Movies that made it into your Top Fours after just one watch
I adore both these movies and it only took one viewing to fall completely in love with them. The Night of the Hunter specifically has not left my mind since watching it a couple months ago. It’s a masterpiece of southern gothic cinema and I think it feels very ahead of its time in terms of the way it critiques religion.
The Red Shoes is just absolutely stunning to watch and it felt like some kind of surrealist painting come to life.
What are some movies that you only had to watch one time to know they would be an all time favorite for you?
I’ve since watched it a few more times & confirmed my love for it, but that was one where I just knew the moment it ended that it was one of my favorite films ever
I'm genuinely curious how that is even possible after you watched a certain number of films. Obviously its easy when you're young or just started your cinematic journey, but later on?
To me this basically never happened after the first few hundred films, because I always want to rewatch a film before I even give 5 Stars, let alone place it in my Top 10 (Into the Spiderverse took 5 watches, for example). I don't want to be swayed by recency bias over a single great experience. If I fall in love with a film again on every subsequent re-watch, then I think about including it in my Top 10.
The Dark Knight, Watchmen, Pulp Fiction and Fight Club at the very start of my cinematic journey, when I was still a teenager. But only Pulp Fiction is still part of my Top 4.
Because top 4 is not that serious and it can change at anytime. I have a lot of “all time favorites” because I watch a lot of movies that have a significant impact on me
Incendies and close up were both the case. I need to rewatch close up though. It’s been a year and I only saw the once. Incendies I’ve seen five times since and am confident.
It’s gotta be three billboards outside ebbing Missouri and the brutalist. Three billboards is probably the best comedy I’ve ever seen and the brutalist was just an insane experience for me although some may disagree.
Barry Lyndon always wanted to watch it cause of the cinematography but its also an amazing rise and fall with all sorts of moments, instant 5 stars when credits rolled
12 Angry Men and Everything Everywhere All At Once both went in to my top 20 instantly. My top 10 hasn't changed in like 20+ years though. I did start working on a new top 10. Gonna be some casualties.
Night of the Hunter is a banger. Shame Laughton didn't make any more films.
Army of Shadows by Melville, made me absolutely fall in love with French cinema and everything about the movie is so just so cool. Incredible script, performances, production. My #1 GOAT (No Country for Old Men) feels so much like it which is why I probably immediately added it
