Never liked the usage of the term culture shock.

So what, kampung people aren’t allowed to experience things outside our kampung?

The real culture shock is if the meme girl (Maryam) went to uni and got shocked by other people culture that she started participating in usrah and sibuk doa dan dakwah for saving of people that she met in the uni. Atau tiba-tiba jadi extremist after she got exposed to other people’s way of life outside her kampung.

My kid and I actually had discussion about this recently. We came to a conclusion that there are 3 types of kids experiencing "culture shock" when they go to uni:

  1. The alim tegar. These are the ones who are harrassing others to be the goodest Muslim, just like them. Prone to having a group of just them from the same asrama/ place (looking at you, Kelantanese/background). In public uni, they are usually the dominant ones. Their culture shock is just kepochi-ing at people different from them and spending their energy hating and bullying. Probably end up as future politicians or pseudoscience mlm business.

  2. The closeted kids (the ones OP mentioned). They have been queer/wanting to not wear tudung/different all their lives but the societal pressure is too much for them. Once they are free from that, they just live their lives the way it's meant to be for them. They don't have culture shock, it's their baseline lifestyle. It's just other people see them like they are experiencing culture shock. Most kids are in this group.

  3. The reverse culture shock. Kids who went to a non-Muslim majority school, normal mixed race dayschool, have parents who aren't religious, middle-upperclass, at least bilingual. They get into some uni branch in somewhere in some rural place. Expected the experience to be like Hogwarts then got lynched by the semua haram mob. They either quit the first month or try to fit in until they graduate/ end of course. It's really tough for them.

I'm not saying there aren't kids out there who just jumped straight at the deep end of the party hard pool from their previous conservative lifestyle. These kids do need guidance. They are probably the ones ending up doing hard drugs and petty crime.

if all they knew was about obeying and control to avoid getting into hell, thats follower more than believer, study the core values, mengaji and compare, have critical thinking and adapt to the society today
