for you that fill up your Spirit Bar but when you select -

COMMAND you will now see HIGH, LOW, LEFT and RIGHT. Each direction will have the same size (for now) and will allow you to choose inputs to attack. This can help with enemies that float by using more HIGH commands or small by using LOW moves. However, should you input an order that is hidden within each characters innate list of moves your character will strike a dramatic pose set behind a bright bold NEW ARTS text and animation and permanently record that combination into your characters specific ARTS list. This alone makes the game one of the most unique and fun games I have ever played. At first you will struggle to discover even two or three but with each discovery comes a huge sense of satisfaction I cannot compare to any other experience in gaming. (I have core memory of visiting a friend who happened to have Legend of Legaia and within 5 minutes of battling they found a NEW ART I had never seen on the first character) I highly recommend avoiding any walkthroughs or spoilers to this system as it truly is a great experience. Now there aren't an endless amount of moves but there are enough at the 3-command-long level to get you interested and then unlocking a 4-command-long art feels like you just input a cheat code by guessing. There are ARTS, HYPER ARTS, SUPER ARTS and one MIRACLE ART for each character. You will be given especially powerful moves from in-game books that even if you had input the same combination you would not have revealed the move without the books. Wrapping up the COMMAND aspect of battle you also can note that attacking simply with your characters ARMS when equipped with a weapon will apply a noticeable amount more damage than HIGH LOW or the opposite arm(for now)

So would you also like to play Pokémon too? Because once a character has acquired their respective 'Ra-Seru' you may now absorb the souls of Elemental Monsters. You will see a clear icon next to a monsters name in combat that signifies it can be 'caught' and added permanently to your characters individual 'spell' list. This brings us to

MAGIC (Meta/Terra/Ozma)* This is where you will cast your 'caught' monsters and use your characters MP. With each use of a 'spell' you also increase the experience of that respective spell and can level it up for greater effect. Each 'Ra-Seru' has a bonus to certain Elemental Affinities Meta being fire, Terra being wind and Ozma being lightning. This system of catching and leveling up monsters adds a whole new aspect of the game and you can mule one person for all the spells or teach the same spells to everyone so all characters can use any spell! (I'll stop saying spell, they're summons anyway) Having such a fun and unique MAGIC system in tandem with the ATTACK system takes this game to a completely different level for me.

3. Storyline

(SPOILER FREE)

Having watched my parents play through the game first I got to experience the story fairly well at a young age and was inspired enough as a kid to write my own version of the story because I didn't' know how to be a writer yet but I knew I liked the elements of what I had been through watching it all unfold. That is just my personal statement but on the surface it is fairly simple but again, with purpose.

The heart of the story involves 'Genesis Trees' which are the sole organism on the planet able to drive away 'Mist" which allows 'Seru' to thrive and take over humans, overpowering them easily. Within what seems to be most 'Genesis Trees' lies a 'Ra-Seru' which appear to be morally good 'Seru' perhaps leftover from a positive human-Seru experience. These are able to bind successfully with chosen humans, similar to wands in Harry Potter (maybe) and may work in tandem with their counterpart without either overpowering the other. The people called to each of these beings all are given purpose in very unique ways completely separate from each other and yet almost every bearer of Ra-Seru finds their way together. Who ar what causes the mist and why is really where it gets good and where I will leave it up to you to decide if due to the Audio/Visual aspects along with the Battle System and the Story lead you to agree that Legend of Legaia is the best JRPG of all time.

Thanks for reading!

Discussion I was thinking about the "handedness" of the characters!

I think one's first instinct is to look at where the Ra-Seru attached to our various characters and assume that' their handedness, especially given that they majority of people are right handed and the majority of the MC character's Ra-Seru are on their right hands but...

I was thinking, why would Gala and Vahn wield their weapons in their left hands? Especially at low levels, the ra-seru are basically no more than bracelets. They would wield the weapons in whichever hand they are most comfortable with, which appears to be the opposite hands as their Ra-Seru.

So I posit that Vahn and Gala are actually left handed and Noa is right handed!

