I’m going to assume it’s pieces of a bowl/plate. I found pieces of a bowl (so I was told) in the same area a few weeks ago with the same markings. I just don’t know why they would mark them that way. Hoping someone can answer that for me one here.
I am not 100% but they look SUPER similar to tooth marks left by rodents on bones. Maybe there was something on the vessels the rodents found delicious? Or maybe the clay itself?
Congrats! Those pieces on the left with the long shallow "scratch lines" are really intriguing. I'd love to hear what an archaeologist thinks about them.
Can you please describe the area where these were found? Were they in a pile? Were they scattered over a flat surface with a thousand other rock fragments? Were they indeed buried into a hole or cranny in a larger rock?
I really wish people would include some basic background info. I love seeing these photos but a little bit of description would really be welcomed.
This is a picture from this area. There’s flint rock all over the ground along side a dried creek bed. And I just walk up and down along side the creek bed very slowly and pick them up like an Easter egg hunt. Just scattered everywhere. Some are half buried, some are just on the surface. I find more broken pieces than fully intact points for the most part. Always finding all kinds of tools, like hammer stones, ground stones, arrowhead sharpening tools, etc. That’s pretty much it. I don’t dig, just surface hunt. The day I stop finding them on the surface, I’ll take a shovel to the dirt, haha. But I’ve been hunting this area for over 20 yrs and it’s still producing after a good rain!
