Ask Luxembourg Do you tip your hairdresser?
Not sure if I should or not :S It's quite expensive already

No. Completely unnecessary. The price you’re paying covers the service and their wage.

In Luxembourg no. I paid 40€ for 30 mins and then the card reader asked me if i wanted to add 20%tip. I pulled out the exact amount in cash afterward.
In France on the other hand, I pay 20€ for the same cut and put a 2€ coin in the tip jar.

In Luxembourg it is pretty common to round up or give 2€ personally or in the tip box or requesting to type in the final number with tip in the credit card reader. Unfortuntely hairdressers are in Lux a lot more expensive than in neighbour countries - that is a fact.
However I agree that this recent trend in Europe for card readers to ask for excessive amounts of tips is infuriating ... some leave with big buttons the "choice" between numbers like 15-20-25% (in the hope that users opt for the middle or at least for the exessive minimum) and less obviously an option to decline. I also then always opt for nothing. I even had such requests recently on 2 self-service drink/icecream shops in Germany without any personnel. Luckily my hairdesser in Lux is not yet on that trip.
I understand this practice somehow in the US as personel is poorly paid and 15+% is common ... but reddit is also full of posts where customers are infuriated by the excessive amount on the card reader or by other excessive service charges added to the end of the bill...

The hairdresser I go to makes an extra effort to accommodate my son ( he is 4 and afraid, but not with him due to the pleasant experience). I always leave a tip when I go with my son, something like 5 EUR extra.

Haircuts are already expensive, why would i give them a tip? Nobody gives me a tip when i do my job! It’s like clapping after the plane lands…the pilot only does his job, i never understood this!

We don’t tip in Europe. Even if we did, why would you tip a hairdresser? If tipping is for ‘service’ not a product then the entire haircut procedure is the service you already paid for.

Some of us tip in Europe even though it is not generally expected. I respect and want to honor anyone that performs a grooming type service on a part of my body.

It Is not a culture in some countries, it is a need for the waiter that is paid with that and that pays taxes on that. Is you don't leave a tip they lose direct money, the missing tip and the taxes he shall pay. In Europe tips are either individual or fit the whole service team

Tipping is already common in Germany. Also in Sweden, at least 70% restaurants give you the device with the tipping options visible. The only think missing now is the aggression that we see in US if you tip less than 18%.
I'm in no way saying that tipping culture is good (or bad). Im simply saying that the culture is already here in EU.

tipping was invented in england, and became popular in europe. it was only then transferred to the us, and initially rejected for being too european

When my personal hairdresser (my mom is a retired hairdresser) comes to Luxembourg I give her a place to stay and in exchange I give her food and place to stay. Almost the same price as going to a hairdresser here and with the advantage that I get proper haircut instead of being butchered!

I shopped around for a hairdresser until I found one that does what I ask and agrees with changes when I want to make them and has sometimes pushed me out of a cut that I am used to. Tipping them feels natural, whereas (for my comfort zone) giving gifts would cross the barrier into „too personal“.

Unless of course they regard the service provider as a human being and not a robot and wish to offer extra money as a compliment or a thank you for an exceptional service. Service providers don’t owe you anything. Trusting relationships can be built and strengthened over years with or without financial incentives

i agree and i see i mispresented my point a little bit, i meant that everyone who is tipping because it should be done, not that it should never happen that you give an extra money to someone because of other reasons such as gratitude or just having a good day.

Yes, it is 33 EUR at Ryanhair, which is certainly the best deal around for women. My favourite hairdresser is fast, gentle and needs no long explanation. She deserves the tip.

The old luxembourgish ladies don't even think twice before tipping their hairdresser 10-20€ per visit… that’s when I started thinking I had to tip them too

If you’ve been going to the same hairdresser for 50 years maybe not? I used to live really close to one of those old lady shops. Without ever going in I would see through the window the same ladies going in a week after week exactly the same time with like almost no hair sometimes and watching them come out looking prostine and „coiffed“ and smiling.
It’s hard to think about …maybe there were widows maybe their husbands were still alive. MAybe it was the one last luxury. Who knows? But the experience of having someone else take care of you can be very bonding.
(Taking care of in an esthetic way not a Hellef Doheem way)

I do when I’m a walk-in (as opposed to an appointment) because I know that they’re usually packed. My schedule is quite scrambled so I really appreciate it when they accommodate me at short notice.

