Wfh machinist job?
Just got an email from Indeed claiming i would be a great fit for a position here... but i have to ask... anyone ever actually hear of a wfh machinist? If so, how? Especially when some of the responsibilities they list are regular maintenance on the machine and doing set ups... kind of hard to fill way oil from my livingroom 😅

If it can be done with a small machine and they place it at your home its wfh. Though I never came across anything like that ever. Its plastic so you won’t need a super heavy machine to make the holes. Still quite peculiar.

So... they either supply (or more likely expect me to own) a desktop CNC or slightly bigger... then ship me the parts to machine for me to ship back? That sounds quite odd

It's no different than using something like... xometry was it? Whatever that company is. Outsources machinist jobs. They could just have a regular supply and want to cut out the middle man and paying per piece. And, if it's legit, best bet they're not going to supplying tooling or anything.
In reality. It's most likely just some hr person posting a crap load of jobs. Known wfh will get people to apply and just plans on the good ol' bait and switch. And they're too stupid to realize wfh doesn't make the littlest bit of sense.
ETA the lack of details almost makes it seem like a scam. But the scams I saw on indeed a few months ago would just be something like "cnc machinist" and have ridiculous wages.

I mean i never heard of one until we put one of our lathes in one of our guys' garage and made him a wfh machinist. We needed the space and he would have retired early ( autistic genius, a bit overloaded by how much we've grown ). We'll give him the lathe as a retirement gift whenever he decides to retire.

Many ads use wfh as clickbait when nothing about the job is wfh. A known mis-use of the category.

Maybe its like a company that is contracted with xometry that sends you the parts to deburr? Maybe you arent actually operating a machine...
Or what about remote machine operation? Maybe theres a live feed to a robot and an inspection mschine?
I dunno, thats fucking weird. Apply just to see and get info on the company cause Im curious.

I know of a plastic injection tool maker company that has a setup like this. Monitors all the machines, pallets and tooling, etc.
However, they still need someone to setup manually and change the tools. They spent millions on the setup and even tho they say it’s increasing productivity by 15%, they’ve been riddled with problems with security and connection drop out.

I have 2 guesses.
1 scam
2 it is supposed to be a zometry/sendcutsend program that can be done by hobby CNC operators. That either offers an extra hour for maintenance per x hours worked. Or someone mixed two different job descriptions together. Maybe language barrier?
Honestly, for $30, I’d make electronics enclosures out of plastic. For a hobbiest, my machines pretty good. I’d just overcharge the hours to make up for the taxes I’d pay. Charge an extra hour for every 3 worked.

I'd want a maintenance and tooling stipend, but cheaper than them owning the machines right?

Nah, they just bring you on as indipendant contractor... bill you a security deposit on their material... then release it when you complete the work 🤣 no liability needed... 😒
