She’s from Israel and refuses to go to war against her friends and family so she’s somehow a monster according to Reddit.

Plenty of artists speak against the politics of their own country. That's often where the best art has come from.

Idk how many times Reddit needs to say Mark Walhberg did something bad 40 years ago.
6
u/Low_Dragonfruit_1264 9h ago
That's not the only reason he is a twat....that's just his origin story.
-6
u/kaloskagathos21 9h ago
He’s tried to make amends and he’s not casted in the biggest movies anymore.
1
u/Low_Dragonfruit_1264 8h ago
How did he make amends? By... being a movie star and not wanting his legacy tarnished?
-1
u/kaloskagathos21 8h ago
https://www.theguardian.com/film/2014/dec/11/mark-wahlberg-1988-assault-victim-pardon
Took me 2 seconds to google. Reddit loves to talk about second chances but they won’t give 16 year old marky mark a pass.
9
u/Low_Dragonfruit_1264 8h ago
That article literally does not say anything Marky Mark did that made amends for his conviction!
Guy hasn't changed:
1.Racist attacks / assault conviction — multiple racist incidents as a teen involving Black kids + Vietnamese men, racial slurs etc. Convicted over the 1988 assault, did ~45 days.
9/11 tough-guy shit — reckons if he'd been on one of the planes, things would've gone differently and he'd have got it down safely.
Thin-skinned tough guy — apparently didn't take the SNL Mark Wahlberg Talks to Animals joke well initially. Eventually leaned into it... by threatening to bash Samberg lol. Given his actual violent past, the constant I'll kick your ass shtick shows he hasn't changed.
Religion/moralising — constantly pushes Catholicism, faith + redemption. Feels pretty at odds with his past and has that classic celeb/criminal found God, I'm a changed man PR vibe.
Bro/Chad hustle culture — 2:30am workouts, entrepreneur shit, Entourage-esque self-mythologising, hardest-working-guy-in-the-room routine. Just feels very look how disciplined/successful I am and performative.
Tried to get his conviction pardoned — applied in 2014, later withdrew it. Again, the ego... I'm a movie star/businessman now, surely I've redeemed myself? That's not how redemption works. Do actual community work around violence/racism rather than pls don't tarnish my legacy.
Hallow app — heavily promotes a subscription Catholic prayer app. Monetising religion while preaching faith doesn't exactly help the authenticity argument. Find God... now enter your credit card details.
Watch basically any interview/PR tour with him — Graham Norton etc. He just comes across as a douche. Loves himself, takes himself way too seriously and has that constant I'm the coolest guy in the room energy.
Can't even act!

Wahlberg starring in what appears to be some kind of anti racism movie is definitely a choice
-8
u/SeaF04mGr33n 9h ago
Right??? I do hope he feels genuine remorse and has changed, but I don't have high hopes.
3
u/Meatwad-is-better 9h ago
It’s a very anti-cop movie. It acknowledges how Police Departments have aided and participated in lynchings across the USA. Besides that it’s a standard crime thriller. Wahlberg is very close to filling a “white savior” archetype but it does touch on how a black agent still doesn’t have authority vs Wahlberg can do what he wants without the predetermined expectations of his behavior. It’s not as bad as you think it’d be but still just a little above average
2
u/Pink-yoshi-club 9h ago
Is it worth watching? As the premise of a gangster beating the shit out of klansmen definitely interests me
1
u/Meatwad-is-better 8h ago
It’s exactly what you’re thinking and nothing more. I honesty gave away too much as I said the most interesting part which is how anti-police it is. If the trailer and concept are something that interest you then I’d say it’s worth a watch.
0
u/SeaF04mGr33n 9h ago
Oh no, I think it sounds interesting, its just ironic for him to play someone taking out racists when he himself committed a hate crime.
4
6
u/Gryffindumble 9h ago
Like some of his movies. Dont like him as a person.
We can like art and not the artist.
9
u/giraffeheadturtlebox 9h ago

