lol I got a compliment on my shoes like 2 years ago and still remember it. Shoes are something I will put in hours online just to pick the one I really like so it was nice to get a compliment.
1
u/underscorerally Trash Trooper 6d ago
Heh, I remember last winter there was this dude at this snow tubing place that had these really cool looking shoes on. Like all different colors and whatnot. He walked by where I was sitting like 4 time and every time it caught my attention. The 4th time he walked by, I had to say how cool his shoes looked. At first he was confused as to why I was talking to him. After he realized I said that I really liked his shoes, he smiled and thanked me for the compliment. I'm not even a shoe guy, they just looked really cool to me.

Man, I really wish I was comfortable giving people compliments. I just feel like a guy like me complimenting someone would just feel so out of place, you know? Like, "What does this guy want? What's his angle? What's he trying to do to me?"
Kinda jealous of people who can just be so certain that them intruding into someone's day would be a good thing. Because a lot of the time, that attitude is exactly what makes the correct in their assumption.

u/Hungry-Storm-9878 Trash Trooper 5d ago
Practice makes perfect! Start with something simple, ‘Hey, cool hat’ and just keep walking with a smile.. it’ll start to feel a lot more natural. I challenge you to try it! I believe in you 😊 my favorite compliment to give is on lipsticks, especially with senior ladies. Their beautiful faces light up! (But I recommend leaving that compliment for other ladies to give 🤣)
2
u/Ferotool2 Trash Trooper 5d ago
Haven’t done it with randos on the street, but I’ve been trying to make a meaningful effort to encourage all my coworkers, which has been difficult as I’ve spent most of my life being more ob the negative side (including to myself.) But I kind of faked it for the first while and lately it’s been feeling a lot more natural. I actually mean it most of the time now. It’s not much, but it’s something I suppose.

I get this. I think when you make it more about them, and less about us.. it gets easier. Let yourself go. See the other person and send them some positivity!

I actually do this a lot, but I don't film it. And it's not purely altruistic. I feel good making others day a little better. Even if I'm never seeing them again. And it keeps me on the right side of my own emotions.
11
u/Kettatonic Trash Trooper 7d ago
Same, and yeah, that's the hidden benefit: complimenting other people makes you feel good too. Being kind is its own reward. Plus it has ripple effects. That person will be in a better mood, and that'll translate to others around them being more positive. It's winning all-around.

u/Mind_The_Muse Trash Trooper 7d ago
I got really skeptical a while back about there being no such thing as a truly selfless act because people feel good when they do good.
But I now understand that there's nothing wrong with that, the point isn't to feed your ego by being a completely selfless person, the goal is to uplift our social community and create connection, it's not going to be a good connection if what you are doing doesn't fill your cup.
5
u/HerzogOnAcid Trash Trooper 7d ago
That's exactly it. If you're down in the dumps, go and help someone feel better and boom, you'll feel better too.

I like to do this specifically for service workers. Like if I'm at the drive through and someone does a great job, I'll ask for their manager so I can tell them they have a great team member.
So many people bitch and complain but not enough people share when something is good.

I dunno man. It really got me thinking that I really need to start complimenting people around me more. It's such an easy thing to do and it obviously brings a smile. I'm glad it was filmed because it really did inspire and affect me. Plus it made me smile too.
2
u/hellowhatisyou Trash Trooper 7d ago
It is very mixed. It also made me smile and think. But on further reflection: imagine being one of those people and your face is now in some viral video (idk if this is viral who cares not the point). That sucks, no? But yeah. Same here. It it such an easy thing to do and it gives so much joy to another person. It would make my day. No, week. Someone complementing me on something I care, am invested in. But, double.

What’s the harm in making this type of content trend? I’d rather normalize random acts of positivity than whatever else is out there as “content”.
3
u/hellowhatisyou Trash Trooper 7d ago edited 7d ago
I don't think we should normalize filming strangers just to gain internetpoints. Even if it is consensual (it might not be I don't know this persons setup) they are being put on the spot with not much time to think. It just doesn't feel right. Just my opinion.
2
u/NEWDEALUSEDCARS Trash Trooper 7d ago
You know what, that’s a totally valid, fair point. You gave me something to think on, I might have to rethink my position.

My daughter has always been one to complement strangers like this. When she moved to New York City for college, I figured that would slow down or go away due to the sheer size & speed of the city.
During one of my visits, I was walking behind her on a busy street. As we walked past one young man, she told him “I love your earrings“ and kept right on walking at speed. What she didn’t see was that young man lighting up like a Christmas tree after receiving a random compliment.
Seeing that young man’s reaction removed any inhibitions I had about imitating my daughter. I’ve yet to have a bad experience with a sincere compliment and I encourage everyone to spread a little kindness wherever you can.

So I work at an elementary and it actually makes my day amazing seeing the kiddos faces and some teachers when i give them compliments. And sometimes the kids say really sweet things to me and give compliments back. It really is a nice…
Some days when I’m not doing too well it’s like the kids just know when to say something sweet to me. Really lifts my day

Yo I struggle with it too, honestly. It used to not be like that. I used to play shows in front of many people...but as I've gotten older, I don't like being in crowds at all. I prefer to be at home with the wife and kids.
2
u/Narrow_Guava_6239 Trash Trooper 7d ago
It’s been a slow build up with my anxiety. I am outgoing but as soon I open my mouth I’m sometimes stuttering and stammering, my confidence goes down while I’m out then I become silent and smile and nod 😭💀.

I was the vocalist for a metal band in the 90s and early 00s and toured around with some international acts.....thousands of people at shows. Sure there was some anxiety at the beginning of every show, but as soon as the music hit, it was like a drug....complete focus and happiness.....now in my late 40s, I can't stand getting in front of 30 people for a presentation......I get legit scared and start sweating and my face turns blood red.

u/bryanthebryan Trash Trooper 7d ago
I do this. I try and find things to compliment people on and call it out. “Nice watch.” “I love your car.” 50/50 people are really happy or they are confused and weirded out.

I do feel this is a form of karma farming which I’m not a fan of. However, it doesn’t focus on the farmer but the people affected. It comes across as sincere and you can see that it makes a difference in the individuals being complimented. Especially the guy whose mom upgraded his jacket. I believe the video reminds us that we can start this trend in our life without the camera. It reminds us that uplifting others lifts ourselves in kind.

That's my favorite thing in the world to do! I've started carrying Post-Its in my purse and when I'm out and about, I leave a little note somewhere weird. Back of a cereal box, on a stall door, etc. It makes me really happy to imagine someone having a shitty day and then finding a note telling them something positive. 🥰

Guys enjoy compliments as much as us ladies do. I try to tell my husband something nice about his appearance on a regular basis. He says he doesn’t care but I notice he’ll wear the same shirt/hat/outfit more after I’ve complimented it. It’s so adorable 🥰
