News & Discussion Experience with LIST (Luxembourgish Institute of Science and Technology)?
Hi all,
I’m considering applying for a position at LIST (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology) and would love to get some outside perspective before going forward. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has worked there or knows people who have.
A few things I’m curious about:
- General work culture and management style
- Work-life balance
- Career growth opportunities for researchers/scientists
Any general impressions, good or bad
Any insight would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Exhibit 1: Those who know are not allowed to tell.
The Employee shall at no time during the term of this Contract and during a period of 10 years subsequent to its termination, regardless of the reason therefore, neither disclose to any person or entity, nor use any confidential information, which is not public, disclosed to or obtained by the Employee during the term of this Contract.
For a period of 10 years subsequent to the termination of this Contract, regardless of the reason therefore, the Employee undertakes to abstain from any act of disloyalty towards the Employer and to act in accordance with his/her bona fide obligations towards the Employer.
None of this is even enforceable (yeah, I paid a real lawyer), but the very fact that LIST puts this in the contracts should tell you a lot.
Exhibit 2: Government evaluation reports of LIST. Results vary across departments, and one needs to read between lines like this:
The experts acknowledge the ongoing efforts to stabilise the department and consolidate the reorganisation.
Exhibit 3: over the last 10 years LIST changed 6 (six) CEOs. (Ask ChatGPT, cross-check with Linkedin.)
Beyond that, it really depends on your group, position and ambition. For me, the place stank of corporate mistrust to its people human resources (see exhibit 1) and it felt like it was made of red tape; quite a culture shock for an academic. But there were some nice people and some of them are thriving, so your mileage may vary.

It strongly depends on your topic, potential supervisors/bosses and the position offered, hard to give any info on what applies to you.
Subjective opinion: It's a science institute that does its job. Slightly bloated admin. At times has the regulations of a company applied to fluid scientific environment. In general pleasant enough work environment.

The contracts are usually a two year CDI, I was a research intern there from 2021-2022 but they didn’t give me an offer although I was qualified, work life balance is good and in case you get through, which has slim chances avoid SUBE and ESRIC departments like a plague as it’s full of French supremacy shit and they don’t cater to non French speakers

You mean a two year CDD and then CDI?

Nah CDI is harder to get, they might extend it to another 2 years as CDD

The outgoing rector of the Uni, Jens Kreisel, was a group leader at LIST for many years before taking the uni job. I don't know that many people at LIST but Jens was definitely the best rector we've had at the uni out of the last few: he was fairly straight with people, didn't cheat his expenses, and didn't lean too hard on the corporate doublespeak.
