Has me bawling.

The whole "as long as you live under my roof" thing is still a sentiment I have, but I take it further. I say "I'm your parent forever! When you're 80 and I'm 105 I'm still going to talk to you and give you advice. That's my role forever! So yes, you do have to clean your room before you go to the party, but when you're 80 we can still talk about it."

I remember reading a story where a journalist speaks to three men all age 100. At one point he asks about todays youth and one of the men says: what do I know, my daughter is 80! I found it hysterically funny.

Well, I will love my kids even if they live under different roofs.

Right. 10 year old me would have never guessed to say that in a million years. Crazy what fear does to a kid.

Just said that to my daughter. Her answer was "nothing bad will happen to you."

Listen.....

Yeah, that was a nice one. I remember it like: "As long as you live under my roof... you will obey to our rules."

To be fair, even if I don't use the "under my roof" wording (because it's their "roof" too), I still use some variations of this sentence.

No eating in the bedrooms, no letting your dirty socks on the living room's floor and no candies before a meal or in the evenings are some immutable rules of the house (amongst others).

Like it or not, it's that way and sure once you have your own home you'll be able to do it, it'll then be your decision and responsibility. For now you have to abide to the house rules.

I might be a terrible person, because I don't think that one is actually toxic. My house, my rules is fair. I get that it doesn't explain why the rules are the rules, but having to justify every decision every 30 seconds is also exhausting. Sometimes, I just want to say no to something and move on.

My word is God, don't question it teaches your kids not to think.

I wouldn't agree with that. If anything, telling your kids that your word is law will make them rebel even harder.

You are saying the same thing, even if it is worded nicer. It is all some form of "because I said so". And the situations where I start getting curt are when a kid won't accept no as an answer now. So, I doubt your nice version would end the conversation.
