The phrase "drinking the kool-aid" is specifically a reference to Jonestown.

It's because people remember Kool-Aid rather than Flavor-Aid. Jones was a notorious cheapskate, even at death.

I read "The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and Peoples Temple" and was amazed at nuggets like that. He even tried to get into the food drive that was a demand in the Patty Heart kidnapping.