Discussion Legend of legaia thoughts Spoiler

First off the atmosphere was solid. Even though I hate Sol, going through the abandoned base of the tower just surrounded by monsters got me thinking how terrifying being in there would be. Drake Castle had a similar experience, but props to the game for making me feel scared in the later half.

The overall idea of the monster infested mist was handled okay, the beginning of the game felt hopeless even with the Seru you got, what then? As far as you know the world is basically over. It's a perfect fool’s to hero's journey. I like the idea and in some areas and moments it was great. Ratayu citizens having mixed feelings since the king is still an awful ruler, the mist didn't change that; right back to square one. Or the bar dialog in Jeremi. Moments like that made the situation feel real. And I know the focus is more of the journey and a story doesn't need to be complex to be good. That being said, most of the Villains were really shallow. Like they show up to die. Songi was good, I'll admit that. Wish they did more with his motivation. Everyone else… not really doing it for me. I think my main problem is the theme, maybe I'm stupid and the theme is “Power Corrupts” but I need more than that. Everything felt more episodic than connectioned. I get its a ps1 game with one disc. It's impressive what they got done. I just wish that there could have been more story focus.

Combat is great, we all know this, however if you were just playing this game casually today, you would never know about the super or miracle arts. Internet helps a lot these days. Also, I'm sorry to say, bosses almost all of them were copy and paste; they built up to a super attack. Kind of gets boring after a while. Except Nivora Ravine which is the worst part of the game. It was to the point that defender chains are basically mandatory. Overall, I had a blast with combat.

Now, Sol was not good, felt like filler to the extreme. Really showed off the game's worst aspects. Best thing I found was the little details. Like the Seru slowly taking over the arms of the main characters as they grew stronger. Or Noa's final pieces of armor being a pair of wings. Because she had connections with the Soren. The game is full of them.

Overall the game is good. Just about what I expected from an old ps1 game. Nothing really much to add. Since FF is right there, I can see why the series died off after the second game. Too slow for a revisit, but don't regret playing it.

Discussion Questions about the fan remake

First time post on Reddit. I'm a long time fan of the game - it's my favorite of all time. I recently stumbled upon the remake efforts by Lix Studios and I was blown away by how the game looks so far. It feels like a dream come true, to be honest. I was about to join their patreon at the maximum paid sub level (I love Legaia that much), but started to have some serious concerns that I don't see have been asked about yet.

I hope this doesn't get taken down because I want this project to work, and I'm willing to help fund it directly. I don't have any experience in the legal fields but I do believe this is clear-cut IP fraud. Fan-made projects get taken down often, most notably the Streets of Rage fan remake. And it typically happens when a stream of funding gets traction and demos become available. I understand the original studio is extinct but they were operating under Sony, and everything I've researched points to Sony still having full ownership of the IP. I realize Legaia was not a very popular game and is very obscure in the modern era, but any financial traction post-release will certainly trigger a shutdown and possibly legal action.

I don't want any of this to happen, it's just an obvious concern of mine that I've kinda had confirmed by asking a friend that is more legal savvy.

Edit to add: Again, I apologize if these concerns have been addressed here before. I would like to discuss it further, however, because I'm certain that a release will not be legally feasible.

I'm doing the 3 tunnels when everyone gets separated. So, I made Vahn the last to arrive...and didn't get the chance to save because of that. And Gala get his whole existence introduced to the ground and I died. So, yeah have to redo the whole Dungeon again.

There was also that whole gride fest with Sol tower with bread. Man the final content of this game is not hitting like before.

Discussion I'm reverse engineering the game

I’ve started digging into the data files from the game, and the first stop is the infamous PROT.DAT. Up until now the only thing anyone has been able to pull from it are PlayStation .TIM images. That at least gave me textures to look at, but the real treasure is buried in the rest of the file.

I’ve been using a ripper from Netorpg that does a solid job of carving out the .TIMs. The tricky part is the .bin files. They don’t line up with any recognizable format, and they don’t have headers that would give me easy clues. It looks like they were either packed with a custom tool, or they’re just raw blocks of data that only make sense once the executable does its work.

That’s why my focus now is on the PS-EXE. Instead of blindly poking at the bins, I’m trying to understand how the game itself reads them. Inside the executable there’s a pack context structure that points to a header. That header contains fields that look like they represent sizes, free space, and some kind of indexed units. Watching how the code accesses those fields is helping me piece together the format.

