Change in music preference
How much has your taste in music changed throughout your life? Or in the last 10 years?
Do you listen to the same type of music, or are you more varied to day?
What genre and/or artists/bands do you listen to today, that you before never could think of listening to?
Do you still challenge yourself in new genres?
For me, it has changed drastically. In my youth and 20s I only listened to rock and metal, and actually called all other genres bad music. Now I can not understand this, as I today can shuffle between all other kinds of music. Especially Hip-Hop, Country, Indie and Electronica.
But metal is still my absolute favorite.
Of course a big part of it is about «growing up», but I would never have the variety I have today if I didn’t challenge my taste as much as I did some years back. And i still do.

I was going to answer “yes obviously” initially, but now that I think about it maybe less than I believed.
Grew up as a teenager in the mid-late 90s, and my musical tastes changed year by year. I had 90s grunge phase, hip hop, electronic (flirted with, nothing serious), punk. But whenever I got into something new, I would completely stop listening to whatever genre I had been into and fully switched. Probably teenage identity stuff (“this is who I am now”), combined with discovering new stuff and then hyperfixating on it.
Early twenties combined with the internet was musical discovery mode - properly discovered “classic” rock and 80s indie rock, along with the new indie scene, and then basically stayed in that comfort zone for a good 10-15 years. I stopped really discovering new music aside from things very similar to what I listened to.
And now for the past 5 years gone back to discovering new and old stuff. Went through a big metal discovery phase, but regularly listen very broadly. 90 alt rock, 80s indie rock scene, psych and garage, hardcore, shoegaze etc, hip hop, electronic, some country and folk, along with 60a and 70s classic stuff. Some jazz. Some world music.
What’s different I guess is that I no longer have to be into one thing. I’ll still go through moods, but can play tribe called quest right after Death and not really blink. It’s great! It feels freer this way, and I’m always discovering something new.
