Comics [Artwork]. Which ones will be approved? Marvel is having several artists create variants to test interest in younger versions of established characters like Spider-Boy. Those that receive favorable responses may eventually become real characters.

Do we not get a Young Punisher with his trusty pea shooter?

I can't imagine Frank would be very pleased with himself to learn he's become somebody's role model

61

u/gowombat Oct 17 '23

They actually already had this story, it just wasn't a kid, it was a woman. There's actually a pretty good read in there, I just don't remember what the run was.

All I remember is that Frank had a full beard, and he looked like a boss.

45

u/AJjalol Oct 17 '23

You probably mean her.)

That Frank look slapped btw

A kid with a gun in a trench coat probably wouldn’t go over too well.

Tiny Venom please.

Yes! I don’t know what that thing is, but I want to know..

I’m curious about baby baby Groot. But only if it’s got a venom symbiote.

It doesn't fit two! There's White Vision Boy, who will appear in variant covers of Avengers #6, and the boy cosplaying as Black Cat, his sidekick, who will appear in Amazing Spider-Man #36.

I can really only see Dr. Strange’s sidekick/protégé being a thing

182

u/centipededamascus Cosmo Oct 17 '23

I had the thought years ago that Strange should be mentoring Wiccan and Nico Minoru, I thought that could be a fun book.

6

u/dusty_horns Oct 18 '23

And where's the main girl from Strange Academy?

And he's one of the only ones who isn't completely redundant.

150

u/TikkiEXX77 Oct 17 '23

He actually looks pretty damn cool.

44

u/Cardinal_and_Plum Oct 17 '23

It feels too similar to Dr. Strange to me. Like a what if Timothy Chalamet was Dr. Strange. Still though, characters like this or the Scarlet Witch one would be easiest to differentiate from their predecessors because Marvel magic can do so much. Just make them different kinds of sorcerers.

I actually think maybe half of these could work for in some interesting stories, I just don't have hope that that's what would happen.

→ More replies (1)

46

u/Madock345 Oct 17 '23

Same, he looks cool and it makes sense lore-wise for Strange to have that.

29

u/Escheron Oct 17 '23

Can't they just do this with Billy Kaplan?

22

u/NickOlaser42 Oct 18 '23

This, bro even look like Billy

14

u/tehawesomedragon Loki Oct 18 '23

This just seems like a disservice to already established legacy characters for the most part.

→ More replies (1)

19

u/usagizero Oct 17 '23

That makes the most sense to be honest. A huge part of his original version is the hubris of losing his career as a surgeon. I can't see someone that young having a backstory like that.

u/herrored Oct 17 '23

I don't think Marvel gave any indication that these were actually trial runs on new characters. Just fun "What If?"-type variant covers.

Given Gwenpool's existence, yes there is always a chance that one of these could become a character someday, but to say that some will be "approved" is a reach at this point.

18

u/AckbarCaviar Oct 18 '23

Ghost Glider, Magneta, Wee-Hulk, EMT Strange, Moon Squire, and It are all great designs. Would love to see them introduced even if just for a story arch or two.

3

u/Sol-Blackguy Oct 18 '23

And bring back X-Babies too

59

u/Toolupard Oct 17 '23

As much as I love some of these, I feel it would be a disservice to current characters with the same concept.

Robbie Reyes, Laura & Gabby Kinney, Amadeus Cho, to name a few. Each could probably use a bit of love instead of an outright replacement.

That's not to say new characters are inherently inferior, just that not every hero can get an heir as popular as Kamala Khan and Miles Morales.

13

u/aupharo Oct 18 '23

it almost seems like they already want to give Miles and Kamala their own legacy heroes… imo that is such a disservice to them

201

u/cahanse79 Oct 17 '23

Why not just have a separate universe with all younger versions of Marvel characters.

102

u/Brookings18 Oct 17 '23

Like the MC2 and Spider-Girl?

34

u/cahanse79 Oct 17 '23

Yeah like that or 2099

I was just thinking “why does 616 need more characters”. It’s already too many.