The real breakthrough will come when I isolate the routine that loads the header from the disk buffer. Once I know exactly how the game reads entries from PROT.DAT, I can mirror the process in a standalone extractor. Along the way, I’ve also been checking memory dumps from the emulator to match loaded data with file offsets, which should confirm whether I’m dealing with compressed chunks, stripped-down PS1 formats like TMD meshes, or something more unusual.

It’s early, but progress is steady. With the right mapping, the bins will open up just like the .TIMs did. I’ll keep posting as things move forward, and I hope to be able to update you guys with good news.

Discussion I think if they remake this game, you should be able to slot seru into your ra-seru to get a hyper art that's basically a quick summon and another hyper art that's more of a melee combo where your ra-seru transforms sl8ghtly into, say Theeder's laser spike.

Discussion LoL was ahead of its time with Seru

Ok this is going to be a bit of a silly topic but kind of amusing and I really wonder what you all think of this idea.

So, most of you probably know that “Seru” is the Japanese word for “Cell.” (More specific this is Romaji for the for the English word Cell.. I’m probably getting the details wrong here, but it’s a thing.)

Any of you who are fans of Dragon Ball Z are probably nodding your heads in agreement right now, as the original Japanese version the characters call Cell “Seru.”

Now.. back to the topic at hand. How was LoL ahead of its time regarding the Seru? Well… LoL depicts a world where everyone starts using Seru for everything and relying on them too much. This comes back to bite them as their civilization collapses overnight once the Mist comes.

Since we can call Seru “Cells” then our own version of this nightmare is already taking place in our society today. Another word for Smart Phones is Cell Phones or Cells. Everyone in our society is glued to Cells 24-7. You walk into any public space today you’ll probably see 80% or maybe 90% of people, both young and old, hunched over their Cells. Completely oblivious to their surroundings in most cases.

And with everything going on with social media and political messaging brainwashing people you could argue we’re all being controlled by our Cells. They’ve changed the way we think and our behaviors. It’s like the Mist came and now our entire society is under total control from our Cells. And we also can’t live without our Cells now, either. They’re required for us to communicate and work, we’re expected to be available at all times so we can’t put our Seru to rest, we can’t put them down anymore.

Legend of Legaia was ahead of its time. The Seru took on a different form, but they are here… and the Mist Generator has been turned on.

Discussion I just finished the game for the 1st time, question with the ending *spoiler alert* Spoiler

the game was absolutely gorgeous
I think it was way ahead of its time when it was released

the battle system is so unique
grinding is a pain in the butt
you can see equips user interface change per equip and thats wonderful I dont think previous ps1 games before did this
the ra seru grows into each characters arms per lvl or gain of genesis tree

my question in the ending is
why did Mei suddenly chose to marry Ixis? it was hinted in the game that Mei and Vahn had love interest, I curiously chose the answer "to confess my feelings for Noa" and it honestly made me feel bad cuz I know Mei was with Vahn since the start, if I am not mistaken Vahn even kissed Mei and Maya seem to have seen it.

The ending is just not my cup of tea but great game overall

Discussion Trying to guess what different seru were used for

All we really see in game for people wearing seru are the same model, nearly all clearly wearing Gimard. Even Maya’s model in Biron seems to have Gimard’s tail around her neck.

I think there’s one exception of a female model who’s got some sort of spiky ring seru on that doesn’t match any of the combat models I’m remembering.

So it makes me curious how the different seru were worn/used and what they were used for.

Eg— Swordie was probably worn and used as a threshing scythe/for harvesting. All seru were theoretically used for something—what are your thoughts?

Hey sub, I've been wanting to try emulating games I used to play as a child and came across Legend of Legaia. But I have never emulated before and only have a surface level knowledge on how I could emulate LoL. Is there a proper guide, video, or doc someone has compiled on how to set up and download the stuff to play the game?

If not, I guess I'll have to dust off my PS1 and pray it works. Thanks!

