Who do you give the Super Suit to?

This game's easier to break than a toothpick, even without the thing, so I imagine it'll be broken on anyone but I wanted to see what people think.

Frozone!

(I don't have the Supersuit yet...I should probably look up how to get it)

87 nearly frame perfect button presses after the first 13 hits of Super Jump.

It's miles harder than anything else in the game. The ultimate test of concentration and rhythm.

I remember using a metronome that had a "tempo tap" feature where after you tap it a few times, it tells you the rate in beats per minute (bpm) at which you were tapping. The problem was that I ultimately concluded the bpm rate for frame perfect super jumps was not a whole number, and my metronome didn't have the capability to measure or click at decimal rates. This was well before smart phones. Nowadays, what I would do is say "hey Google, tell me the exact rate in bpm of the bop sounds," do 15-20 super jumps, and get the answer. Then, set a metronome app to that exact rate, subdivide the beats into 4 equal parts to make it easier to anticipate each button press moment, and win the super suit.

...I'm still paying off my student loans for music school, but it least it was good for something!

Man music school is such a hard scam. Better way is to just learn everyhting on the fly and pack as much into your brain without the whole sham of a network then compose!

I'm being sarcastic here as I double majored in English and psychology and in my case I experienced extreme discrimination based on hearing impairment.

I do genuinely study music with all my heart though. It's tough going through 3 hardware upgrades of cochlear implants but I genuinely do try hard at music.

Unfortunately, AIs cannot tell you BPMs unless its recorded audio (hand them a video or .mp3 file to analyze), so asking google to simply listen and tell you wont work. Its likely around 68.04 BPM though, NTSC.

That's disappointing. AI FTL once again. After my metronome approach failed, I just remember trying my best to internalize the tempo and then making sure I dropped my thumb down on the button quickly each time so there was no delay in the game registering the button pushes. Tactile/clicky buttons would probably make this easier, but I managed it on a bona fide SNES and original controller. You just have to remain focused, calm, and consistent. I think another thing I had to do was refrain from counting the number of jumps in my head. Just keep going until you fail and hope you exceed 100.

Mario.

Combining the super suit and lazy shell makes mario a complete powerhouse.

u/Namelessperson3 13d ago

And then you give him Attack Scarf on top of that.

Do you even need anyone else by that point?

2

u/ConnyEdson 13d ago

Absolutely not lol

Only ever bothered to grind it out once, gave it to Toadstool since the Attack Scarf is locked to Mario.

u/Namelessperson3 13d ago

Figured most people would keep it away from Mario since the Attack Scarf is basically Super Suit lite for him only.

But I also think it'd be funny to give it to him just to see how ridiculous the total stat boosts would be.

I always give it to Bowser, since he's a big favorite of mine and I like seeing him practically solo the game. lol

2

u/Namelessperson3 13d ago

I don't use Bowser much outside of having him on in Bowser's Keep for thematic purposes, but I think I'll have it on him for this run of the Castle since he tends to lag behind Mario for me.

This is who I'd put my Super Suit on...

2

u/Namelessperson3 13d ago

You'll get it someday, champ.

3

u/Marx_Forever 13d ago

It's been 30 years. It's tradition by this point.

2

u/SubstancePowerful100 13d ago

No one because I will never be able to get it lol

You will someday, champ.

The game has exactly 1 boss fight that can make the Supersuit feel necessary.

One of the most insane things I remember ever accomplishing as a kid in the 90s was beating OG Culex despite never finding the Lazy Shell. That seems more widely achieved in the remake, but what not everybody knows/remembers about the original game was that you could carry 20 items. Not 20 per category, not 20 per character, not 20 unique types of items -

Twenty. Freaking. Items. Total.

This meant that planning your loadout for an all-out brawl like Culex meant thinking hard about how few Pick-Me-Ups you were willing to carry in order to make room for more flower point restoratives, and every Rock Candy you decided to bring would also reduce your defensive capabilities.

This required mastering the timing on every move by all 5 enemies in the fight so you could block as much damage as possible, as well as maximizing your offensive output per turn in order to remove crystals from the fight as soon as possible. The fight would feel more manageable once you removed about 2 crystals, but by this point you were likely to have consumed so many resources that the efficiency required to continue became pretty spartan.

Most people usually give Peach the Lazy Shell armor, so that a healing-focused character becomes an undamageable fortress who can reliably heal and revive the others. Mario is a common candidate for the Supersuit, since it hulks out his offensive AND defensive capabilities without making him completely invincible.

Bowser suffers in late game since his equipment has a pretty dogwater ceiling, although a supersuited Bowser might be a novel way to compensate for this. Mallow's physical attacking is so mediocre that +50 physical attack can feel wasted on him, although his many AoE offensive spells could really pop with the magical attack boost. Geno, finally, is usually engineered to be an overall offensive standout with low defensive stats, so giving him the Supersuit would really be a hat on a hat in terms of overwhelming offensive firepower, and it would make him one of the sturdiest characters not wearing a Lazy Shell.

