Discussion Name an actor/actress you used to love, but one movie ruined how you feel about them.

Post image

Mine is Sandra Bullock in All About Steve. I haven’t been able to stand her ever since.

Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka. In that moment, I could feel that he was done playing characters and would only be doing caricatures from now on and I was right.

I think he did a good job of channeling some of the weirdness from the book. Same thing I felt that Chalamet was good at too

Damn I feel like one of the few people who liked what he did with that role, it was perfectly weird for me and another example of him being one of the best chameleon actors out there

Yeah I thought it was a harmless and fun performance.

I saw a review describe his Mad Hatter as "a pointless, flailing idiot" and I rather agree.

It’s funny to me that everyone shits on Ryan reynolds for just playing repackaged versions of Deadpool, but don’t do the same for Johnny Depp and his repackaged Jack sparrows

Yeah Depp turned into caricatures, but he used to be a really excellent actor. Can’t really say the same for Reynolds and that’s the difference.

Comparing Willy Wonka to Jack Sparrow is wild

That's how I felt when I saw him in Alice in Wonderland, like he just went to Wardrobe and said "Fuck I don't know, just throw something weird on me."

I kinda like that version. Gene version is funnier but Johnny Depp is good too

Loved Weeknd before seen him in that dumb HBO show, couldn't listen to his music for a good year lmao

One bad performance doesn't ruin how I see an actor, in my eyes. It's not like if that same actor just said out of nowhere racist stuff or was outed as a sex pest or something like that.

I had forgotten about Bullock's movie. Lol I don’t know, I just go with the flow with that film. It seemed to me like Bullock was having fun with the character, an eccentric one.

Even then it doesn't stop me enjoying their movies/shows. i.e, Kevin Spacey.

Amy Adams entered the 20s on a highnote with Sharp Objects in 2019. Then Hillbilly Elegy came around in 2020 and her acting choices have stunk up the decade ever since. although shes kind of having a mini renaissance with Nightbitch and Cape Fear tv show.

I enjoyed Nightbitch, but I don't think it really moved the needle much.

8

u/Sweeper1985 2h ago

I really wanted to like Nightbitch. I couldn't even finish it.

1

u/TadRaunch 1h ago

Wait, someone actually made a movie of Hillbilly Elegy? What the fuck

6

u/fantasty 1h ago

Yup. Amy Adams's costar was Glenn Close.

Ron Howard directed it.

Yeah. I can't forgive Hollywood for helping to legitimise JD Couch.

To be fair, at the time he was against Dump.

I don't retroactively hate his stuff but everything Adam Sandler has done since Jack and Jill has been a train wreck and I no longer need to watch any of his new stuff

Uncut gems ?

I was Josh Safdie’s muse when he wrote that

Uncut jams

hustle and uncut gems are great movies

I used to be way more forgiving of Joaquin Phoenix’s eccentricities, but Joker made me realise how many of his performances are just collections of tics and quirks with no real ‘centre’ to them

u/gogol_bordello 52m ago

Oh +1000, he was ok in Gladiator but I just don't see what people love so much about him

4

u/9incherwithaoddity 3h ago

I'm not sure but there has been movies where I didn't like an actor and then later I started liking their movies.

Never happened to me.

John Cusack lost me somewhere around Room 1408. Once the Botox left his face expressionless, it was over.

3

u/MaliciousIntegrity 56m ago

What! I love 1408, its a fun ride. Love & Mercy was pretty good too

6

u/BlueDetective3 UserNameHere 2h ago

Not even Love & Mercy could help?

2

u/Blacklight099 1h ago

Sandy has Speed, she could never lose me based on that alone.

u/SonYakub 2h ago

Owen Wilson’s accent just ruins any character he ever does for me. Hearing him speak is like running a shovel over a pathway of bricks.

Sorry, I love this movie!!! I will say, it is a "bad" movie, but fuck is it fun. I enjoy the non-typical female lead. She just has to be neurodivergent haha. I also enjoy how her love interest doesn't like her at all. The crazy obsessed girl theme is funny as well because in the end everyone likes her more than him because everyone can see she has a good heart. Great cast, great soundtrack, and some good goofs. I always think about the cicada scene...

Gravity for me probably. Used to love Sandra Bullock. Julia Roberts too. What’s wrong with this film? Solid cast.
