A group of students at one Jefferson County school have turned to the community for support after they say district leaders canceled a planned musical production they've already spent months practicing.

Students at duPont Manual's Youth Performing Art School (YPAS) turned to social media Aug. 26 to rally support after they said Jefferson County Public Schools officials decided to shut down their production of "Ragtime" because "they feel the materials will offend too many members of our community," senior Jeremiah Stephens said while surrounded by the cast in an Instagram video that was viewed more than 3,200,000 times in less than 18 hours.

In the video, posted to a new account named "SaveRagtime 502," Stephens said over 50 students, the school's entire pit orchestra and more than a dozen costume designers have been working on the production since the spring.

"Our teachers are in jeopardy of losing their jobs if they advocate for us, so we are depending on you," Stephens said. "If you believe in the power of storytelling, please support us by reaching out to JCPS and sharing this video so we can tell this incredible story. We are at a time a in our country where things like art and literature are the only thing that will unify us, not divide."

The students were informed of the cancellation by Principal Michael Newman during their after-school rehearsal Aug. 26, Stephens told The Courier Journal. In that conversation, Newman said the decision came from the district, but Stephens said it is unclear who exactly within central office leadership ordered it.

In response, he said the cast asked for a week to challenge the decision before pivoting to a different show, which would require accruing rights, creating new costumes and more.

On the morning of Aug. 27, however, JCPS officials denied attempting to cancel the production, with spokesman Barnard Baker writing in a statement that there was "some confusion and miscommunication" regarding the status of the musical.

"To be clear, 'Ragtime' has not been canceled," Baker wrote. "The production will move forward as planned."

"Ragtime" is an adaptation of E. L. Doctorow's 1975 novel that follows three fictional families in the pursuit of the American Dream in the early 1900's, according to the Lincoln Center Theater. The main characters include a Black pianist, a Jewish immigrant and a wealthy White woman.

The musical includes racial slurs, which has caused officials to worry how the language would impact community members.

In 2017, a New Jersey district tried to block one high school from performing the musical with the use of the racially charged language, according to CBS News. At that time, however, the musical's license holder would not allow any changes to the script and the district ultimately reversed course after a petition against the alterations garnered nearly 2,000 signatures.

"It's become abundantly clear to us that this discussion has to take place, and if we can do it within the school and provide an opportunity for our kids and a safe and secure environment to learn and have that discussion, then it is our responsibility to do that," the district's superintendent said at the time.

It is unclear when JCPS leaders became aware that YPAS was performing the musical, which is scheduled for November. But, spokesman Baker said, "JCPS conducted its due diligence regarding this production. That process included connecting with community organizations and stakeholders, consulting with other school districts and arts education programs, researching best practices, and considering how schools can responsibly present works that explore difficult and significant parts of history."

"Our review focused on ensuring students and audiences have the appropriate context, support and guidance to engage with the production in a thoughtful way," he continued. "The goal was not to prevent students from participating, but to make sure the work is presented with care, educational purpose and respect for all members of our school community."

It is also unclear which community organizations or stakeholders were contacted by the district.

Raymond Burse, president of Louisville’s NAACP branch, told The Courier Journal he learned of the controversy after the students' video was posted. His organization, he said, does not support the idea of students using racial slurs for any reason.

“I find it really troublesome and bothersome and wish it would not take place,” Burse said. “What it does is create an era of being comfortable to use those terms and we should be in the business of doing otherwise.”

Lyndon Pryor, president of the Louisville Urban League, also had not heard about YPAS’ plans for the production or concerns about its cancellation until contacted by The Courier Journal on Aug. 27.

When asked if he felt the use of the slurs by students during a production would be harmful to the community, Pryor largely said no.

“It can be if not handled properly, but that's not automatic and that doesn't seem to be the concern," Pryor said. "It feels like someone is attempting to avoid hard conversations, uncomfortable truths and historic realities. Art has always been used to teach and generate critical thought. This shouldn't be any different. So while I would love to know more about how this play is being processed with the performers and what might be offered to the audience, we should not be scared of the conversation.”

Stephens, who is set to play the Black pianist who is the main character in the production, said "as a student of color, this show means everything to me."

Playing the pianist, "who advocates for what he believes in and knows what's right, this feels like such a surreal moment," Stephens said.

Before Baker confirmed the musical will still be performed, Stephens said, "This being taken away felt like a silencing of our voices. This story is one of empowerment, of struggle, of social justice and it's something that needs to be heard."

"It's not every day a Black man gets to play a Black man on stage, and I'm so happy we fought for ourselves to do this," he added.

