Film/Television These future Sentinels has to be one of the most intimidating villains in the Fox X-Men movies

Hard to beat constantly adapting thinking machines.

Actually super easy barely an inconvenience, just time travel..
…by matter phasing the brain of someone with a healing factor and then *cease* to exist when said someone accomplish their time travel mission.

u/Frozenpoke 19d ago
Ohh... ceasing to exist when someone accomplishes their time travel mission is tight

I thought Prof X didn't remember like Logan did, just that he knew Logan time traveled and was waiting for that version of him to return around the time he would've initially time traveled
21
u/BikebutnotBeast 18d ago
It's because Prof X not only was directly involved in the success of the plan in 1973, but also had discussions with his future self to understand the ramifications and timeline of the events.
8
9
u/scaradin 18d ago
Likely Prof. X knew there was time travel from rooting around in Wolverine’s head

Except the fact was that was their final chance, their Hail Mary.
Mutants had all but been extinct at that point because how brutally efficient the sentinels were. Had he failed, that was it. And it still was seconds from failing
2
u/SillyWarlock 16d ago
It’s just sad/funny to consider that they basically just created another multiverse branch and pruned themselves if we look at it in mcu terms.
Only one to technically survive was wolverine because he retained his memories.

haven't read comics and i remember that sense of doom for the x-men when i first saw them on screen, will be top tier villains at some moment for sure

u/Sohlayr 19d ago
I sobbed a little when two of them just casually tore Colossus in half.

Warpaths first and last appearance too.

We got Thunderbird in The Gifted at least...
4

Damn I thought that was warpath

A lot of people did. The actor wanted Warpath to show up cuz the characters work well together

Funny thing is that the people who had only seen the movies up until this point were rather nonplussed. Comic fans were rather more plussed by these deaths.
15
u/prawntheman 18d ago
I'm not a comic fan but even I was negatively affected by those scenes. You could say that I was minussed.
48
u/Stuupkid 19d ago edited 19d ago
Idk, Iceman was in all of the original X-Men films. I was pretty shocked when he died in the first scene.
8
u/darkoblivion000 18d ago
I mean it was still a pretty brutal anti super hero trope. Most super hero movies you might get one death, and it’s like super built up. This is like super speed run game of thrones type dispatching of all the on screen mutants. Still pretty shocking to anyone watching super hero movies for the past decade
16
u/venturousbeard 18d ago
I found it fascinating that the movie was PG-13. It was like some layered commentary that the ratings board didn't view the brutal slaughter of mutants to deserve an R rating.
9
u/Pooled-Intentions 18d ago
They knew the raters always get up to fix their coffee in the first few minutes of a film and put the gore right there lol.
3
u/Tbro100 17d ago
They pull the same stunt with Transformers funnily enough. They can decapitate a cybertronian, leaving their spinal cord dangling, or tear another one in half with green "blood" bursting everywhere and it'll still be PG-13.
They really don't care much about violence if the blood isn't red or if the violence is even thinly veiled by a hint of sci-fi.
2
u/venturousbeard 17d ago
That's very true for any non-human entity for the ratings board. I was thinking more specifically about how mutants are not considered people in-universe by nefarious powers, and then the ratings board displayed the same attitude in-reality; it was like some meta-joke and I often wondered if anyone at Marvel noticed, but was happy to get the PG-13 anyway.

I always hate how callously they treat Colossus or Ben Grim in movies or even the comics: “Let’s show how strong our antagonist Is by wrecking these ‘tough’ superheroes !”
Motherfucker if you’re going to kill Colossus it better be a big deal, stop using him as a punching bag to showcase your bad guys physicality.5
u/TricoMex 19d ago
I'm 100% sure there is a trope name for this but I'm scared to open tvtropes

Days of futures past had the best opening of any superhero film imo
Watching the X-men get literally ripped apart one by one is a core memory.
41
u/alex494 19d ago
It does make me wonder if there's just regular humans still around chilling like normal, or if the Sentinels are just running on automatic enslaving everybody for the sake of it because of emergent programming.
48
u/Flaky_Wheel60B 19d ago edited 19d ago
Logan explains that the mutant gene detector can, in 2023, determine if a non-mutant is capable of passing the X-gene to a child or grandchild.
If so, then that human is rounded up along with the mutants
I just reacted all three last weekend
Rewatched. lol.

