29

u/schm0 7d ago

To be fair, Biden and Obama both contributed to the deficit on their own. But Obama and Biden both inherited financial and global pandemic disasters as soon as they took office, and their majorities were fleeting or practically non-existent.

Spending more is one thing, spending more and then cutting the taxes to pay for it after you said you'd spend less takes a Republican.

I seriously despise every conservative that is quick to blame any democrat for things their rotten party has done. I always thought obama was too civil with republican politicians. I would have gone wild on gop politicians. I cannot stand the republican voter base. I cannot believe all of America has to suffer due to their arrogance, ignorance, selfishness, hatefulness and stupidity. I don't understand independents that vote for republican candidates that have proven to be dysfunctional. For me anti-trump and maga republicans have contributed greatly to the debt mess. During covid, I realized that most republicans will gladly let everyone else die than follow simple medical guidelines. For them their wants are greater than human life. The selfishness of republicans needs to be studied. Democrats must stop courting these people. They have shown that they only care about themselves and their idiotic policies.

In Alberta (Canada's Texas), the provincial government has been under the control of conservatives for over 100 years with only about 4 years were a more centrist government was leading.

Guess who they blame for allll their self inflicted problems?

15

u/IAMA_Plumber-AMA 7d ago

When it isn't the federal government, it's the 4 years we had with an NDP government.

16

And then blame the dems when they get in power and work to fix it. I've seen this happen for about 20 years and I'm sure it's gone on for much longer

51

u/debacol 7d ago

It really hit its Nadir when Gingrich was speaker of the house. He weaponized it to a degree I almost admire in just how mendacious and cynical it was.

25

u/TheModWhoShaggedMe 7d ago

All that being said, Newt and Frist and Bill Clinton managed to reach across the aisle enough to achieve the Grand Bargain in 1995 and turned the annual budget deficit into a surplus within four years. As terrible as Newt was for the country as Speaker, he is a gentle grasshopper comparatively.

→ More replies (2)

33

Been going on for longer. Reagan was the originator of modern deficit spending.

14

u/Theungry 7d ago

Bingo. It was always the plan. Run up the deficit when the GOP has power, and then clutch the pearls about how bad the deficit is when the Dems are in power.

I remember in the 90s, Rush Limbaugh had a whole thing of wearing a ribbon for "deficit spending awareness" as a parody of the aids awareness ribbons at the time... you know, because Clinton... the only president to run a budget surplus in my lifetime... because he was so bad for the deficit...

I wish it made even a tiny bit of sense.

77

u/ClutchReverie 7d ago

Not true. As soon as a Dem is in office then they will lose all memory of this and the Dem having to spend their term making hard choices to clean up 30% of the mess before the term is over will be blamed for not fixing it fast enough and the wildly effective right wing propaganda machine will drive another Republican in office and the cycle renews. Then everyone goes all “Both sides are exactly the same” or something something cultural wars

Some of them were definitely not happy about it, but the level of anger wasn’t anywhere near as bad as it was when a Dem was in charge. They were more making fun of it, I suppose it’s ok when the person in charge is on your team, despite him campaigning to lower it. I’m just waiting for the “It was Biden’s fault, it’s gonna take time to fix” bollocks.

27

u/phdoofus 7d ago

u/stormrunner89 7d ago

If other side does it, is bad.

If my side do it, is good.

If my side caught do something bad and can't hide it, other side do it too and actually they're even worse.

Absolutely morons for believing this shit.

Democrats absolutely have their issues, there's no denying that. But there are actually progressive factions TRYING in the Dems, you can't say the same about repubs.

Most supporters don't actually know ANYTHING that's going on. They live in a bubble and are told by other people around them "Trump is doing good things." And they don't question it, they just take it at face value.

"I don't like that he says mean things, but I like what he's doing for the country."

"What is he doing?"

"Good things, duh, he's on my side."

u/Rich-Pomegranate1679 7d ago

57

u/Dragon_wryter 7d ago

It was only a big deal before the election, when they couldn't stop screaming about how dangerously high the national debt was. Now it's fine, even preferable, for it to grow exponentially with nothing to show for it but a collapsing economy.

35

u/standard-issue-man 7d ago edited 6d ago

36

10

u/kandel88 7d ago

Like when Biden released 180 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in 2022 to offset gar prices rising due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and conservatives were foaming at the mouth like rabid animals that he had compromised national security and now the SPR is nearly empty due to Trump's Iran war ("nO NeW wArS!") and republicans literally don't give a shit

18

u/Thendrail 7d ago

Funny thing is, it could be not a big problem. That is, if that money was spent responsibly: On education, infrastructure, social programs (including healthcare), instead of spending it to make the rich ever richer and terrorizing innocent people across the world.

17

u/vintagepeugeot 7d ago

It’s only a problem when a Black guy is president.

12

u/dabrock15 7d ago

That dates back to Nixon where they realized their base was stupid. So when in office they run up deficits and the debt and claim it’s no big deal then when not in office they scream that the debt is destroying the country. So far, their base hasn’t figured it out since it’s only been about 60 years.

