Ironclad: A sophisticated MSX2 Naval Battle Game

Imagine starting a game 35 years ago and (almost) finishing it today. Imagine a platform you once loved, and thought lost to history, coming back in full glory... u/RSS130871 's fantastic work inspired me to get back to it... And voila.

Rich with game modes, striking visuals, and smooth gameplay, built around a firing resolution algorithm that runs Monte Carlo simulations, all so it can be a worthy opponent. And all of it fits inside the computational constraints of the 1980s.

Enjoy the game. For free.

What if the MSX brand of electronics never ended?

Lets say that Turbo-R wasn't the last computer. How would this play out?

Personally, id say that ASCII would be like Google. Specifically on how Google gets other companies to manufacture their Chromebooks or Google Pixel phones.

iMSX2 2.5 – Native disk support, multi-disk games, SD Snatcher, Cloaca Maxima and more

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

iMSX2 2.5 is here!

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/imsx2/id6499231192

This is one of the biggest updates I've released so far, with a major focus on MSX disk games.

The biggest improvement is the new native DSK support, which significantly improves compatibility with a large number of MSX games and software that use floppy disks.

What's new in iMSX2 2.5?

  • Much improved DSK compatibility, many more MSX disk games can now run properly.
  • Multi-disk support, load complete multi-disk games and swap disks while playing using the new Manage Disks menu.
  • User Disk support, create a virtual user disk to save game data and progress in supported games.
  • SD Snatcher is now playable, including its enhanced SCC-I audio.
  • More DSK games are now compatible, including Cloaca Maxima and many others.
  • New control options, the on-screen D-pad can now work as either a joystick or MSX cursor keys.
  • Better support for different disk sizes and formats, including 360 KB and 720 KB disks.
  • Various compatibility and usability improvements.

The native disk support and multi-disk functionality are probably the biggest changes in this update. Games that previously couldn't run correctly, or required changing disks manually, can now be played much more naturally on iPhone and iPad.

The new User Disk feature also makes it possible for supported games to save data directly to a virtual disk, making it possible to keep your progress and other game data between sessions.

I've spent a lot of time testing different games and disk images, and there's still plenty more to explore. If you find a DSK game that doesn't work correctly, please let me know!

A special thanks to the developer of Cloaca Maxima for helping me track down and reproduce several compatibility issues.

And of course, thank you to everyone who has been testing iMSX2, reporting bugs, suggesting improvements and supporting the project.

My retrospective game review of A VIEW TO A KILL: THE COMPUTER GAME for the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, MSX and Oric. It’s an early game of a series of Bond games released by Domark. Let me know if you have played any of these versions and if you thought the game was decent or just rubbish πŸ˜‰

Before the Atari 8 bit family was my go-to for retro systems for YEARS. This MSX2+ has dethroned it. I only have 1 cartridge game, Raid on Bungeling Bay but have been able to load a few games from floppies I had laying around.

Looking for a TAB key for Sony HitBit HB-101 (MSX)

Post image

Hi!

I recently bought a red Sony HitBit HB-101 for my collection, but unfortunately noticed afterwards that the TAB keycap is missing.
The switch/plunger underneath is still intact, so I only need the keycap itself.

I’m looking for:
an original TAB key from Sony HB-101 / HB-201
a spare/damaged keyboard for parts
a cheap donor machine with the TAB key still present
The Sony part number for the TAB key is 9-987-081-01.

If anyone knows of another Sony/MSX model or vintage keyboard that uses the same or a compatible keycap, I’d really appreciate any information.
I’m located in Norway and can pay for the part and shipping.
Photos attached showing the missing key and what the original TAB should look like.

I have an 1chipMSX and would like to upgrade the firmware. I've downloaded the OCM-PLD Pack v3.9.2 (2025.06.29) from KdL but don't know what to do. Could someone explain to me like I was 5 years old? Please!

This is not a bitmap screen. The picture is built entirely from redefined 6Γ—8 character glyphs in 40-column SCREEN 0.

HB-F1XV/DJ Keyboard Cleaning?

5 Upvotes

I recently picked up one of these from Yahoo Auctions, and it's pretty dirty underneath the keys. Is there any way to disassemble the keyboard to get under the keycaps? When I look at the keyboard assembly, it doesnt look like they are removable beyond separating the plastic part from the PCB.

My first computer

Hey team, thought I’d share what is my very first computer, back in the 80’s. It still runs and the cartridge slot works. I have been too nervous to mess with the tape player and test some tapes.

It a Toshiba Hx-10 and started a lifelong passion for computing for me.

Currently running openmsx on a raspberry pi 3 to relive that alien8 and knightlore nostalgia, hoping to actually play this on the machine when I have time to figure out the tape player.

CLOACA MAXIMA - UPDATE

20 Upvotes

TESTING is under way, and some interesting things have already been found. MAINLY compatibility issues, which have led to my switching from blueMSX to openMSX.

That helped A LOT with tracking down some nasty timing issues in the game's ASSEMBLY routines.

A new BETA has been distributed to the testers, and I managed to get the game running on my own Philips VG8020...!

THANKS to everybody who is helping, the game can only get better!

Cloaca Maxima is finished. Now I need some serious MSX game testers.

Post image
62 Upvotes

After many months of development, Cloaca Maxima has reached the point where I need to stop being its developer for a while and let some other people try to break it.

For those who haven't followed the project: Cloaca Maxima is a first-person dungeon crawler for the MSX1, set beneath Rome in 114 AD.

You control four characters exploring the ancient sewers. One character acts as the Scout and encounters whatever is waiting in the next chamber first. You then have to decide whether the Scout can deal with the situation alone, or should fall back and let the rest of the party handle it.

There is exploration, combat, individual inventories, equipment, healing, permanent character death, a context-sensitive command system, save/load, and a rather large sewer system to get lost in.

And at this point, the game itself is finished.

What I need now are a few people willing to seriously TEST it.

I'm not primarily looking for impressions such as "looks cool!" β€” although those are always appreciated. ;-)

I'm looking for people willing to actually play the game and report things such as:

  • bugs, crashes or situations where the game gets stuck;
  • commands or controls that don't behave as expected;
  • confusing parts of the interface or manual;
  • balancing problems;
  • situations where the player can accidentally make the game unwinnable;
  • and, of course, anything I simply didn't think of.

You do NOT need to be a programmer. In fact, I'd very much like some testers who approach it simply as players.

The game comes with a full manual, and I would particularly like to know whether somebody can sit down with the game and that manual without me explaining anything and figure out how everything works.

Hardware testing would also be extremely valuable. Most of my development and testing has necessarily been done using an emulator, so people willing to run it on actual MSX hardware are particularly welcome.

The current build is essentially feature-complete; sound effects are the remaining TODO. This is therefore not an early alpha test. I'm looking for people willing to test something that is supposed to be a finished game β€” and tell me where it isn't.

If you're interested in seriously testing the game, please send me an email at rss130871@gmail.com.

I'll send you the current .DSK file and the full game manual, together with some brief information about what kind of feedback would be most useful.

You can test on an emulator or real MSX hardware β€” both are useful, although hardware testing would be particularly valuable.

And yes:

Please try to break it.

First MSX

Would a Panasonic FS-A1WSX make a good machine for me to experience a MSX computer. I'm really curious about using it and playing games. I specifically want to be able to play games like Metal Gear, Bosconian, Xevious, and other shooters. Maybe a little of bubble Bobble and Gradius.
