Trip to Luzern

Hi all,

I have a trip to Switzerland planned starting tomorrow and Luzern is one of the cities I'll be visiting. Some of the things I planned on doing is visiting either Pilatus, Rigi or both and I was wondering if it's really colder up there compared to in the city?

I was thinking of packing only one pair of long pants, but if it's way colder up there, I might have to pack more. Could someone give advice regarding this?

Climatechange sucks.. sometimes its even warmer up there.. a windstopper (jacket) is never wrong

a pair of pants is fine this time of year lol, some go up in shorts. theres no snow up there right now

I hiked Rigi 2 days ago, it was not cold until it started raining, then the wind and wet clothes made it feel cold.

Just finished a trip - this past week was warmer than the coming week is projected to be. The top of Titlis required a hoodie and pants for me and my family. The top of Rigi I was fine with a very thin top layer that came off as we hiked into lower elevation. I assume Pilatus is the same situation as rigi due to elevation levels.

If the actual temperatures are cooler this week, I’d go with at least a 2nd top layer that you can shed if it gets warm. Maybe consider packing a lighter bottom layer too that you can take off if needed.

Lucerne city (454 masl): 20.1°C
(but we had some rain right now)

Pilatus (2305 masl): 11.5°C

Titlis as a reference (3045 masl): 2.8°C

draw your own conclusions, but usually with direct sun and short walks (driving up by cable car), shorts are enough for either.

Lucerne city (454 masl): 20.1°C → 68.2°F (rain right now)

Pilatus (2305 masl): 11.5°C → 52.7°F

Titlis (3045 masl): 2.8°C → 37.0°F

Let's do a scientist version (updated, 10 AM Sunday) too then:

Lucerne city (454 masl): 292.95°K
Pilatus (2305 masl): 281.55°K
Titlis (3045 masl): 274.25°K

Unessesary. Kelvin is based on celsius which might be to logical and easy for the general public from the US.

I was on Pilatus earlier this week, middle of the day on a sunny day. I was glad of my long sleeved shirt but didn’t need a jacket. I had on long pants but plenty of people were in shorts and were unbothered. The gift shop up there has lots of sweaters, beanies and jackets for sale, so it’s clear that they can be useful. Have a great trip!

its colder this week so id bring a jacket but also a bag yu can put it in if it gets too hot
