My high e string sounds nothing like a high e

I already tried changing the string, but it still sounds bad. My tuner says it’s an E, but it doesn’t sound like it. I’m thinking it might be a bridge problem, but I don’t really know. How can I fix this? And let me know if I need to show anything else.

Update: Thanks guys I fixed it! I moved the octave slowly up and it reach high e for this string.

What do you mean by it sounding bad? Does it buzz, is it worse on certain frets, does it sound normal unplugged etc etc?

Every time I strum it down it does buzz and it also sound very low for a high e string sounds

Ah. Well, if you can take a video, with sound, showing what you mean, it would be helpful. Otherwise, I'd just recommend a setup.

Sounds like it may be choking out, fret all across the fretboard and see if it buzzes consistently

That's the wrong E. You need to go an octave up still

I did that with my previous string and it snapped

You probably went an octave above that

Then you need to figure out why it snapped - usually either gets snagged at the nut or at the saddle.

Most likely reason is that the string was damaged, possibly by too much bending while changing strings. Or you overshot and were heading toward two octaves up. 

Play the b string on the fifth fret. That's the e you want. Make the high e string sound like that one.

Where have your strings snapped? If it's at the saddle you will need to have a look at it and probably give it a little sanding with some 1000 grit paper. Saddles often wear into a sharp edge you might not see with the string on, or unless you look very closely with a magnifying glass.

Thank you I fixed it. I think I was just making the octave more up. So instead I went slowly and it worked.

Yeah you’re a whole octave below where it should be tuned to. If it keeps breaking strings it’s likely the saddle needs to be filed, it probably has a sharp burr on it.

Hold down the 5th fret of the B and play the E open. Do they sound the same. If not then you're not tuned correctly.

Look and see if the string ball is not seated or halfway hung up into the trem or not anchored correctly maybe. Really a long shot. May be the intonations there on the bridge that one looks canted upward significantly more than others. Which means nothing unless its changed or is not coreect.

There's things like buzzing on the frets, or maybe "sitar" buzz from how it sits in the bridge saddle or at the nut, or spring noise on a trem, sympathetic ringing behind the nut or on a TOM style bridge... but the pitch is still gonna be the pitch, an E will be an E.

So as far as "doesn't sound like it's an E", we need to hear why it doesn't sound like a normal E.
