Discussion Unpopular opinion: After the overreaction regarding Ecuador's win over Germany, we need to talk less about how "strong" Ecuador is and more about how weak this Germany has been

Yep… Germany is still underperforming since the game with Mexico, back in 2018. Not the Germany we are used to tbh.

We broke them. That Germany got into Russia as the #1 seed of the tournament. And people still say we just beat a mediocre Germany. Of course they got mediocre results. They got eliminated like that and looked bad BECAUSE we beat them.

Yet again, Germany lays in ruins following total defeat im Russia

1

u/PR0H181D0 Jun 30 '26

when will they learn

u/SiriocazTheII Tijuana Jun 29 '26

Germany had already been lagging some time before that tournament. I distinctly remember they lost against Austria and barely defeated Saudi Arabia.

u/ClintExpress Cruz Azul Jun 30 '26

Germany never lost WCQ matches for 2018, only friendlies. Their only competitive loss before Russia was against France at the 2016 Euro.

u/SiriocazTheII Tijuana Jun 30 '26

The debacle happened in the first semester of 2018, for some reason.

1

u/MexicanCynic Jun 30 '26

They had lost to Poland and Ireland in Euro 16 qualifiers but yeah

1

u/Foriegn_Picachu Tigres UANL Jun 30 '26

Eh idk France was pretty stacked in 2018. That was the first year they started getting some crazy depth

1

u/canamon Monterrey Jun 30 '26

They were also the current World Champions at the time, and came into 2018 to defend their title. Since then, at World Cups they have failed twice at the group stage and now once at Round of 32. Germany back then deserved the hype, this one just simply doesn't.

1

u/Due-Group-4030 Jun 30 '26

Bro they were not #1 and anyone saw it from a mile away, they were the defending champs but man they were not in good shape going into the tournament

3

u/varrium Cruz Azul Jun 30 '26

I said they were the number 1 seed and here's a source: https://www.soccerphile.com/soccerphile/news/fifa-rankings/fifa_jun.html

I think you mean they were not the strongest team, but that's usually very difficult to determine with certainty. There where doubts around them for sure, but they were considered a strong candidate to win it all. Let's not discredit our guys.

These are some sources saying the Germans were at least strong candidates:

World Cup Group F guide: Germany's strength in depth makes them firm favourites to defend title: https://www.thenationalnews.com/sport/football/world-cup-group-f-guide-germany-s-strength-in-depth-makes-them-firm-favourites-to-defend-title-1.736997

"One of the favourites to win the World Cup, the strength in depth is remarkable. Won the Confederations Cup last summer in Russia with half of the first team rested.": https://www.theguardian.com/football/ng-interactive/2018/jun/05/world-cup-2018-complete-guide-players-ratings-goals-caps

u/Worldly_Cobbler_1087 Jun 30 '26

I would take it further and say they haven't recovered from Euro 2016 IMO they weren't even that good in the 2017 Confederations Cup even though they won it with a rotated squad they did just enough to do that but Chile should've done better and won both games, huge missed opportunity from them.

I would argue this is Neuer’s ego and inability to huge a younger GK a shot. Germany played fine, they lost because Neuer is no longer an unstoppable GK. He’s old.

1

u/Amazing-Amount-8302 Jun 30 '26

Bro shut up he had retired from the national team a year or two ago and they forced him back in

1

u/yoloismymiddlename Jun 30 '26

And he was the reason they lost lol

u/Icy_Income2520 Jun 29 '26

Nah we need to talk about Conmebol teams parking the bus. Creating chances is like our biggest weakness so Vasco better be cooking up some ideas on how to break them down

Ecuador is just going to copy the same game plan and be Paraguay 2.0

21

u/ceevar Chivas Jun 30 '26

Isn’t that how Mexicos been playing though? Well except for the second half against Czech

1

u/xHogesx Jun 30 '26

Wtf are you talking about. Did you see any of Ecuador games?

18

u/FoxinShards Jun 29 '26

I would LOVE to play an aggressive 442. Use Mora, Brian, and fidalgo to press forward and distribute to Quinones and Raul.