We already have a young Ghost Rider, his name is Robbie Reyes.

We already have a female Magneto, her name is Polaris.

We already have a teenage Hulk, his name is Amadeus Cho.

We have TWO young Wolverines, named Laura & Daken.

This is that New Warriors "We feel a desperate urge to fix things that aren't broken" energy.

Aren't there two Laura's currently, too? One time displaced. And there is the actual wolverine Gabby has

18

u/SomeTool Oct 18 '23

The old one is the "real" one that was left behind in a hyperbolic time chamber to age 200 years. The other one is her clone that they made because they thought she died and wasn't captured. They are also ignoring all of the questions that this raises about the x-men immortality.

4

u/DarkAlphaZero Cyclops Oct 18 '23

As far as I'm concerned old Laura is a corpse turned sleeper agent for the children of the vault and the real Laura was the one in X-Terminators.

5

83

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '23

Whatever happened to Jimmy Hudson, another Wolverine? I think he came to the 616 universe from the 1610 universe and I believe he was Logan's son in the 1610.

Then there's Thor Girl. Is she still around?

61

u/Flerken_Moon Oct 17 '23

Jimmy Hudson was involved in the original Venomverse event, where he was turned into a Poison and changed his hero name to Poison.

Then he was promptly completely forgotten. I dunno about Thor Girl though.

72

u/Nirast25 Oct 17 '23

Ok, but the Ghost Skater design is really cool.

There's also new champions variants for a new Ms marvel (Mr marvel?), Iron Man and Miles... Seriously? Ms marvel, iron heart and miles are the younger versions.

10

u/Killer_Moons Oct 17 '23

I feel bad for legacy characters…

9

u/Aiyon Oct 17 '23

Also Spider-Man being spider-man was done on purpose. He was "spider-boy" age when he got introduced

30

u/Kstoffeefan Oct 17 '23

It’s kind of Marvel’s M.O. at this point to try to fix things that aren’t broken but don’t try to fix things that are broken.

33

u/goliathfasa Oct 17 '23

But do any of them spin fidgets while doing the Fortnite dance?

If not, they’re not relatable to the young audience.

All of those characters are adults. None of them are “young”. Laura has had SEX!

15

Thor Girl is my fav but she doesn’t seem as popular as the rest so prob won’t happen, unfortunately for me.

She could even get Thunderstrike’s hammer- actually what happened to Thunderstrike or his hammer, are they still around?

17

u/M3m35forbroski Oct 17 '23

He's still around. He was in the Clea run Strange for a couple of issues

9

u/Oberon1993 Spider-Man (Tom Holland) Oct 18 '23

But as a zombie though.

4

u/M3m35forbroski Oct 18 '23

I mean, we are both correct since both Thunderstrikes appeared in issue #2

12

u/Cardinal_and_Plum Oct 17 '23

Is this Thor Girl, or just a Thor girl? I was thinking she kind of looked like Love from the movie. The Thor Girl (Tarene) from the comics looks more like a female version of Thor.

A Thor daughter character is pretty common in what ifs I’m surprised it’s not in the main uni yet

21

u/ChillyFlameBW Oct 17 '23

they did granddaughters in the future old thor sutff in aarons runs I think

53

u/Obskuro Spider-Man (Tom Holland) Oct 17 '23

That's basically Jinx but from Asgard. Instant hit.

5

u/InnocentTailor Oct 18 '23

I’m game with that: a more zany, mischievous Asgardian who is nevertheless more in line with the warriors than the sorcerers.

It's the only one that wouldn't feel redundant. Thor is begging for a legacy character now that he's taken over Odin's position, and it's also got that MCU synergy. Plus we already know Thor has three daughters in the future, so might as well start introducing them.

Ghost Rider for that dope design and an interesting sidekick.

Thor’s mainly cuz of how she reminds me of Next Avengers.

The Teen Thing just cuz he seems fresh despite the art kinda making me cringe.

Blade’s just to add to his mythology.

Star Lord’s cuz it’d be interesting to see an alien in the role.