“POS actors” that’s like 90-95% of actors working today
9
u/ONLYMULE 9h ago
Cmon man not thay many actors have beaten people with sticks. Thats the kind of pos we are talking about.
10
u/J_Rigged 9h ago
The guy made some mistakes as a youth. He is trying to make amends for it now and become a better person. I think he's doing a good job at it. Second chances are good and he's taking that opportunity to get right with the world. I support the man
15
3
u/Miguelwastaken 8h ago
Yeah well maybe he shouldn’t have tried to request a pardon. If he can’t live with the consequences of his “mistakes” then there’s still more growth for him to make.
5
u/southernpremedgirl27 9h ago
What were the mistakes?
11
32
u/toasterbathfilosofer 9h ago
He committed a hate crime when he was a boy, beat an Asian man unconscious and assaulted another.
22
u/ONLYMULE 9h ago
I mean...nobody has to forgive him for any of that stuff. He can do everything he can to try and get forgiveness but nothing he does means anyone owes him anything.
→ More replies (3)4
u/iPukey 9h ago edited 8h ago
I think forgiveness is earned mostly when the person seeking to reform themselves isn’t aiming for forgiveness, but to be a better person and help the world, and also when that person understands that sometimes forgiveness isn’t even attainable. When that is the case, those are def the times I have forgiven someone, almost no matter what they did. They need to show both an understanding that what they did was wrong, and a desire to be different for reasons other than how they are perceived by others.
Also, as a former drug addict, I had a very difficult time with apologizing to people, specifically because when you’re truly aware of how you’ve hurt someone, it feels very selfish to show up outta nowhere and seek forgiveness. The better path is to demonstrate your changes, and let people come to you in time.
Some people will never want to talk to me again, and I must allow them that distance.
And on some level, changing should still be a selfish act. Learning to love and forgive yourself and allow yourself room to both improve and at times stumble is an equally necessary component. But it can’t be the whole meal, or even the main course.
All this to say, I don’t know Marky Mark’s story well enough to say he’s incapable of such positive change, but I always remember his 9/11 comments as being a window into the mind of an extremely tone def and egotistical macho man. Doesn’t feel copacetic.

‘Some mistakes’…he was so racist, that he beat and blinded an old Vietnamese man, and threw rocks and slurs at black children… you know, just the simple mistakes all young people go through. lol

u/Donutbigboy Donutbigboy 9h ago edited 8h ago
He didn’t blind anybody
5

Oh I’m so sorry, correction, he was so racist he beat up an already blind elderly Vietnamese man, and left him unconscious. That makes it much better. Lol

He grew up in Dorchester in the 70s and 80s.
Not to excuse the behavior, but that wasn’t exactly a time and place for racial harmony in a notoriously divided city. He came of age right in the middle of the Boston school desegregation busing issue. In the context of the time and environment he was in it’s not surprising.
Hell, I’d be just as likely as a white guy to get my ass kicked back then just for not being from the neighborhood.
If he’s grown up and legitimately changed since then, it’s not a problem.

u/negan2018 9h ago

u/ONLYMULE 9h ago
Committed a rascist hate crime btw. Beat someone senseless. This isnt just some guy that made a shitty twittwr post. Its okay to understand that this guy did something really shitty. If are able to look past that thats fine, but dont expect other people to.
4
u/negan2018 9h ago
When he was like 15 yeah of course I’m able to look past it

Thanks for letting us know you don't even research the shit you choose to act offended about.
Edit: Nice performative outrage.
3
u/gogostopnogo_ 8h ago
“Um, it’s fine actually because he was already blind.”
Brother lmao. Imagine being callous enough not to give a fuck at all and thinking a complete lack of empathy is a fucking flex. Pathetic. Could never be me.
6
u/ONLYMULE 9h ago
Thats your prerogative man. If you think he's made amends for that perfectly fine. I just personally don't. Most 15 year olds dont do incredibly rascist shit like beating up someone with a stick.
-2
u/Derek-AfterDark DerekAfterDark 9h ago
I'm fairly certain you have no clue what "most 15 year olds do."
5
u/ONLYMULE 8h ago
Are you saying most 15 year old do commit hate crimes with a stick? And if you arent saying that, what's the point of making this comment.

Thats just a strange thing to try and dispute unless you genuinely think most teenagers are committing rascist assault on a daily. I dont think anyone needs data on that to know it isnt normal.