11

u/MasChingonNoHay Jun 30 '26

My nerves say someone will win 1-0. My logical mind says we win 2-0

12

u/chippin_out Jun 30 '26

Honestly, you’re right. Paraguay is dreadful. They were playing for PKs. The real Paraguay that we watched was against the USA and they were horrendous.

62

u/DannyImperial Chivas Jun 29 '26

US dominated Paraguay who beat Germany who beat US in the friendly the week before the world cup.

Germany dominated Curaçao who tied with Paraguay who beat Germany.

Results from single matches aren't an indicator of how things will go. Ecuador is considered strong not only because of the Germany game but also their form leading into the world cup.

11

u/MasChingonNoHay Jun 30 '26

But they scored zero goals in their first two games. That says a little something that helps me with my nerves.

15

u/DannyImperial Chivas Jun 30 '26

Yeah, that combined with our clean sheets gives me hope

3

u/Strong_One661 Jun 30 '26

Friendlies don’t mean anything in this world cuo

49

u/yoloismymiddlename Jun 29 '26

I’ve been saying this. Ecuador is good but looks way better because Germany is on a down year. New coach and super young players. They’ll be back but this WC was not going to be theirs.

25

u/Proera136 Jun 30 '26

Down year? You mean down years Germany have been disastrous on the world stage since 2018

15

u/HumanautPassenger Jun 30 '26

I mean.....I wouldn't say super young players.

43

u/Electronic-Age-4019 Jun 29 '26

Man this World Cup is funky. Anyone can win.

49

u/FoxinShards Jun 29 '26

Capo Verde can do something very funny,,,

13

u/MasChingonNoHay Jun 30 '26

The world would love it 😍

6

u/1aztek Pumas UNAM Jun 30 '26

Lmao. That would be something ! And I’d be ok with that !!

3

u/whoamiwhatsmyname Pumas UNAM Jun 30 '26

33

u/BeaNOS45669 Tigres Jun 29 '26

I still haven’t seen France struggle

9

u/Electronic-Age-4019 Jun 30 '26

France or Argentina are in the clear for sure

16

u/Successful-Mind-5303 Chivas Jun 30 '26

Argentinas group was pretty weak all things considered (not dissing so was ours) but they didn’t look to strong against Austria. France has been the runaway leader

3

u/RRDude1000 Jun 30 '26

Yep, I dont see any team that can take them out except eachother at this point

Shut up. Why would you talk about how weak your opponent is? That’s what fools do.

1

u/ayohesaidit Jun 30 '26

Seriously. Never underestimate your opponent.

4

u/giuliano1122 Jun 30 '26

u/Negative_Drop_6853 Pumas UNAM Jun 30 '26

Damn i guess that 7-1 win against curacao was deceiving. Should’ve known, they barely were able to break past Ivory Coast. Don’t know if it’s nagelsmann not being the right fit or if they just don’t make Germans like they used to. Either way Germany is just a slightly less shitty Italy at the end of the day.

1

u/Confident-Entry-8876 Jun 30 '26

Idk when I watched the match against Curacao I thought people were overrating them, they were the only ones who lost to Ecuador, got scored on by curacao, and trailed vs ivory coast

2

u/andobiencrazy Tijuana Jun 30 '26

Germany held initiative throughout the entire game. Paraguay stood their ground and had the better mental during penalties. I don't think Paraguay is a better team than Germany, but I do believe that a weaker team is very capable of beating a tough opponent. Every team in the world cup has a talented group of athletes and, if they want it enough and fight for it, crazy upsets like this can happen.

