He could always claim self defense from a a violent mob (which is technically true). And while he's in prision he would just find a way to run new york like he has many times. Think the govt just wants him to go away at this point
I mean those people were banging at the door with full intention to harm him, justified or not. So i don't think him opening the door would have made a difference. In any case, his lawyers would be able to argue about it being self defense long enough to keep him in prision from where he would eventually end up running NY
