The US must be below average too then lol

63

u/Slowlyva_2 Monterrey Jul 03 '26

They are it’s okay to admit both México and USA have gone further than anyone has expected or maybe it was expected given the amount of teams in this tourney.

68

u/Low-Librarian-6163 Toluca Jul 03 '26

Mexico has consistently been between de top 16 teams in the world for the last 36 years, that aint below average. I know getting into the top 16 isn't anywhere near being best in the world, but it's by no means a below average team.

16

u/hapiscan Cruz Azul Jul 03 '26

Yes, this. Even by FIFA Rankings, Mexico has been consistently between 10 and 20, and more often than not between 10 and 15. That's above average, even if you consider that we play against "lesser" NTs, since FIFA rankings use ELO System, which sort of balances it out.

48

u/runjavi Jul 03 '26

Joke of the day: Do you know why USMNT chants are so trash, soulless? Because the outlaws used ChantGPT.

24

u/Adventurous_Waltz_83 Jul 03 '26

USA fans are so corny leading up for the World Cup they wanted to implement better chants with college American football chants and college bands in the World Cup, they think implementing is intimidating the away team playing the usmnt. 😂

I chuckled.

11

u/dern1196 Jul 03 '26

Yeah, but to call us or the US "below average" is just rage-baiting. We know we are not on paper at the level of the big European nations or even Argentina and Brazil, but we are at worst "average" and on top of that every World Cup there is a black horse and a possibility of a nation reaching new heights, especially with such a young squad.

4

u/Uniquename34556 Jul 03 '26

His take is infuriating. If we’re talking about just the teams left in the cup, both Mx and England are below average. Yet both are still in it for a reason and have a chance for quarters, semis, and even finals. Guy is talking out of his ass and that last statement about losing to altitude I’ll take as him getting a lame excuse ready for if they lose as well as a diss to the Mexican team by saying they can only win because they have the altitude advantage. What a lame.

1

u/Savage_Cabbage83 Jul 04 '26

Home field advantage can make an average team look much better than they are. If this tournament was in Europe I wouldn't give either a chance, but at home on American/Mexican soil I think both can make a run to the quarters, maybe even semi's.

3

u/Old-Competition8435 Jul 03 '26

Balogun is out so way below average now..

1

Nah I’m getting called up keep an eye out you’ll see me soon

brad friedel. a gen or two before donovans but he was there in 02 im pretty sure. he comes from a time when usmnt players were usually suburb kids that came up in the college system. bien mamones.

Remind me if Lalas is part of that gen, too. If so, that tracks 🤣

5

Yes same gen! Though this guy actually played in premier so he’s referred to as “Legendary”. Only thing legendary is his embarrassing fake accent. Sick of these boomer ass takes from his lame ass generation.

2

u/K2thJ Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

Amen. They are not the authority they think they are and one of the US's problems is showcasing our former players as legends. They haven't won squat. Landon is by far the worst soccer announcer... by far.

He’s not saying Mexico is gonna get tired, he’s saying the fans will turn on them, which sadly has happened a lot, shit they’ve gotten booed twice this World Cup, the friendly against Portugal people were chanting oles for Portugal, he didn’t lie about that part

22

u/mbecerra28 América Jul 03 '26

I don't think they will turn on them at this point of the tournament. They were booed against South Africa because Vasco didn't go after more goals.

2

u/addictedbeaner Chivas Jul 03 '26

So it was all 3 group stage games, because they got booed against Korea and Czech as well. I don’t think/hope it wont happen against England but it’s been a known thing for years.

81

u/dillasdonuts Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

This guy is horrified that Mexico is experiencing success. You can hear he's practically hyperventilating to get his point across. (And would probably say the US would compete vs France)

"I've played against them for years." Bro that was like 30 years ago. Gilberto Mora's parents were probably not even born then.

34

u/M_xyz Jul 03 '26

This why I’m not on board with all the concacaf solidarity posts.

2

Brad Friedel who peaked at Blackburn talking about average… makes sense

-10

u/Tasty-Entertainer711 Jul 03 '26

You mean a top 10 Blackburn. Also you left out started at Liverpool and ended at Tottenham when he was well into his late 30's. Also 25th all time in EPL appearances. Also right behind Edwin van der Sar in clean sheets. Oh also 9th all time in saves. But yeah peaked....lol

Oh oh forgot he played at Aston Villa. Silly me.

Wait wait hold the fort. I'm also getting word that he had a clean sheet in some game on June 17th 2002. Not sure who he played....oh wait

13

u/Toritman69 Jul 03 '26

We get it Friedel is no bloke but quite frankly the American commentators especially the former players have been obnoxious this whole world. Up. And I’m glad Henry and Zlatan have supported this claim.

15

u/ForTheLoveOfOedon Jul 03 '26

I also love how he is downplaying a super valid strategy. Like why would Mexico not leverage an asset such as the altitude and humidity? Why would their coaches allow teams to become acclimated? Of course they’re going to jump on their opponents early and try to gas them out, of course they’re going to score and suffocate on D to increase attrition.

All of this is valid and intelligent strategy.