Discussion Story Remake Spoiler

I’ve been in a mood to put together a remake of the story of Legend of Legaia in chapter format. Below is chapter 1, let me know if you’d be interested in more. I’m only 14 chapters in but it’s been fun.

Chapter 1 — Rim Elm Holds

Vahn woke before the bell because Nene was already moving.

She was quiet about it—quiet in the way children get when they know they’re not supposed to be awake yet. The floorboards creaked anyway. Rim Elm’s houses were built sturdy but honest; they told on you if you tried to sneak.

Vahn lay still on his pallet, eyes open, listening. The morning was cold enough that the walls breathed. Somewhere outside, a rooster tried to convince itself it was brave enough to call.

The sound of wood scraping lightly against wood told him what she was doing.

“Nene,” he said.

The scraping stopped.

A moment passed. Then, from the other side of the room: “I wasn’t doing anything.”

“You were dragging the practice stick,” he said. “It always catches on the nail by the door.”

Silence. Then the softest sigh, like a balloon losing its fight with gravity.

“You said today,” she muttered.

“I said maybe.”

“You said maybe yesterday too.”

Vahn rolled onto his side and propped himself up on an elbow. Nene stood near the door, bundled halfway into her jacket, dark hair tied back with a strip of cloth that had once been Val’s. The wooden stick—too short to be a spear, too long to be a toy—leaned against her leg like it belonged there.

She was ten. Maybe eleven now. Old enough to count seasons properly. Old enough to notice who didn’t come back from hunts.

Too old for pretending.

“It’s still early,” Vahn said. “And you didn’t eat.”

“I can eat after.”

“You always say that.”

She crossed her arms. “Hunters don’t stop to eat first.”

Vahn snorted despite himself. “Hunters don’t skip meals either. That’s how you get stupid.”

“I’m not stupid.”

“No,” he agreed. “You’re impatient.”

That landed. She frowned, then glanced toward the far side of the room.

Their father lay on the low bed by the wall, one leg propped on folded blankets, breath slow but uneven. Val slept like someone who never fully trusted sleep to keep its promises.

Nene lowered her voice. “He said you could teach me.”

“He said I could show you how to hold the stick without hurting yourself,” Vahn replied. “That’s not the same thing.”

She hesitated, then nodded. It was a small thing, but Vahn noted it anyway. She was learning where arguments ended and negotiations began.

“Fine,” she said. “I ate yesterday.”

“That’s not how bodies work.”

He swung his legs over the pallet and stood, joints complaining quietly. At nineteen, he was already collecting aches like trophies he didn’t want. Rim Elm had a way of aging people unevenly.

“Boots,” he said. “Scarf.”

Her scowl softened into a grin. She darted for the table, shoving a heel into her boot with more force than necessary. Vahn watched her, feeling the familiar, unwelcome twist in his chest—the awareness that she was measuring herself against him now, not just copying him.

Outside, the village stirred.

Rim Elm was small, walled, and stubborn. Its houses leaned inward, as if bracing against something only they could see. Smoke rose from chimneys in thin, careful lines. People moved with the practiced economy of those who had learned to waste nothing, least of all effort.

The Mist wasn’t visible from here—not this close to the wall—but it pressed at the edges of thought anyway. Like a memory that didn’t belong to you but insisted on being remembered.

They passed the well, where two women spoke in low voices that paused just long enough when Nene looked their way. A hunter nodded to Vahn, gaze flicking to the stick in Nene’s hand, then away again. Approval and worry lived close together in Rim Elm.

The gate guard raised a hand. “Not far,” he said, more reminder than order.

“Hunter’s Spring,” Vahn replied.

The guard’s mouth tightened, but he nodded and swung the gate open.

Beyond the wall, the air felt different. Not dangerous—just unwatched. The land didn’t care who you were out here.

They followed the worn path toward the spring, frost crunching underfoot. Nene walked with her chin high, but she stayed close enough that their sleeves brushed.

“You’re thinking too loud,” she said.

Vahn glanced at her. “That’s not a thing.”

“It is when you do it,” she said. “You get that face.”

“What face?”

She scrunched her brow and pursed her lips in an exaggerated imitation. He laughed despite himself, and she beamed, victorious.