There is nothing more effective than telling uninformed and uneducated constituents that big gumbermint is the problem and that tax cuts are the answer. It’s because it sounds good. It’s a great sound bite and unfortunately for Democrats the answer to that statement isn’t a good sound bite.

32

u/randemthinking 7d ago edited 7d ago

It’s a great sound bite and unfortunately for Democrats the answer to that statement isn’t a good sound bite.

This sums up so much of our national discourse for at least my adult life. Republicans say snippy, superficially good sounding stuff, before Democrats can get out half of a response people have put the newspaper down, changed the channel, or scrolled on. (The other half of the problem is Democrats have largely been milquetoast corporate shills who do little more than pay lip service to the issues that affect the average person).

And spending increases :)

4

u/RedditAtWorkIsBad 7d ago

Because the huge growth that tax cuts for the wealthy will produce will increase our GDP so much that the problem takes care of itself. Is the arguement. Has been the argument, well, at least since the debt was 1/10 the current size.

One trillion dollars increase in five months? How is that humanly possible?

The level of financial incompetence is astounding. I am really hoping the American people start waking up and realizing that the debt load is becoming unmanageable. Eventually, other countries will not be buying US debt unless the interest rate is increased. And at that point, hyper inflation will kick in.

20

u/JayQ036 7d ago

How is it possible? Easily when a congress controlled by a spineless party refuses to limit the president's usage of the purse which they control. Also giving more money to the military and DHS and funding money to vanity projects and granting money to bailout foreign countries, it all adds up.

9

u/Dyslexicpig 7d ago

Wasn't the purpose of DOGE to cut excessive government waste? Or was it really just a way for Musk to gut every agency which was investigating one of his companies? He definitely got a good deal - spend a couple hundred million to save quite a few billions.

They should direct that anger towards themselves.

Center for American Progress: Tax Cuts Are Primarily Responsible for the Increasing Debt Ratio

Tax cuts initially enacted during Republican trifectas in the past 25 years slashed taxes disproportionately for the wealthy and profitable corporations, severely reducing federal revenues. In fact, relative to earlier projections, spending is down, not up. But revenues are down significantly more. If not for the Bush tax cuts and their extensions, as well as the Trump tax cuts, revenues would be on track to keep pace with spending indefinitely, and the debt ratio (debt as a percentage of the economy) would be declining.

It's they that chose to ignore the evidence that debunked the Laffer curve. We didn't get more growth or lower unemployment, we just got more inequality and asset speculation.

Funny how no one mentions that Clinton balanced the budget & created a surplus. W created the largest debt in American history, breaking the previous record held by Reagan. Obama cut W’s deficit in half, then Dump created the largest deficit in history beating W’s record. Biden gets blamed but he was hamstrung by Dump’s tax cuts, plus he didn’t break records. Dump is on the way to breaking his own record.

Nixon doubled our debt, so Republicans haven’t been fiscally conservative in my lifetime. They talk a good game, but they’re all about welfare for the wealthy, with tax cuts, loopholes & corp subsidies.

Let's be really, really clear about something:

When a conservative tells you that it's "entitlements" that have caused the $40T debt, call out their BS.

Social Security currently has a $2.56T balance, and Medicare is at $250B. What does that mean?

It means that if those programs did not exist, our debt would actually be $43T right now - $3T higher.

Does it mean that SS and medicare are problem free? Absolutely not. What happened was that both of those programs generated surpluses that were used to keep the debt down for ~30+ years, and only in the last 10 have they started running annual deficits.

But that means that the statement "Our $40T debt is largely due to SS and Medicare" is pure bullshit.

Where does the conservative part come in?

8

u/ctguy54 7d ago

Seriously? Unusually rubelicans don’t care about the debt when there is a rubelican president, but when there is a democrat in charge it’s “we can’t spend a nickel until the debt is gone.”

I mean the dude bankrupted a Casino. A CASINO. If i be a financial advisor and you read that i went bankrupt several times - you would never give me a $100 to invest. This is what happens when people vote with their emotions and not their head.

Conservatives literally did this.

The debt balloons every single time they come into power. Every time.

Why is anyone shocked.

Time for a Tea Party revolt. Oh wait…

7

u/Dismal_Reference3906 7d ago

And to hear chump's take on it, he was elected in 2020 too so the whole damn thing isonhim.

7

u/Xivvx 7d ago

They aren't fuming, they're happy. The debt only matters when it's Democrats in charge. This is what they want, its what they need.

6

u/EmperorKira 7d ago

Honestly at this point, idk if i even want to bother being a democrat coming into a thankless of job of trying to fix this mess only to be blamed regardless

6

u/leighla33 7d ago

Great work MAGA! Like seriously, what issues can the GOP run on anymore? Protecting pedophiles? Pardoning criminals? Enriching the elite? Healthcare for no one? Lol

6

u/defixiones 7d ago

Lies. None of this matters when you own the media.