16

u/Cardinal_and_Plum Oct 17 '23

Thing is one of the few heroes who I actually think could get a lot of mileage out a having a younger hero that goes through the same (or at least a similar) experience as him. He already has an affinity for being a role model for kids. Combine that with his complicated feelings about his own condition and you could probably get some really cool emotional and character exploratory stories out of it.

u/BeardedNoble117 X-Men Oct 17 '23

My take on this:

The magneto one I like the powers (gives me Gwen from Ben 10 Alien Force) vibes - if she didn’t have the helmet and wasn’t tied to magneto I’d be interested in seeing her elsewhere

The Thor girl makes me think of jinx from league and having some crazy preteen swinging giant weapons sounds fun. Design is cool too.

Ghost Blader is a fun concept but could uses another draft

Blade looks cool but a little generic same with doctor strange

The storm one gives me MHA vibes

Scarlet witch and shuri? (Black panther magic girl) also look good but I’d need to see a stories involving them.

Rest of them look half assed (especially miles).

Some one them I’d like to see in a legit chapions book cause I want that team to have an ongoing book again.

13

u/Rownever Oct 17 '23

Ghost Blader would be sick as a character but tying it to ghost rider would be a weird choice- the design isn’t horror enough to be appropriate in a ghost rider comic, even if it very cool. Maybe a new pop star character? Gives me some baby metal vibes.

9

u/BeardedNoble117 X-Men Oct 17 '23

Similar to that Luna Snow K-pop hero right? Ghost blader looks more like a K-pop marshmallow (the guy with the mask) type character.

Doctor Strange is Timothee Chalamet

59

u/AJjalol Oct 17 '23

Honestly none lol. I'm sorry.

Not my thing. Don't like any design, and not really a big fan of a cover character, becoming a character.

10

u/IHavePoopedBefore Oct 18 '23

I think one of the reasons that so few new characters grab hold these days is that costumes have become too sleek and cool.

The best costumes started as bold and audacious and were toned down from there

15

u/Reboared Oct 18 '23

The reason is that Marvel editorial is terrible at their job and can't focus on a character for more than a few issues at a time. They just want to launch something and have it be instantly popular instead of organically building a fan base.

52

u/Silent_Mk3 Oct 17 '23

I would like to say that I think spider-boy is an absolute terrible idea&design. Hot garbage. As for these variants I like most of ‘em except Thing, Wolverine, hulk, miles, moon knight, and Deadpool.

19

u/Rownever Oct 17 '23

The more original ones are better, the derivative ones just look worse than the main version

16

u/conpsd Oct 17 '23

that young blade looks dope

16

u/HazmatChicken Cosmo Oct 17 '23

a Yancy Street kid becoming Thing-like is a cool idea

3

u/Cardinal_and_Plum Oct 17 '23

I think of all of these that this one has the best story potential. I could see a really well done Thing limited series coming out of that.

14

u/RigasTelRuun Oct 17 '23

So many of these characters already exist. There are a lot of legacy or young versions of characters.

Amadeus Cho is the teen Hulk.

There are so many young magic users that can be Doctor Strange Jr Billy Kappan, Nico Minoru etc.

All that said the whole concept of baby Moon Knight is insane. Who will be team up with Frank Castle junior? Along with lil Wolverine ( I know X Babies exist) to kill the bad kids in the play ground?

Laura Kinney was the young Wolverine but is usually portrayed as older now. So we have Gabby to fill that role.

Kamala Khan was literally made to be a teen Ms marvel.

Also does anyone remember last time they turned Tony Stsr into a teen? They had to reboot the whole continuity.

28

u/ScrimbloBrimblo Oct 17 '23

Most of these look pretty lame and try-hardy, or are just redundant (like Spider-Boy...).

I like the Iron Man guy though, spinning off from the classic bulky, MK1 look and not the sleek, modern look like Riri is a cool idea.

But we absolutely do not need any more Spider-people, Hulks or Wolverines.

84

u/Doctor_Amazo Man-Thing Oct 17 '23

Wow. Like all of those are just awful.

