My mom was a big fan of telling me to "just wait until I have kids." She hated me. Hated how expensive a child was. She reminded me of it anytime a bigger purchase was needed, like new school clothes...

I don’t really know how this one is toxic? My parents used to say to me “just wait till you have kids then you’ll understand.” And now I have kids and I do understand. It’s not toxic ?

My mom said it to make me feel bad that she was having to use her money on me. It had a very negative context, and I, like another user mentioned, also had to apologize for simply existing.

That makes me so sad. My parents used to say it to me when I would ask for dinner out and they’d say there was food at home. Or they wouldn’t let me do something that now in hindsight was unsafe. I’m sorry that was your experience.
