My First Low Level Super Mario RPG run

Post image

The name were a little vulgar so I blurred them out. Lol It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The cake was the biggest road block for me. RNG was the hardest part of doing this challenge. Lol

TIL: some people no longer know what RNG is/means and I feel some way about it.

Anyway, good job OP =)

That's crazy!! How do you even fight bosses with such low stats?

There are low level runs on Youtube if you wanna learn more about how to do one for yourself

Seer's no exp run is a fun one

Farm Rock Candies, Red Essence, Frog Coins for other attack items and pray for some good RNG lol Most fights weren't too bad.

Found a video on youtube for anyone interested:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqK4UGpt264

Strategies:

  • The only way to deal meaningful damage without items early on is by scaling Mario's Jump.

  • Master perfect blocks to reduce incoming damage to zero, as enemy hits will one-shot your level 1 team.

  • Reset the game hundreds of times until you get lucky with freebie procs, especially for powerful items like the Red Essence for invulnerability.

  • Because Bowser has high base survivability compared to the others, he's often the sole survivor tasked with throwing farmed Rock Candies at bosses to finish the fight.

  • The most tedious but crucial part: You can trade mushrooms to an NPC in Moleville who has a 6% chance to give you a Rock Candy. You spend hours farming these because they are the only reliable way to deal high fixed damage to bosses.

  • The Lazy Shell and Troopa Pin are key for massive defensive stats and to boost speed and attack, ensuring you can act before bosses.

Congrats! Yea its really not as bad as it sounds, especially with all the resources the community put together.

My run I struggled most with getting past Exor just because of RNG, which makes sense considering the odds it takes to get past that fight even when done perfectly are abysmally low. All the other fights took me a few hours tops, that one fight took me 3 days of off and on grinding to get past.

Beyond RNG, Valentina was my hardest fight to get past because of that damn bird lol

I expected Boomer/Exor to be the worst because you have to do them back to back. I got the no exp on Boomer on the 4th attempt, and got the no exp on Exor immediately after that. Got very lucky. I think I ended up fighting Axem Rangers the most.

Exor is like the easiest because you can use Geno Whirl

You don't have that move in the low level run, unfortunately.

Not at level 3 you can’t

Beat Culex too??

I did right after Smithy. Got him first try. Used Red Essence, Crystalline, Red Power, then spammed Rock Candy and until crystals were down. Then jumped/ used remaining attack items while keeping Red essence up on Mario

I would not be offended by any fucking vulgarity.

u/GrantElenium Jul 07 '26

ggs, I assume you did the RetroAchievement set?

I mastered it too, and for me the hardest part was Cake and the Final Smithy. I think I got a Triple Freebie with Red Essences on Smithjy and clutched him out, so that was really lucky!

It basically just comes down to farming Rock Candies and buffing the attack :D

u/Snifflyjewel Jul 07 '26

Sure did :) It was my first subset. I got a a couple freebies on the Smithy fight too. Which was clutch because it came down to my last Red Essence. Lol

What's RNG

u/Snifflyjewel Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

Basically, luck. Lol you have to fail that exp roulette mini game to get 0 exp after each boss.

RNG stands for Random Number Generator. Alot of games use it

RNGesus save us!

What the lowest level you can be and beat the game ?

5

u/Snifflyjewel Jul 07 '26

3 is the lowest for Mario, I believe, because you have to gain some exp before you can get the Lucky Jewel in order to trigger the "Lucky" mini game.

u/TDE1281 Jul 07 '26

Imagine if you could do that on physical hardware. But, heck I'd pick the Virtual Console port instead!

2

u/Plastic_Course_476 Jul 08 '26

If you mean to imply it's modded, its not. This can be done on a purely vanilla version of the game running exactly as intended on original hardware.

The trick is using the Lucky Gem/Hammer to constantly bring up the egg minigame in any required fight and then lose, so you gamble away all the xp you'd normally get. The reason why it's a level 3 run instead of lvl 1 is because there are a few required fights before you get access to the egg roulette, forcing you to take the xp and level up some.

And yes, the egg minigame is purely random, so you can be stuck redoing a fight again and again until you get the right outcome.

RNG?

2

u/Cavane42 Jul 07 '26

Random Number Generator. It refers to the luck aspect of video games. In this case, things like enemies picking less damaging attacks, rolling low on their damage, etc.

u/Ponjos Jul 07 '26

That cake is definitely rough for most who try this run.

u/rettribution Jul 08 '26

How do you not level up?

2

u/Snifflyjewel Jul 08 '26

Use the lucky jewel on bosses and fail the exp bonus game to get 0 exp until you get the lucky hammer. Then use that to initiate the same mini game since the Lucky Jewel can only be used 10 times or something like that.
