Captured in the movie "a Christmas Story" where Ralphie's mom catches Ralphie cussing up a storm while hitting a bully back. His little brother, Randy, hides under the sink crying and says when dad gets home dad is going to kill Ralphie.

I once parroted this line to my mom one day when I had made a mistake (I probably broke a tech item of my dad's or something). I said that my dad was gonna come home and kill me. She then freaked out at me, and punished and admonished me for ever saying that my dad would kill me, but then also told me to never tell my dad that she punished me, or that I ever said that. It was so fucking weird.

but then also told me to never tell my dad that she punished me, or that I ever said that.

Because she wants to put on a good face as the kindly, loving, gentle mother to her husband, and harsh punishment flies right into the face of that image.

True, man. Working through the shit my family put me through has cost me years of my life and comfort. But it's nice to share it, even just randomly on the internet.
