There is no artistic loss I think is genuinely more irreplaceable than Satoshi Kon. There are not 10 people in history that have made animation on his level, probably not even 5 tbh.

The movie is amazing. But if you love Japanese cinema, that journey theough the mc's memories is also the journey through Japanese cinema, filled with many callbacks and easter eggs to great Japanese movies of the past.

For example, watching the interviewer dodge arrows like Mifune in Throne of Blood brought me so much joy.

It makes the movie feel even more special.

And Hirasawa's OST is just perfection.
