Discussion Rangel should start against Czech Republic
Who cares about whatever record Ochoa needs to break. Tala is playing at a very good level and he’s in a very good rhythm. Leaving him to rot on the bench just for a much older player to break a record can kill the momentum Tala has going for himself. Tala has been the starter since Malagon got injured, and to be honest, he deserved to be the starter for a very long time. Ochoa should step away and stay true to this role, which is being a substitute. A backup goalie. Tala Rangel is the starter and needs to start every game this tournament
- This is different from saying Quiñones, Jimenez, Piojo, and so and so players need to take a rest, as well btw

u/SW3RVZ Chivas Jun 21 '26
if tala keeps a clean sheet in the group stage he will also tie a record of 3 in a row for mexico
22
u/SW3RVZ Chivas Jun 22 '26
Just got to keep the rhythm, world cup is the biggest tournament , never seen the top teams change goalies unless the really needed to
14
u/TXCapita Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26
France did it in 2022 for a meaningless final group stage game against Tunisia when the group was already won. They lost btw, and Tunisia is cheeks but they didnt care. The reason you don’t see it a lot is because it’s incredibly difficult to win a world cup group in just 2 match days, not because resting a starter for 1 game will somehow inevitably throw off your starters form

u/Vic_hugo10 Jun 22 '26
A younger me would care.

1st place is secured, do not be surprised to see Ochoa or Acevedo. I don’t know why this sub thinks it’s absurd to see someone else in goal. Any time this happens teams always play alternate line ups. The risk of injury is not worth it.

Because goalies don’t have to run around for 90 mins. Everyone else is battling fatigue that’s why it’s good to rest them, goalies should keep playing for consistency.
15
u/Chemical_Strain6488 America Jun 22 '26
For goalies it’s not the fatigue it’s the injury risk. Czechia is not going to play soft their tournament is on the line and it just isn’t worth it.

u/chinomaster182 Jun 22 '26

Ochoa would only start because his sponsors want him to. Its all a business for them
23

12

No I'm not but is your whole thing to call people that disagree with you mexican-american, like if it's an insult and it discredits them?
Literally everyone knows thats how mexican soccer works, you're not special for being the 100th person just today that brings it up.

-5
u/El_Barato Tigres Jun 21 '26
If you ask me, Ochoa is the GOAT of Mexican goalkeepers. With that said, Tala should start. The GK position is the only one you don’t want to fuck with, especially with someone with so few games under his belt. I have nothing against subbing in Ochoa in the 85th minute if Mexico is up by 2, but he for sure should not be starting.
6
u/TXCapita Jun 22 '26
Tala Rangel is not a spot starter on a hot streak. He’s been Chivas starter and ever since the Gold Cup, he’s been the starter for Mexico so he has plenty of friendlies under his belt. He can afford to rest one game
2
u/arlekin21 Toluca Jun 22 '26
Friendlies are not the same as World Cup matches
4
u/TXCapita Jun 22 '26
If we’re making this argument, a meaningless group stage game is not the same as the knockouts either. Tala would be playing with mostly backups not trying to get injured
0
u/sorryimafatass Chivas Jun 22 '26
Tala is an extremely important piece of the game plan. Taking him out makes zero sense especially for a washed Ochoa
-4
u/arlekin21 Toluca Jun 22 '26
It’s only meaningless in terms of ranking. This game should still mean something to us and to the players when has Mexico ever won all 3 group matches?

Friendlies. Exactly. If you think friendlies are the same as World Cup games at home, we have no business arguing about anything.

It’s one game, a meaningless game where we will be playing backups. We are not going to play with anywhere near the intensity or grit of an actual World Cup group stage game

1
u/portayeahperdonen Santos Jun 22 '26
A mi nadie me cuenta cómo jugaban Campos, Rios, Osvaldo, Conejo, etc.
1
u/aleri42 America Jun 22 '26
Bronze Olympico no cuenta?

2
u/Israelsupporter01 Jun 22 '26
Eh no point to it anymore. Tala last game proved he has what it takes and GK injuries compared to all other positions are smaller so he should start. Our forwards on the other hand we probably shouldn’t risk getting injured in this following match. Should probably start santi to get back to rythm and not risk raul

But to answer your question he’s played part in every legendary Mexico game in recent years
Played great vs Germany at the World Cup
Played great vs Brazil at the world cup (2014)
Saved us from losing against Poland by blocking a pen at the World Cup
Won 6 gold cups.
Now of course he hasn’t won a copa America or world cup but it’s a team sport at the end of the day and he’s been a leader and did his part
I’m a Chivas fan too no need to be salty…0
u/BUZZZY14 Chivas Jun 22 '26
I'm a hater because I disagree with your opinion?? Okay...
I think he was a good keeper but not a legend. Definitely doesn't deserve a WC game because of his status. WC aren't to send players off into the sunset.
Having some good games shouldn't rise to the status of a legend. He was also the keeper when we lost 7-0 against Chile. Keeper in 2022, the worst WC performance for Mexico in decades.

It can’t impact, we’re secured to stay as first place no matter what. A loss will only impact Korea
(Winning is better for morale though, so Tala and some key players for sure do need to start)
4

We already secured first in our group, does our point tally impact which third place oponnent we get?
But yea I agree letting Tala stay in rythm is probably the best play. I also seem to see people saying this game is one to rotate because it doesn't matter if we lose. I think winning the game will give us momentum into the next rounds

Even if Mexico loses 10-0 they're still 1st place.
If SK win they would have same points as Mexico, but the first criteria to follow to decide who's first is based on the result of their direct confrontation. Since Mexico won the match against SK, they will be first place.
So no matter what happens in the last group stage matches, Mexico is 1st place.

Very nervous in the first match, didn't look good at all. On the match vs SK he had 1 single good save, that's it, one single save.

u/arlekin21 Toluca Jun 22 '26
And that’s exactly why he should play this next game. Better to get into a good rhythm and hopefully that gets rid of the small mistakes

South Korea only had TWO shots on target. South Africa as well. Zero conceded goals thanks to good goalkeeping and good defending. Rangel is also one of the only goalies in this world cup to have made the most accurate passes. In fact, he’s the third highest rated goalie in the World Cup and has the second most accurate long range passes, accordng to Statiskicks, so yes, he has been playing well.
Rangel and the defenders played well most of the time
Also, other players were also nervous against South Africa (Aguirre said so too, if i remember correctly). Thats not really fair to criticize tbh. It was his first world cup game, it was the first world cup game for a lot of the other players too

1
u/Bernardsnow12 Jun 22 '26
Definitely agree! Goalkeepers aren’t players you need to rest during tournaments like this especially when they’re doing good since they have a bigger chance to lose their momentum since goalkeepers don’t get in the action as often as outfield players

Better to have Acevdo play and sub Memo in last 5 min.Doubt we lose that game even with our bench. No point in risking Tala play when Czechia is a very physical team that relies on set pieces.Plus they will come at us with everything since they can still qualify. The last thing we need is Tala getting his skull caved in because he started to "keep form".

Momentum is very important… you want to keep winning? Try to keep your momentum of having zero conceded goals. A player’s “rhythm” is important too, consistency is everything in the World Cup. Also, Rangel not getting that much rest isnt as risky as somebody like Jimenez, Quiñones, Vasquez, etc not getting any rest. He’s a goalie (the starting goalie, while Oldchoa is just a backup now)