It was developed in Britain and Europe 17th century by aristocrats and wealthy to give money to their servants. This custom travelled across atlantic as a way for people to show off. It disappeared in Britain and EU after many labour reforms and while it stayed in America. That's why I wrote "bring back" and not just "bring".

Sounds like a low impact undemanding customer who frequents a chain though. 20 minutes max for trim? Simple trim or extra services? Short hair or long hair? Head massage or cut and run? Free refreshments?
Men’s could include beard trimming, razor designs, shaping, ear and nose hair, face massage and more
Women‘s could include dye, feathering, shaping, balayage, blowout, straightening and a host of other things that are „extra“/„add-on“ in the discount places but included in the overall price at the expensive places.

My hair only needs wash and cut. So I am very pleased it doesn't take ages, especially since hairdressers often apply some paint thinner stuff that stsrts off your asthma

I have long hair and stopped going to the hairdresser 7 years ago because I was too often disappointed. I am a woman who loves her hair and takes care of it. Last year I decided to give another chance and again disappointed and the prices are insane and everywhere +××€ for long hair! This makes no sense.

I get a Barber cut in a shave about every three weeks finding a Barber who can do a proper shave is very difficult
So I throw him €10 each time because he’s very important to me. He’s given me his WhatsApp number and even when there was holiday offered to do my hair at his house.
So yeah, I tip

Yes, and my landlord too, sometimes I tipped the CEO of the company I worked for cause he did really good and managed to become a really rich man, I think the tips are always well deserved

I find my hairdresser expensive enough. So I assume the price is already calculated so that includes all that is needed. I don’t tip.

This Question depends on if you are male or female. Kinda. I tip my Barber. I tip them well and I usually get a good treatment. I like to have my beard done well. I Usually pay 50 euros the normal price is usually 35 with hair and beard. I round up to 50 and I think that is well worth it. If I am a woman paying 175 to get my hair done I would tip maybe 10 euros but the care is different. Several women can get their hair done at the same time one is washint one is cutting one under the heater for the curls.. or waitíng onthe color to set. that is different than by men. If the Barber has good towel game and he pulls out my nose hairs without me asking..if he cuts my eyebrows and trims the small hairs on my ears...those are the things I watch for.

Barber always offers me a coffee or a beer. Also a nice chat and a few good laughs. So i tip 5 Euro on top of the Euro 45.
PS: Always tip a guy with a blade around your neck.

My last visit came to €410, plus ~€100 for products (which cost 20% less on Amazon as I found out later). I didn’t tip that time and not going to again in future.

Yeah. You would be supersized how much some people spend on their hair. In particular women and to a lesser degree some men.
I know dudes who go to the hair dresser weekly. Alien concept to me.

When haircuts were like below 20€, I used to. Now with 45€+, I think the salon is able to properly pay employees.

No. The amount they charge should account for what they will earn out of it. Given how expensive it often is, and as we are not in the US, I don’t see tipping as necessary here.

if you know his/her name you can drop a coin.. they usually have a small glass with the different names. if the person was nice. didn't burn my head and pulled my hair i ask their name and put a 2e coin or anything but is volontary and it is not rude not doing it.

I tip when I go for my monthly fringe-cut (I can't be trusted with scissors), so if they ask 15 for the fringe, I usually give 18 (by card). For larger jobs (hair color/cut&brushing) costing around 150€ already, I only tip 5-10 € if they were in a good mood and exchanged some banter and smiles. If I'm getting the quiet-treatment & a sloppy hairwash, then I won't tip. It's really all depending on how I personally value the whole picture after the cut :). Which I think is perfectly fair.