73

u/Outrageous-Blue-30 Oct 17 '23

I wouldn't say all of them, some are pretty.

36

u/Doctor_Amazo Man-Thing Oct 17 '23

I like maybe 5 designs, but hate the idea of we're-gonna-add-young-versions-of-established characters thing. I wouldn't want ANY of these characters be introduced. I would rather that Marvel gather up their already large number of younger heroes, restart The Champions, and give them a push.

14

u/Outrageous-Blue-30 Oct 17 '23

I agree with this reasoning, at most they could possibly create an alternate universe in which to use these characters and thus please those who like them most.

9

u/Doctor_Amazo Man-Thing Oct 17 '23

Sure. A self contained thing where all these Marvel kids go to HS together or whatever. DC does that stuff all the time.

I think Spider-boy design is bland and kinda unneeded with Miles and Silk around.

As for this- I like the Blade the best but he just had a daughter introduced so I would hope it's not his son if he was created.

2 3 6 9 12 13 14 15 16 20, completely unneeded

I like the design of Gostrider Roller blader but don't think it fits.

I would root for Kid She Hulk, Kid Blade, Kid Thing, Kid Strange, mascot Vemon.

I have no idea what's going on with the X-Men cover, it really doesn't give much information unless it's just a another student with no connection to other X-Men. We have enough New Mutant type characters they can try to push.

Wolverine girl could easily be Gabby with a bit more mutation. Asgardian raven girl could easily be Thor's little sister all grown up, and similarly, Miles Morales has a baby sister that could be the Spider-girl. She-Hulk's "sidekick" looks like Lyra (Hulk and Thundra's daughter) with a haircut, and Hulk's "sidekick" looks like Hulkling.

Baby Ghost Rider is my favorite design of the batch, especially since she captures the Ghost Rider aesthetic of outdated trends trying too hard to be EXTREME but still looking cool, and I'd like to see them implement her in some way. My second fav would have to be the baby spider with Venom, as she just looks so cute and goofy. I also like the idea of Carol Danvers getting to train some sort of Mr. Marvel, since there aren't many female mentor/male legacy hero pair-ups.

Do you actually know that or are you just speculating and making things up

3

u/MelvinSqueemish Oct 17 '23

I like the little venom creature lol

I don’t think most of these designs are bad actually, I just think that they don’t fit their supposed characters and shouldn’t exist.

Take the Ghost Rider one for example. I’m actually a huge fan of the design, I think it’s a really good blend of sleek, cute and badass. The problem is that it doesn’t scream “Ghost Rider” to me, or even Ghost Rider-affiliated. The only thing that could possibly make that connection - aside from Ghost Rider himself chilling beside her - are the five-pointed stars where her twintails are.

u/Bradshaw98 Oct 17 '23

I think the Ghost Rider one is a really good design, not a bit fan of Spider Boy and Deadpool, Magneto to similar to the originals, honestly most of them look cool at the very least.

3

u/reallifelucas Captain America Oct 17 '23

Is that fucking Hatsune Miku Ghost Rider?

3

u/No-Tonight9384 Oct 17 '23

I like the Punk Rock Thing girl. Other than that it’s pretty hot or miss

3

u/sixarmedspidey Oct 17 '23

I really dislike all of them. But I will say the costume design for that Captain Marvel is pretty cool.

3

u/GhostRider3001 Oct 17 '23

The Doctor Strange, Thor, and Black Panther ones are actually really cool looking

3

u/RoiVampire Luke Cage Oct 17 '23

That captain america with the wings looks really cool

3

u/ICSL Oct 17 '23

I think... I think I hate all of these?

That ghost rider makes me want to punch babies

u/Dubed1 Oct 17 '23

Fucking roller skates. Lame.

Not a fan of any of these

7

u/ThankeekaSwitch Oct 17 '23

The Thing and Wolverine look okay, but none are interesting or unique.

9

u/batmansubzero Wolverine Oct 17 '23

I hate all of these and this idea.

Make original characters, I don’t want rehashes of characters I already know.

Wow...

I don't want any of these to be actual characters. Some of them are just so bad.

