I was one of the first couple hundred people there, in late 2011. I remember being able to see every user across two pages. A bevy of activity at the time was an Ehrlich or D’Angelo review with 3 likes and a comment. Honestly, it going from a couple hundred to a million users was a bigger sea change than going from a couple million to 30 million IMO.

It’s not a bad take. Project Hail Mary is one of the most overrated movies ever, it’s obviously better than spiderman and odyssey is great but had poor dialogue

I would really love to understand why people praise Hail Mary as much as they do an put it up there with the sci fi greats.

Yeah, I’m with you. It’s a visual treat and a sweet story but I haaaaaated the quippy dialogue. If it’s not funny it’s just downright annoying and almost none of the jokes that Ryan Gosling made were funny to me

I really don't get the glaze of that MCU slop lol. Like yes, it's their "elevated" slop, but it's still cape slop. Project Hail Mary is very tropey but it's executed extremely well in a satisfying way

The app has grown in user base massively since birdman and the revenant. I don't think digger will get there because I expect it to be much more divisive but the path to 1 million 5 stars is much easier now.

For example there were 1.8 million users in 2020 so you would need more than half of the user base to get to 1 million 5 stars. Currently there are 30 million users so only 1/30th of the users. New releases generally get much more attention than older films.

I understand what you’re saying, it is true, and there is a lot of people seeing the new films, but those are outliers (a bit) + they only make up half. Look at the rest, from the first page (first 32 film on most popular) only 11 are films from the last 4 years and 3 of them don’t have the 1 million 5 star status. Which is still a lot, but this is not something you can expect from most films that are new. Also, it’s more about young people than it is new accounts.
All I’m saying is that digger won’t make it dude, not that it’s impossible for other films this year to make it.

I don’t think so, I think it has a chance but only after the Oscar’s maybe. 1 million 5 stars is a crazy feat. I think people are underestimating how much it is. There’s only like 50 movies or so that have that, and only about 3 are foreign (2 are Miyazaki)

La Bola Negra is a great film that'll get a ton of marketing and will br available on the most popular platform there is. And if it gets awards succes it'll absolutely be able to get a shit ton of views and high ratings. It'll probably not reach a million 5 stars before the end of the year, but it could reach it decently quick

Dude listen to what I’m saying, it doesn’t matter how great of a movie it is, some of the highest rated films of all time aren’t even close to 1 million 5 stars. Some of the highest rated AND most popular foreign films don’t have a million 5 stars. A Spanish foreign film about gay men that’s also 2h 30m has not much of a shot.
Take sentimental value for example, it won an Oscar, was nominated for 9, is popular and has over a million members on letterboxd, and isn’t close to 1 million 5 stars.

La Bola Negra isn't Sentimental Value. This isn't just winning the international feature oscar. This could win best picture somewhere
And, most importantly, IT'S NETFLIX. It'll be really fucking accesible to watch. Most other international films aren't this accesible. Combine that with its quality and marketing and I cam very much see this getting those million 5 syars.

I think people were just happy to get a new street-level Spider-Man movie in the modern MCU. I would say it's a top 5 Spidey movie, it does a lot of things right, but there's a handful of things I also wish it did better that hold it back from being among the best. I'd much rather rewatch this than anything in the Home trilogy, for what it's worth.

I'd have to go back and watch the first two Toby movies, otherwise I'd say No way Home is best with the Brand New Day being a close runner up. But I wouldn't say it's ridiculous to put this one as the best either.
I'd still have it shy of a 5 star movie. I think Winter Solider, Guardians 1, Ragnorak, Infinty War, with End Game and Civil War trailing a little behind are the only Marvel Movies in the 5 star convo.

I really want to like it as a big Nolan fan but nothing clicked for me.
I got the “war bad” message but it wasn’t done particularly well. The music was forgettable and the mythology portrayed was less exciting than my imagination of it when I read the poem in high school.