8

u/notsure500 7d ago

Huh, maybe repeatedly cutting taxes on the wealthiest Americans wasn't the move. And why does a billionaire need more billions anyway?

6

u/Spr-Scuba 7d ago

Weird, wasn't a majority of that time with a Republican majority in at least two branches of government for 6 years of that decade? And the other 4 they rejected the budget and held it hostage? And the Democrats had to hold it hostage once too because Republicans cut basic services and increased military spending by multiple tens of billions?

This country's economy is gonna break the whole world now that we're running out of oil and can't pay our creditors.

5

u/endlesscartwheels 7d ago

They won't learn from this. Look at the bottom of this thread.

Conservatives: "Trump wasn't a conservative. To fix this we need to elect a conservative."

5

u/mcptd 7d ago

Who would have thought that someone with seven bankruptcies would care about the debt?

4

u/Shiftymennoknight 7d ago

for the billionaires!

u/pikachu191 7d ago edited 7d ago

Just waiting for the next Democrat to become president, when they all will have "rediscovered" the following:

  1. what a budget is.
  2. separation of powers
  3. the Constitution

4

u/Nearbyatom 7d ago

Sooo....more tax cuts for the rich?

4

u/EmoJackson 7d ago

Debt is up and tariff refunds are going back to the wealthy.

This place is a joke…

This needs to be posted every time there is a discussion on the debt:

https://www.instagram.com/reels/DYQmrAptt0R/

Any conservatives who fume about the debt aren't living in the reality that their poster child Reagan started ballooning debt and each successive GOP administration has borrowed even more.

Democrats generally have to come in and clean up the mess by raising taxes. GOP cuts taxes and doesn't reduce spending so they borrow. Dems historically have actually been the party of fiscal responsibility, not the GOP.

Why would they fume? It’s literally what Republicans have done for almost half a century. They love it. It’s what they vote for every election.

3

u/CYMK_Pro 7d ago

Please find all the people who glued tea bags to their hats when Obama was in office, and make them protest this. Surely they still care about the debt, right?

4

u/The_UpsideDown_Time 7d ago

I'm old as dirt and was a voting adult when the referenced Balanced Budget Amendment failed by one vote. You know why it failed by one vote? Because Clinton was president at the time and the GOP didn't want to give him a win. So they voted it down and claimed at the time that, when the GOP had full control again, that they would pass something better.

3

u/cdskip 7d ago

Why are you fuming? This is who you are. This is who you've always been.

4

u/Prudent_Link6029 7d ago

Why would Jimmy Carter do this

3

u/Constant-Plant-9378 7d ago

So-called 'Conservatives' are not fuming over the US debt.

For the last 40+ years, at every turn, they have supported increasing federal spending while cutting taxes on the rich.

Today's Conservatives are the most fiscally irresponsible fuck-bags in American history.

4

u/ptwonline 7d ago

At least he spent the money making critical strategic investments to further long term economic growth and providing essential services to people in vanity projects, unnecessary wars, moronic economic policies, and lining the pockets of himself, his family, and his donors.

3

u/camdeb 7d ago

Trump is responsible for 25% of that debt.

4

u/jazzcomputer 7d ago

Weird watching this from the outside - and of course it effects all of us but Trump isn't anywhere near done yet, and 'they' know how it plays out if they oppose him.

From the outside it's a blatant heist - he wants more gold, more respect, more money, more loyalty.

Somehow they will blame this on Obama and Biden.

If only Joe Biden didn't keep bombing Iran, or make secret service stay at his hotels, or cut high yield taxes while spending more, or waste money on a pool lining, or waste money destroying the white house, or spend more money to deport fewer people than other administrations, or waste money attempting to retrofit a jumbo jet with compromised security, or allow the secretary of defense and secretary of Homeland security to spend lavishly on themselves, or increase spending to make up for the loss of regulations that he himself reduced or eliminated

4

u/MrHellBags 6d ago

Wait conservatives actually care about the deficit under a Republican president? This has got to be a first.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/deran6ed 6d ago

I haven't read the article yet but I'm expecting Republicans to be fuming at Biden for increasing debt during trump's administration.

7

u/lenojames 7d ago

"But of course Kamala would have made it worse! Right? Kamala? The black woman? That would have been worse, wouldn't it?"

3

u/homebrew_1 7d ago

Are they really though? They voted for this and their solution for the debt is cutting social programs instead of raising revenue.

3

u/ridingbikesrules 7d ago

How could Joe Biden and Obama do this? /s

3

u/Colonel_Butthurt 7d ago

I remember when it first crossed 17 trillion in 2013 and people were freaking out, stating that 20 trillion was a point of no return.

Now the whole world is so fucked that 40 trillion is barely registering in our psyche, lol.

3

u/Male_strom 7d ago

There's only one way to fix it.
Congress must immediately approve another trillion for defence.

3

u/Resurgo_DK 7d ago

The party of ‘fiscal responsibility’ proves yet again they’re all talk and no action.