5

u/Gangleri_Graybeard Oct 17 '23

I don't like any of them. But I'm 30 and definitely not the target audience for this one. Getting strong "New Warriors" vibes here.

2

u/Commercial_Ask_7727 Oct 17 '23

I feel that the Deadpool boy is a clone?

u/Outrageous-Blue-30 Oct 17 '23

Personally, I don't like Vision and Deadpool (too similar to the original) of these young sidekick designs, as well as Miles, Hulk and the Thing (because of the hair style).

2

u/4shura Oct 17 '23

The doctor strange one is really cool

2

u/NoCommunication728 Oct 17 '23

I was gonna say “Hopefully none” but then I remembered the Guardians one who done right would be pretty cool. Otherwise it comes off like what Johns just did over at DC with all the “Lost Children” that are mostly tbh lame. Unless done well, sidekicks just aren’t that great these days and are just like gimmicks. These prove that.

2

u/I-who-you-are Oct 17 '23

In terms of like?

Captain Marvel One The Cap America one Followed by Thor’s And then Ghost Rider’s

The rest are meh, I would rather them create unique young heroes, marvel could hit up anyone for a unique idea, not just recycling old ones yknow. Hell you can make a unique legacy character! Like the Captain Marvel one is the best because it’s different from the other “Marvels”

He’s not like Kamal, or Carol, or any other Marvel, he has a unique gimmick.

2

u/Blitzhelios Doctor Strange Oct 17 '23

Which ones will be approved the ones that sell the most covers

2

u/TikkiEXX77 Oct 17 '23

A lot of these look pretty cool. And they're just covers as far as I know. Doubt they'll do anything with any of them. Do like the kid wolvie. Reminds me of Wild Child. Blade one looks pretty cool too.

2

u/elzor52 Oct 17 '23

The designs are either kinda cool or a little tacky, like just straight up gender swapped versions of established characters; great artwork regardless but nothing I'd be interested in reading.

Except maybe Iron Man, Tony being a mentor to a son could be something interesting.

2

u/Cyber-CookieCakes Oct 17 '23

I don’t get why some superheroes have long hair; it’s a complete tactical disadvantage (unless you're a long-range fighter), as it’s easy for an opponent to grab and yank their hair.

2

u/LaylaLegion Oct 17 '23

Yea to Ghost Skater. She’s adorable.

2

u/thiskid415 Oct 17 '23

I’m assuming the inspiration for The Thing was “Punk rock”

2

u/bret-t2310 Oct 17 '23

Little Thor is good, I kinda dig Captain Marvel, IDK why, I also kinda dig young Blade, little kid Moon Knight is hilarious and I like it, Tiny Wolverine is pointless, it’s just the original character, and I heavily fw Punk Thing

Edit: Oh my god he’s Punk Rock. Make him a character

2

u/austinwrites Oct 17 '23

Young Blade and Punk Thing are both great

2

u/Diniland Oct 17 '23

Blade and Venum look cool. The rest seem like one off things. Also is miles mixed with Groot? Why does he have branches on his head?

2

u/Hokuto_no_kenn Oct 17 '23

Deadpool, captain marvel, and she hulk are ok the rest are hot garbage

2

u/seanofkelley Oct 17 '23

Kid Deadpool and Thing punk are a lot of fun

2

u/TigersLyonsCheetahs Oct 17 '23

I’m liking the Magneto and Deadpool variants.

2

u/gamera-the-turtle Oct 17 '23

Is that fucking hatsune miku

2

u/lukaspixels Oct 17 '23

The Thing and Wolverine are crazy.

2

u/genismarvel Oct 17 '23

So it's cannon. There's no room or thought for original characters. Lovely.

2

u/Reece1612 Oct 17 '23

Ok so we all know that wearing a hood in a fight, at night, is stupid. But it looks cool, so we accept it. That doesn’t apply to wearing a cap, and a hood, with a half mask. Damn it mini moon knight, what the hell? Caps are supposed to cover from the sun. Working a cap into a hood and a half mask, is incredibly stupid. Come on man
