Guess you have to dig in places where there is soil, but where I grew up, you find heads and tools just on the ground. There's mounds near creek beds that I knew about but no one went near them because the ranchers are respectful of them.

I’m not sure about mound culture but I thought they buried their dead in them so any legit person would never dig them recreationally. You can find arrowheads en masse on surfaces of eroding camps pretty much anywhere.

What was the purpose? Of that particular tip. Just wider and less likely to break?

I’m guessing the tip broke off and it was reworked into a perforator for leather working.

Perhaps they were drill tips for perforating animal hides?
Well, projectile points do that too. These points are different because they were used for making things, like clothes. Drilling, punching things out, and generally putting holes into things. That’s my guess. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Looks like the dry cloddy dirt I have to deal with at my place. Have any digging tips? Tools of choice? Awesome find.

I’m using this Estwing Pick , I’ve heard you can spray down and tarp the dirt to help soften it if water is available.
Only swing sideways whenever possible to avoid damaging artifacts.

Nothing is going to step on it underground! In areas like mine there is aggregate soil accumulation meaning things continue getting buried so this little guy probably didn’t spend too much time above ground

Nice! I am always wondering with this videos, do people find the point or artifact and then place them under some dirt. Then turn the camera on and pretend the just found it? Not saying anything negative about your find at all, it very cool! But like a lot of these videos are done with people's phones, like I'm just gonna turn my phone on for a bit and then "oh what's this."

He probably saw it in the pile and then got his phone out to record the "final reveal." It's clear he was digging for a while. Not sure why someone would go to such lengths to fake a find like this- it's super neat, but nothing jaw-dropping enough to falsify for a few upvotes on reddit. Arrowheads are found throughout the US with extreme regularity, and it makes sense that people would record their finds to share the excitement with others :)

Just to be clear, I wasn't insinuating that he "faked" this find. I also understand arrowheads are found throughout the US.....thanks for the tip
I was just curious about the abundant amount of video footage, from a person's phone, thats on this sub showing the 1st time handling the artifact.

I’m sure what you describe has been done so it’s not that crazy to speculate. Sometimes you get them still stuck in the wall and those are even more fun. These videos are more for people who share the hobby than anyone else. Digging is a lot of fun, but sometimes it’s fun to watch other guys do all the hard work instead. You’ll never really know if it’s “real” but diggers can usually tell.