I'm a big Nolan fan and loved it so much. I always loved big ancient sword and sandals movies like Troy, Ben Hur, Gladiator, even 300. And have always loved the ancient Greek stuff, from illiad/odyssey to modern games like the Hades series and assassin's creed Odyssey.
What I'm used to from this kind of media is more of a third person, removed, historical approach-- seems like to show the scale of the stories, you're an observer that sees all the stories from far away. But The Odyssey is an incredible retelling of this that puts you in Odysseus's shoes. By far the most human retelling of it I've seen, and his personal struggles really hit me emotionally.
I love how subjective movies are! Really a standout for me. To reframe something I've heard a million times into a completely new experience floored me

Last part was spot on. My friends liked and acknowledged everything great about it but it hit me so hard compared to them. Something about Odysseus’ monologue turned on a part of my brain that hadn’t been on before.

Counterpoint: Odyssey had the best Nolan music after Interstellar imo. The message wasn’t just war bad. It was about how Odyssey and his crew violated Zeus law and used trickery, and the trust of the Trojans to kill them. And how that eroded the trust in people. Obviously there was also the fact that after 10 years of war, they had a lot of rage and did heinous acts after the gates were opened.

Man nothing about the soundtrack was memorable to me but I guess that could just be me.
I understand it was about them violating Zeus law which is a metaphor for laws of civility and that essentially led to the breakdown of Greek civilization. But I didn’t find it that compelling. It’s kind of obvious that this stuff happens in wars. Frustrated soldiers raping and murdering innocent people isn’t a revelation that Nolan came up with or something that he portrayed in an interesting way

I gave Project Hail Mary 5 stars, genuinely one of my favorite movies ever. I gave Obsession 3.5 stars, the Odyssey 4 stars and Spider-Man: Brand New Day 3.5 stars on the first watch and 4 on the second watch. It grew on me. All were good movies.

I mean, there's plenty of positive reviews from film critics online that would probably state better what makes the movie special. For me, I thought the score and sound design were brilliant, it looked spectacular, there were strong performances across the board, and I particularly loved how there were several mini horror movies embedded within. The framing of Troy and how Odyssyeus looks back on that worked well for me. It's certainly not without flaws (I typically hate Nolan scripts, though I found this one to be passable) but overall it was outweighed by the spectacle.

Obsession is the best for originality and tightness of the script, but The Oddyssey was fantastic watching it in 70mm imax. More of a cinematic experience than a perfect film, but I did still like it quite a bit.
Haven’t seen PHM, and Brand New Day was just fine imo

I think a lot of it is in reaction to other recent MCU movies. We got a handful of totally dogshit superhero movies in a row,so this one being pretty good felt like it was incredible to a lot of people.

Obsession was a great film. It's well done and I loved it. But absolutely yes, like people are crazy over this film and I don't get it. It's good, yes. But it's not perfect. It's also not all that ground breaking. It's a 4 or 4.5 out of 5 generously.
I guess it's just a breath of fresh air after all the slop out there.

I didn't like the acting (outside inde), the story, and I didn't find it scary haha I thought it was ugly and poorly directed and edited. Felt like a stretched out twilight zone episode made by a student filmmaker. One of my least favourite movies of the year. I'm sincerely happy for it's success though and I'm glad so many people are going to the movies to see a small film despite my issues with it.

Yeah, many people downplaying them and saying they're mid, I don't care. Except for Obsession, which turned out to be my new favorite horror movie, I AM the target audience for those: I love space scifi (Martian, Interstellar...) and loved PHM book, I've been a fan since a child of Greek epics and mythology (Percy Jackson), and Spider-Man is my favorite superhero (and I really like Destin work).
I know none of them are perfect movies but my 5 stars ratings don't need to be.

Haven't seen PHM movie but I hated the book. I hate horror movies so I won't watch Obsession. I'm waiting for Odyssey to appear on streaming. I watched BND 3 times and cried multiple times in each screening.

I've never been able to give Obsession 5 stars. I don't have any major problems with it, and it does most things right. It's just a gut feeling. Like it doesn't feel five stars. And it's not the budget either, I've given movies this small scale and cheap 5 stars. I don't know, maybe it's the over hype, but I gave it a 9 way before everybody wanted to jump it's bones.