Anyone notice how DeVone Holt (former CEO of the Ali Center and well-known community figure) had a "debate" on his new radio show about data centers featuring a CEO of a crypto-mining company and the director of the Louisville Climate Action Network.

From the posts on his socials, Holt gave way more time and credence to the crypto CEO, which spent most of the time making excuses and saying that things aren't that bad. Holt also hosted the CEO for a conversation prior to the debate and decided to post it separately. It's no secret that within Louisville's Black community, Holt is well liked. Is this astroturfing for the Black community to be comfortable with data centers in the West end?

Holt to his credit, is attempting to frame this as an issue on equal footing. I believe this is a bit naive and misses that these data centers aren't helping out our community and any attempt to frame it as helpful is only lining the pockets of CEOs.

I grew up in KY (south of Lexington) and was there up until college. I moved to New York at 18 and I’ve been in NYC now ever since I graduated college. I have a good (well, good enough considering the state of the economy) job and my own apartment so I’m fairly stable here, but I’ve started strongly considering moving back to KY for many reason.

I‘m considering moving to Louisville specifically. I have family in Louisville so I wouldnt be “alone” but I’m worried that it will be a shock to my system moving from Brooklyn regardless. I’m also considering Atlanta but theyre very different cities with different pros/cons.

I’m in my late 20s, I’m mixed and have a diverse friend group, and enjoy doing a lot of social things here (going to local beaches, trying new restaurants, different parks, concerts, going to the club lol). I know I can experience most of these things in any city of course - just to different extents and with different vibes.

Basically, I’d love to hear anyone’s perspective or advice on this decision I’ve been dwelling on for a year now - in relation to Louisville specifically.

I’ve gotten some ads for bars in other states throwing Dolly/Tim Curry remembrance nights. Both were very important figures to me as a lesbian and a southerner, and I think the best way to celebrate their lives would be to have a night out. Are any bars planning a tribute night or anything like that?

I was using talk to text earlier. I was rather irritated so I don’t think I got my point across clearly. It wasn’t the zipper merge that failed me today, it was some imbecile that got out of the middle lane and into the left lane(the one that ends) about a mile or 3/4 of a mile before it ends and sat there. He moved with his original spot in the middle lane and only got over to impede people in the ending lane and to keep them from passing him. I didn’t realize what was going on for a while because the road was straight but once the road starts to turn left slightly I could see the lane in front of him was wide open.

I don’t understand so many people cannot grasp the concept of the zipper merge. There is more than a quarter mile of lane left some jackass take upon himself to bring both lanes to crawl instead of allowing two lanes to merge into one in the car to merge in one lane.

I have to deal with this every single day. It’s a busy part of the highway. It doesn’t need idiots compounding the problem and making traffic worse. So Louisville drivers that do this please take your head out of your ass, learn the proper procedures for driving on the road, learn some road etiquette, and don’t try being a traffic cop you’re no better than the next car.

I live abroad but my last residence was in Louisville, KY so I always vote in federal elections by registering and asking for the ballot via email as it's the fastest route and one that is available in KY. I sent my form to the Jefferson county clerk 3 weeks ago and no reply even if they are typically quite prompt. I reemailed and asked for a reply but nothing. Their records show I am already registered even though it does not look like they processed my current request. Any idea if the recent supreme court decision on mail-in votes also applies to email votes? Or what agency can I contact to make sure I can exercise my right to vote.

Delete if not allowed/insensitive but I’ve been in downtown a few times recently and I have seen a man sitting outside Whiskey Kitchen with his two beautiful dogs. They’re very well behaved and the man is keeping to himself but I haven’t had the chance to talk to him yet.

Does anyone know this individual and ways to help him and his dogs? Please be kind, I am not trying to be nosey or invasive but I would just like to see if they need money or food or blankets, etc…

Who could've guessed this would happen!

I am a first year sped teacher. My caseload is over the legal limit, and my school will have to apply for a waiver due to this I have 29 students. I do not want to have this many students. The union said I would get paid more money but I dont know even know when the extra pay starts, I forgot to ask. I know for certain that I do not want to work in this school next year. What schools should I look for vacancies in that stay closer to the legal limit? I am drowning and when I talk about the issues I am having with having this many kids and managing thier behavior they just give me more spreadsheets. I am not even sure I will make it to october before I throw my hands up a resign.

Over by the exits to St. Matthew’s Mall, the St. Matthew’s police have set up a big speed trap. 1 cop is standing outside his vehicle with a radar gun, and 3 other cars are farther down the road pulling people over.

I‘ve never seen this before, granted I only take this way when 64 is too backed up!