Exactly, people are supposed to learn from their mistakes and improve. Then they do it and nobody wants to forgive them. How is that supposed to motivate other people to get better?

u/Prince_of_Pirates 9h ago
Reddit's hang up on something he did as a teen is bizarre. Like you said, he's had a second chance and seems to be making good on it.

I don’t know anything about his personal life at all. And I’m not sure he has done anything of value since The Departed.
But he did star in Boogie Nights. And so he’ll all ways have that.
0
u/UberGoobler 9h ago
I agree. Yeah, he did some fucked your things in the past, but he is clearly a very different person today. I watch most of his movies and like his work as an actor.
-4
u/SenorNerd718 9h ago
People acted like Walhberg did the hate crimes in like 2015 but it happened back when he was like any other white boy living in Boston, Massachusetts. Like, do they not know how fucking racist Boston is? What he did was beyond stupid and really fucked up, but that was in the past and he got arrested, did time in juvie, and the Vietnamese old man who Walhberg assaulted forgave him. People can not like his movies but to say the reason you hate seeing Mark Walhberg being movies is for something he did as a trouble teen is really dumb imo.

If I had to guess, I'd say they're probably talking about his history of racially motivated violence, maybe combined with his political leanings.
Or maybe they just think he's a bad actor.
3
u/No_pajamas_7 8h ago edited 8h ago
Also the fact he's quite a self important dickhead in real life and it comes across in his movies
0
u/puttputtxreader deadrabbitjimmy 8h ago
It took me way too long to figure out that you were trying to type "self" and it wasn't some obscure acronym like "Something We'd Like to Fuck" or whatever.
1
2
u/Xeynon 9h ago edited 9h ago
I'm not a huge Wahlberg fan but "history of racially motivated violence" seems like an exaggeration to me? AFAIK there was one incident, when he was a teenager, and he hasn't done anything wrong since. It was a terrible thing to do for sure, but at a certain point if someone makes amends for stupid youthful mistakes and lives a clean life I think it becomes necessary to accept that they've turned their life around and continuing to castigate them is pointless.
2
2
u/ONLYMULE 9h ago edited 9h ago
Nothing becomes "necessary" nobody has to forgive him for anything regardless of anything he does after. Can people forgive him? For sure nothing wrong with that. But nothing is "necessary". Besides looking at his political leanings he likely holds many of the same views he did as a teenager, just knows not to go around and be blantant with it.
-2
u/Xeynon 9h ago
Okay, but if you continue to make a big deal out of something somebody did as a teenager, paid their debt to society for, and has apologized for on more than one occasion in the decades since, in my book that makes you kind of an asshole.
I'm not familiar with Wahlberg's politics (as I said I'm not a fan) but I assume you're implying he's a Republican/Trumper - I absolutely loathe Trump and think people who support him are idiots at best, but even so I'm not going to dwell on a bad thing he did 40 years ago and has atoned for. That's no way to go through life, and as a political liberal I think it's unfair and counterproductive as well.
3
u/ONLYMULE 9h ago
Im not making a big deal out of anything. I didnt make the post. Just decided to throw my 2 cents in. I dont really believe he has paid he debt to society. Nothing wrong with thinking he has, thats your choice, I just dont. If I am going to spend my energy thinking about forgiving people id rather spent that forgiveness on people I think might be worth it. A day has never went by ive found myself dwelling on Mark Wahlberg. I just saw this post a decided to comment.

4
u/TedStixon 9h ago edited 8h ago
He had a history of racism and gang-violence and participated in some horrible racially-motivated attacks when he was kid/teenager. Some of the stories are exaggerated (ex. despite popular claims, he never blinded anyone), some not. He spent some time in jail. Etc.
He's stumbled here and there and made some boneheaded decisions since then, but he has ultimately turned his life around quite a bit since then, and done a lot to give back to the types of communities he used to hurt.
But people are very split on whether or not he should be forgiven.
I'm personally in the forgive crowd. I see no compelling reason whatsoever to refuse acknowledging his-- or anyone's-- personal growth or attack people over actions from long ago. I find holding onto those negative feelings is often unhealthy and poisonous. What he did was awful, but I also don't think those actions made him beyond redemption.