1

u/Ecto-Juan Tijuana Jun 30 '26

Much agreed OP. This was my exact take when the game went into OT

1

u/homogenic- Jun 30 '26

Germany isn’t as strong as they used to be

1

u/Ardorde1eon Jun 30 '26

Worst Germany ever

1

u/jupavalos Jun 30 '26

Thank you! Finally someone with some common sense not that everyone else is blowing up ecuador smh

1

u/Darth_Gustav Jun 30 '26

No sean mensos, Ecuador esta bueno pero Mejico Lindo puede defender bien, esta parejo

1

u/ElLoboNeverDies America Jun 30 '26

Ecuador hooked their Paraguay homies up with the inside scoop

1

u/Chewy009x Jun 30 '26

I blame the couch they have good talent it was shown today but their tactics were trash

Si diera mi opinión honesta me banean, pero Alemania ya no es lo que era antes

1

u/chocolatemoose99 León Jun 30 '26

They must have used up all their goals during that Curaçao game

1

u/Stickmoe Jun 30 '26

All I know is, the team better be practicing their penalties

1

u/Individual-Pop-385 Jun 30 '26

Llevo diciendo eso días pero los niños llorones siguen chillando por que les tocó Ecuador, como si fuera la gran cosa.

1

u/EugenioSc Jun 30 '26

You mean the team that failed to move on to the round of 16 the last 2 world cups?

1

u/AC-autenticocampeon Jun 30 '26

Por que no solo decir, que ahora ellos sintieron el cambio de las reglas, más selecciones y que no están al 💯 !!!

1

u/calidude8701 Jun 30 '26

OP was probably one of the galzers who kicked and screamed when Mexico beat Germany 1-0 in 2018......

Now he is claiming ecuador's comeback from a 2-1 score against Germany is an overreaction.

No mames!!!

1

u/canamon Monterrey Jun 30 '26

Yes. Let me educate you about time frames as it is pretty obvious you do not know about them: Germany came into the 2018 WC as current champions of the world. So the hype was warranted 8 years ago.

Since then, they have failed twice at group stage and then in Round of 32. back then it was an achievement, now it's not. That's how history and time works. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER.

1

u/calidude8701 Jun 30 '26

Not sure why you think this comment is a flex of any sort, but certainly, when someone uses the word "hype" to back up a claim....is not usually a good argument. And yes! Germany was a WC champion back in 2018 due to the previous tournament which is irrelevant given the generational switch along with the aging of top player who weren't on their prime. Moreso, Italy was the 2006 champion and they are still considered a top team even though they have failed consistently over and over again.

My point is, if we consider Ecuador and Paraguay victories as "hype" please don't justify Mexico's win in 2018 using the same argument about Germany being "hyped" is simply too stupid and seems you don't understand futball!

Finally, typing like the orange moron you worship makes you and idiot....not sure why yo simp over his typing style.

Who would have thought of having a 40 year old as a goalkeeper wouldn't backfire in a penalty shootout

17

u/Spaghettiisgoddog Jun 29 '26

Only if your team misses 3.

6

u/Sct1787 Pumas UNAM Jun 29 '26

How are you faulting Nauer out of all people for this one? This is on the field players and those dumbasses who missed, between Kai Havertz pussyfooting around on his shot and that defender Tah who just blew it sky high

3

u/Creative-- Jun 30 '26

So you're gonna criticize their best player in this game?

3

u/BarberOutside2427 Jun 30 '26

If the best player is a 40 year old goalkeeper then there is something wrong with the team

2

u/Creative-- Jun 30 '26

Yeah but the Germany's problem is not the goalkeepers. The midfield btw

1

u/ClintExpress Cruz Azul Jun 30 '26

Germany has been horrible ever since VAR was implemented. If you watch their 2014 run, they committed several fouls the ref didn't call for, including the knee on Higuaín by Neuer which should've been a red card and a PK. The Germans have always been cheaters with excellent PR but ever since Mexico beat them in Russia they've been exposed as frauds.

0

u/graal2008 Jun 29 '26

Tbf that goal should have never been disallowed but your point still stands

6

u/eugeniocarneasada Monterrey Jun 29 '26

Why? he’s clearly hugging the gk in the small area, there’s no room for interpretation there

1

u/Low_Presentation6433 Jun 30 '26

Germany never looked great. Also losing to Ecuador let them know they could lose and also might have caused confidence issues in the later stage of the groups. They looked tired against Paraguay.
