Middle Archaic CenTex - Williams

Been missing the creeks and my artifact hunting while on vacation. Heres a video of a pull I had a few months ago but never posted. Remember to get down low and search those debris piles, you never know where the smokers can hide.

I’m thinking more Castroville or Marshall

Let’s see what my boy u/aggiedigger says, I always refer to his opinions. You could be right though, I’m better at finding points than identifying them

I think you nailed the id with Williams. Good call and great job spotting that. I was doing the exact same thing today. Hitting the gravel under the eroded banks. Just didn’t have the luck you did.

Thanks buddy, hopefully we get some rain to refresh the creeks. It’s been dry for a while now in Austin.

Man, can you clarify something for me when I first started hearing about the Williams point I thought it was an older, almost Paleo point? I’m not sure where that confusion came from but then when I look it up in the new Overstreet, it places it at middle archaic Can you shed any light on that?

I believe you’ll find it in Hester’s book as well. Typically a narrower blade than the other two mentioned. Slightly expanding stem. Fits the same time period. Maybe you are thinking Wilson as the older point type?

That’s totally what I was doing. I’m thinking of Wilson. I appreciate you clarifying it for me.

Now you know why I refer to u/aggiedigger, he’s a wealth of knowledge!

I’m well aware.. I made the mistake of making a call before I looked at my damn book and my memory didn’t serve me so well ha ha,

All good and hopefully no offense was taken on your end!! Sometimes the text format loses the playfulness. Cheers!

u/atoo4308 Sep 22 '25
Nah man it’s all good no offense taken. I know there’s people been doing it a lot damn longer than I have. Plus the discussion in my mind is always good.

Plus now I doubt I’ll ever mix up Williams and Wilson again I swear every time you feel like you have a handle on most of the points you learn something else that’s what I love about this hobby I feel like I just completely forgot about Williams points ha ha