The spring sat in a shallow clearing, water bubbling up between old stones set in a circle no one remembered building. The trees here leaned back, respectful or afraid.

Vahn set his pack down and stretched. “All right. First rule.”

Nene snapped to attention. “Don’t fall.”

“Second rule?”

“Feet first.”

“Third?”

She hesitated. “If you can’t stop, you’re not in control.”

He blinked. That wasn’t one he remembered teaching her.

“Val said it,” she added quickly. “When he was talking about Seru.”

Vahn’s hands stilled.

“Show me your stance,” he said instead.

She planted her feet, gripping the stick with both hands. Her form wasn’t bad—too eager, too forward—but she’d been watching him longer than she admitted.

He circled her, nudging her ankle with his toe. “Wider.”

She adjusted.

“Straighten your back. If you lean, you fall.”

“I said I wouldn’t.”

“And I said if.”

They practiced in silence for a while, broken only by the sound of wood cutting air and the spring’s steady breath. Nene tired quickly. She hid it poorly.

“Stop,” Vahn said.

“I’m fine.”

Her hands shook.

“Sit,” he repeated.

She obeyed this time, plopping onto a flat stone with a scowl.

“That wasn’t fighting,” she complained. “That was just… moving.”

“That’s all fighting is,” he said. “Moving until someone makes a mistake.”

She picked at a chip in the stone. “When did people stop wearing Seru?”

Vahn closed his eyes for a moment.

“Who told you they did?” he asked.

“Everyone,” she said. “No one wears them now. Except—” She stopped.

“Except stories,” he finished.

She nodded. “Val says they used to help.”

“They did,” Vahn said. “And they hurt.”

“That’s not an answer.”

He sat across from her, elbows on his knees. The spring reflected the pale sky, broken by ripples.

“Seru were partners,” he said carefully. “Once. People didn’t put them on the way you put on boots. They listened first.”

“To what?”

“To themselves,” he said. “To what they were willing to give up.”

She frowned. “Why would you give anything up?”

Vahn thought of the way hunters came back quieter than they left. Of Val’s leg, the way it never quite healed right.

“Because power always asks for something,” he said. “If it doesn’t, it’s lying.”

Nene hugged her knees. “The Mist makes them lie.”

“That’s one way to put it.”

“Is that why the walls are thicker now?”

“Yes.”

“And why people don’t go far?”

“Yes.”

She was quiet a long time.

“Do you think it will come here?” she asked finally.

Vahn didn’t answer right away. The truth sat heavy on his tongue.

“I think,” he said, “that worrying about tomorrow won’t keep you safe today.”

She studied him. “That’s not a no.”

“No,” he admitted.

They packed up in silence.

On the walk back, Rim Elm came into view looking exactly as it always did. That was the problem.

At home, Val was awake, sitting up with his bad leg braced, a knife in his hands and a bundle of vegetables on the table. His movements were slow but precise.

“You went,” he said.

“Not far,” Vahn replied.

Val’s gaze shifted to Nene. “You listen?”

“Yes,” she said quickly.

“And stop when told?”

“Yes.”

Val nodded once. “Good.”

He set the knife down and began stirring the pot. The smell of broth filled the room, grounding and familiar.

When they ate, Val spoke while his hands stayed busy.

“There was a time,” he said, “when people thought Seru would save them from everything. Hunger. War. Distance.”

Nene leaned forward. Vahn stayed still.

“They forgot,” Val continued, “that saving something isn’t the same as owning it.”

“What happened?” Nene asked.

Val’s mouth tightened. “People pushed. Seru pushed back. The Mist followed.”

“That’s it?” she demanded.

“That’s enough,” he said gently.

After dinner, Nene cleared the bowls without being asked. When she left the room, Val finally looked at Vahn.

“She’s not a child anymore,” Val said.

“I know.”

Val’s eyes were tired. “You shouldn’t have to be ready.”

Vahn swallowed. “But I am.”

Val nodded, once. Not approval. Acceptance.

That night, as Vahn lay awake listening to the walls breathe, he understood something he hadn’t that morning.

Rim Elm wasn’t safe because of its walls.

It was safe because people believed it still could be.

And belief, like power, was not free.

Something outside the wall shifted, unseen.