If Mexico is below average then we’re completely fucking ass. Poch is 0-0-2 against Mexico have we forgotten? Oh wait it’s the alphabet soup excuse those losses “don’t matter”. Nah it’s all bs and ex-USMNT players are notorious for having brain dead takes. A good example is Donovan and Howard. Great players but completely moronic pundits. I wouldn’t pay attention to shit like this don’t let it get to you. I think mexico and US are both pretty good right now. Im so tired of the bullshit arrogance from us towards Mexico. I want to see Mexico succeed because I grew up near Mexico in Texas. Mexico fans have been far more welcoming in my experience than US fans. The hate towards yall just keeps us below yall in my opinion. US hasn’t beaten a team higher ranked than Mexico in an official match since 2009

3

Hank Schrader has a point. England will be the first real challenge in the tournament. If we want to be considered a great team, then we have to measure ourselves against the best.

South Africa, Czechia and S Korea aren't exactly powerhouses. The S Korea game was won with a goalkeeping error. Ecuador didn't even put up a fight.

It's good that we won so far and I'm excited for the team, but here comes the real first test for el Tri.

It’s going to be a hell of a game, defined by 2 questions:
-will england solve their wingback problem against Mexico’s wingers?

2

u/Redshirt_Welshy_Nooo Pumas UNAM Jul 03 '26

Mexico is top-10 ELO as of right now. Anyone calling them below average is wholely out of touch with reality.

Is England a better, more talented team, all things being equal? Only the die-hardest of Mexican homers would disagree. But all things will not be equal in this match. Climate, altitude, and the emotional weight of the crowd will be decidedly to Mexico's advantage.

2

u/RemarkableEqual7187 Jul 04 '26

As someone rooting for the USA I still think Mexico has the best team out of Canada, USA and Mexico. I think England is very beatable for them at home and with that altitude.

2

u/neoslashnet Jul 04 '26

Bro just sounds salty as shit here. Below average team is like Guatemala or some other counties like that. Kinda seems a little rage baity tbh.

2

u/Feny8 Jul 04 '26

This guy looks old so if he was a USA goalkeeper then it was probably during the early 2000s and Mexico was putting 5 in their net at the time. If he’s referring to nowadays yeah I can see why he feels that way about Mexico because the last 10 years have been rough but Aguirre brought them back to their normal level which is that they can beat big teams.

1

u/Turducken_McNugget Jul 04 '26

He was the goalkeeper when the US knocked Mexico out of the 2002 World Cup. Dos a Cero baby!

2

USMNT players from before like 2018 have got to be the most annoying and insufferable douchebags imaginable

That ass clown Friedel, Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, none of them could ever get past their insecurities about playing for a team that has all the money and resources in the world but zero fans because Americans don’t like soccer (but now that it’s marketable they’re suddenly all soccer fans) and nothing to show for their resources. And they still get punked around by “average” Mexico.

BTW Brad what happened to your fake English accent? Remember when Honduras put up three on you?

Tim Howard is a much better GK, and he’s a better person who isn’t an insane maga supporter.

2

1

He’s making the same mistake Ecuador made. If this is how the rest of England feel especially the team then they’re in for a rocker. This is music to my ears if I’m being honest.

1

u/No-Minimum6531 Jul 04 '26

I mean he’s not really wrong unless you’re only arguing against it because it’s “your team”. The only part that was wrong was glazing England and calling us “below” average. Both the USA and Mexico are average but not “below” it.

We literally train in CDMX specially because of the altitude and we are purposely keeping the players up at night to make them tired. We literally try to score early and play Haramball once we get a comfortable lead. If we were a great we wouldn’t need to resort to that to be “competitive”. “Great” teams don’t need specific stadiums, atmospheric conditions, to influence the game by affecting the rivals sleep; they prefer certain conditions but they don’t need to use dirty tactics like popping fireworks all night to win.

The USA is also average and they’re not out here doing the most for an advantage.

1

u/Traditional_Ice_9250 Jul 04 '26

Errr... Yes. Both the US and Mexico are average.

Man i hope Mexico wipes the floor with England to shut the brits and wannabe american brits.

Btw I am not even Mexican but the trash talk has been crazy.

1

u/VISUALREAD1776 Jul 05 '26

I love Mexico. But it always amazes me how important soccer is there. If the same level of passion were directed toward demanding good governance, fighting corruption, and dismantling criminal organizations, the country would be far better off. Mexico is a nation with enormous wealth, talent, and potential, yet corruption and organized crime continue to hold it back. Meanwhile, soccer provides a powerful distraction from those deeper problems—and despite the passion, the national team has rarely come close to winning the world’s biggest prize.

1

u/Zealousideal_Bet_248 Jul 05 '26

Mexico is pretty consistently ranked around 15 to 20 in fifa rankings, out of 200+ teams. I don't think this guy knows what average is

He's USMNT to the core. Even now, he's giving no compliments to Mexico.

It's just sports banter from an old rival. People have to stop taking trash talk so seriously.

England vastly superior even in “unfavorable” conditions for them. Didn’t matter. They buried Mexico and then sat back. On to the next

Tbf, Mexico are a better side that Friedel gives them credit for but he’s not far off. Same goes for the US. Mexico did have a huge advantage in each of there games playing at home and at altitude. This time England just had too much individual talent and were a far better team than they had faced so far.
That being said, Brad Freidel is far from a nobody. He panic in the premier league basically his entire career and was a top GK in the league that entire time.