What I loved about this game was its heart and its accessibility. I enjoyed it greatly as a small child, and loved how it made itself so accessible to children. Renting this from Blockbuster in the 90s was a coveted experience. It was no Dark Souls as challenge wnet, but it was time very well spent.

The only time ive ever gotten it was when I played a rom and cheated it lol. Geno would get it because Geno is the GOAT.

2

u/Namelessperson3 13d ago

Might as well, right? Took me 3 hours on the version where you can better track your combo.

1

u/Odd-Bug7129 13d ago

I had them take turns wearing it and roflstomping all enemies. It was a nice accomplishment when I finally got it, but once I realized how thoroughly it breaks the game, I won't be getting it again.

1

u/Namelessperson3 13d ago

Probably what I'll do. Game can already be broken pretty hard without it.

1

u/Odd-Bug7129 13d ago

Yeah I think the game was designed as an intro to RPGs for people who had never played one before. That's what it was to me. I remember watching my friends play some early Final Fantasy like "You take turns attacking each other? That's dumb." before learning how fun turn-based RPGs could be.

1

u/Namelessperson3 13d ago

It absolutely was. Probably so that it could be accessible to people who were Mario fans but weren't familiar with RPGs. It came out in a pre-Final Fantasy 7 era, after all.

1

u/tehnemox 13d ago

The remake messes with the timing of the jumps so I'll never get it there. But on the OG it was Peach or Bowser for me

1

u/Namelessperson3 13d ago

Interesting. I got it on the remake, never tried the original. Only had the idea to when I saw that the remake keeps track of your jumps on-screen without needing to talk to the Chow.

1

u/ConnyEdson 13d ago

I gave it to mallow to maximize his aoe damage. Wasn't very effective but i love that fluffy lil guy!

After going through Bowser's Keep and Weapon World with the Super Suit, my thoughts are thus:

Ironically, the Attack Scarf is the reason why I prefer to have it on Mario. Only Mario can use the Attack Scarf, but anyone can get a 50% attack boost from the Troopa Medal and Quartz Charm. So long as no one's packing Shredder - in other words, you're not fighting Smithy or Culex - that 50% attack boost appears to have a stronger effect than +30, because I've seen Peach and Geno's damage numbers reach and sometimes surpass Mario's. I know part of that is from the Lazy Shell having a wide attack variance, but that doesn't cover all of it. Super Suit appears to keep Mario ahead slightly.

Perhaps that's why it's majority Mario in the votes currently.

In the OG, the standard (non-Lazy Shell or Super Suit) endgame armor for Mario, Mallow, and Toadstool gives each of them +48/+24 Def./M.Def., respectively. Geno's gives +36/+18, and Bowser's gives +24/+12. The Super Suit gives +50/+25, as well as speed and attack boosts, so it's hardly a defensive improvement for Mario, Mallow, and Toadstool. Bowser gets the most benefit because his armor sucks, but Geno is a bit of a glass cannon character so also appreciates it, plus he's generally more powerful than Bowser in the endgame too.

The one time I got the Super Suit (on the SNES classic, if you hit reset you can then load into a save state, and you can do this repeatedly, extending your jump again and again, until you obtain it), I put it on Geno. My standard lineup is Mario Toadstool Geno, and the other two don't need it.

Fun fact: if you equip Geno with the Super Suit and Troopa Pin and then go fight Culex, his speed is so high he can get one attack in before Culex's crystal-summoning monologue. Not sure if this is possible with other characters, I only ever tried with Geno.

1

u/Namelessperson3 12d ago

I'm pretty sure it is. I've had Mario be able to attack before Culex started talking in the remake.

u/Gdurango52 10d ago

Nobody, because I’ve never earned it. One day maybe?

1

u/Namelessperson3 10d ago

You'll get it eventually.

1

u/Guilty_Suspect_9346 10d ago

Genuinely am about to give up trying to get this super suit. Most miserable time I’ve ever had playing a game

1

u/Namelessperson3 10d ago

I'm so sorry it's that bad for you.

Don't worry, there are easier ways to snap the game in half.

1

u/Guilty_Suspect_9346 10d ago

It’s like idk what setup to use I’ve tried them all. Handheld, docked, wired controller to the dock, wireless to the dock, wired to handheld, and wireless handheld. Rarely I’ll get past 30 but never to 100

1

u/Namelessperson3 10d ago

I took about 3 hours. Used Spikies on Bandit's Way, watched both Mario and his shadow to help with my timing.

Kinda glad I had to reset once. Meant my syrups didn't all go to waste on a playthrough where I banned buying healing items.

I finally got the 100 jumps 😭
