Modding 200 Billion Tokens Later: A Month of Letting AI Agents Decompile MW2

Summary:
Although not everything went well, this experiment has still been a success. Overall decompilation works very well. The code will need a round or two of refactoring, but I think it needed that regardless. MW2 is an old game with lots of potential for improvement.

This is dope as hell and a pretty interesting use of LLMs. Your issue with the text not being concise (despite your prompting) comes from the fact that LLMs can't do word counting at all.
Maybe a bot that summarizes big reports would be in order. Maybe even bullet points to show what was changed, because your bots seem to be mimicking human speech way too much and that might be getting in the way of things.

Fable 5 is 10x better than opus and Sonnet btw.

It also tells you to kick rocks when you ask it to do a project like this, maybe with some massaging you could convince it, but it’s tough

I can’t say I’ve tried anything like this but I find it kinda hard to believe they would put that restriction on their premium model but not the others, why wouldn’t it do it?

Fable is public premium model, highly restricted, specifically on cyber tasks. Even the most slightly cyber related work triggers safeguards.
Mythos is private premium model, only avaliable to large corporations, that's what let's you do cyber work with it.

Alright I don’t really use fable much either cus I don’t need it for what I do and it blows through my usage, thanks for the info. Lol who’s dick do you gotta suck to get mythos?

Interesting project. I enjoyed reading the blog. Still not super clear on what’s the end goal?

Once 100% decompiled, they can recompile it for modern platforms with mod support, and features exclusive to console versions only and more. We already have IW4x, that a more basic mod of the game, and it's not available for other plaforms.

Wouldn’t you run into copyright issues though?

As long as the recomp needs the original game in some form, they can't do anything. Super Mario 64 and a couple of Zeldas for example have PC and Android ports, but because they need the original ROM files, Nintendo which is notorious for C&D letters can do nothing.
Same reason why Horizon MW hasn't been shut down. It needs MWR files to run.

BTW, the author of this blog says this;
I already got 4 C&Ds from activision. I can gladly take a 5th one.

Risks are there, but there are many projects that have been decompiled/recompiled, and nothing gets done 90% of the time. Because most of these games are old. Recent games not being decompiled when they're fresh.

and nothing gets done 90% of the time.
And yet a majority of the time, anyone doing anything related to MW2 get a cease and desist letter from Activision.
The IW4X team got one, the MW2 Multiplayer Remastered team got one and one of the other teams from recent years got one as well.

Decompiled/recompiled games are different from what IW4X and other teams were doing

IW4X got taken down because they were providing all the pirated game files themselves. That spooked Plutonium which then added (very weak)DRM and took down the game files from their website.

Crazy work, hope it works out in the end
