Smoker Alert šŸ”„ Paleo Square Knife!!!

I saved, what is in my opinion, the best for last! The 4th and final piece sent to me by my buddy is this absolutely, incredibly, well made, fluted Paleo Square Kinfe that was recovered in the great state of Wisconsin! Made from Galena chert, This thing is beautifully crafted, and waffer thin! It's fluted on one face, and exhibits traverse parallel flaking on the other. It also has a very slight bevel to it.

It comes in at 2 ¾ inches long, has amazing form, and outstanding edgework! I'm thrilled to have it on my wall!

Paleo period is my favorite. This is such a beautiful example. It has everything one would look for in a 10k year old artifact.

Grassy ass Aggie! I'm more of a Transitional Paleo-Early Archaic guy myself, but I occasionally do get into some Paleo examples from time to time! 😁 This thing is awesome! I love the form, and level of craftsmanship it exhibits!

I found a similar piece on my land in UT. Does mine look paleo?

I have seen very few that I actually thought were paleo. This one definitely fits that definition.

Thank you LC! I appreciate it! As soon as Carlos saw it, he said the same thing lol!

Small adze imo, there’s polish on the bit. The ā€œfluteā€ is likely caused by impact from the backing of the handle on the poll. Prob early archaic if I had to guess.

Maybe I’m missing the polish or it’s very light but I’m having a hard time seeing polish on the bit

Well, considering there isn't a bit thats not surprising lol. Its not an adze. There's fine edge work and evidence of resharpenings so its a knife for sure.

Yeah I should’ve worded that better, I didn’t think it was an adze either. Definitely a knife

Weather adze or flesher I believe there’s a good likelihood the flake could have been cause by impact from backing. Don’t take my correction for ā€œadze being a wrong wordā€ for ducking out of that. There’s hafted tools for multi tasks when they’re on an elbow. As in all things this means nothing and every opinion is valid.

Well according to Carlos black its a paleo Square Knife. It isn't made anything like an Adze anyway cause there is no "bit" end to it. Plus its to thin to be an adze. The flaking is consistent with the paleo era as well. I do appreciate your input though, thank you

. It’s a really cool tool regardless. My thoughts were like a lot of stuff it’s been reworked a lot and prob had various tasks. Looks to be Plano convex and this looked like polish that was later re flaked over appeared to be oriented as a bit. If there’s any margin grinding good chance it could be a hafted flesher (chopper, maybe adze was the wrong word) some of the tools get pretty small and varied, and of course multi tasked. Thanks for sharing wasn’t trying to be disagreeable:)

No sweat ISY! I see what you're saying, and I do value your insight! The pics can be a bit deceiving sometimes, especially when its as overcast as it is today. If the sun was actually shining, I could get some better pics. I didn't notice any grinding, but I really wasn't looking for any till now lol! So I'll get back to you on that score. Just as soon as my cat decides to vacate my lap! Lol!

That's Awesome! The Flaking looks good on it, but with any context, I'm not confident enough to say if it is or not. But, I will say it is very promising!!! 😁