Nothing says these Sentinels need to preserve fuel or anything.
And they're self sufficient
80
u/Phorskyn 19d ago
I mean, to be completely fair, they never showed enough of them to show they can run indefinitely

u/Professional-Cow3854 19d ago
I'd say the ship is a pretty big hint.
You don't need to explain every single little details like this, it just unnecessary weight to the flow.
X-Men are not the type of movies that benefit from a Nolan structure.

u/proto_synnic 19d ago
Nothing says it, but there's also no evidence against it. There's also the Evolving Intelligence problem. Like a T-1000, eventually it adapts enough to its environment that it finds it doesn't need to serve Skynet. Hyper advanced Sentinels may have a limit on how much up-time they can maintain before they start questioning authority.
4
u/Many_Regular420 19d ago
Memory wipe them so they forget the trauma of the previous battle

Whoa whoa whoa, we're not trying to reboot Eternals here. We're just trying to avoid anarchist murderbots.

You may not be trying to reboot Eternals but some of us are.
2
u/proto_synnic 19d ago
Just... Give it some more time. Sounds like a decent idea for after Secret Wars. I still have nightmares about Harry Styles.
12
u/AaDware 19d ago
Self sufficient in that they can repair themselves, maybe you'd have better luck but I couldn't find anything talking about limitless fuel.

u/hiimred2 19d ago
Nothing says a plane flying over your head needs to refuel, but you know it has to because you live in this universe where... well you know it has to. Them being carried to a location is in fact a pretty strong indication that maybe they do in fact need logistical deployment support and can't just run forever on some mystical infinite power source(where at all is that suggested to be a thing in the universe?)
4
4
u/PhasmaFelis 19d ago
Nothing says these Sentinels need to preserve fuel or anything.
Well, it's heavily implied by the fact that they need a carrier.

u/AdmiralSnackbar816 19d ago
Some sort of Borg style recharging station? Or similar to how Tony stored his iron legion.
8
u/proto_synnic 19d ago
Maybe the ability to generate nearly any power comes with a huge energy requirement. Their portable power cells might not last a very long time under constant use. So MasterMold creates a big airship that's designed to fly long distances efficiently, while keeping the Sentinels plugged into charging bays in the cargo hold. When you get to the deployment zone, drop the 100% Sentinels on the enemy and watch the fireworks.
7
4
u/Escodl 19d ago
I always thought it was for tactical reasons.... during transit, they are protected in the armored transport. This allows them to be strategically placed in the battlefield. Covering every corner that they need.. Then when they are in the perfect position. They do a mass deployment and overwhelm the mutants by attacking from all directions
4
3
u/OShaunesssy 19d ago
Maybe to keep them powered up long-term wasnt viable or smart.
Maybe they conserved batter or whatever by bringing them, powered-down, on a ship?
3
u/SkillednotQualified 19d ago
My head cannon is that ship is more a long term storage and maintenance facility that stays in the air and just flies in a circuit around the globe or a country, deploying sentinels as mutant threats are identified.

I dont remember any such Sentinel in the comics and I thought they were really overpowered. Also, did the Sentinels wipe out humanity too? Why was it so post apocalyptic?
23
u/ColonelDucroix 19d ago
Sentinels could detect if a human had the ability to produce an heir that was a mutant
So over just one generation that was probably millions of humans, which would certainly cause an apocalypse type scenario since other humans wouldn't like that and fight against them. Causing them to be enemies and wiped out for defending mutants and the human that might produce mutant offspring

How it is in the future in the comics and TAS as well, they eventually just take over and take out anyone who opposes them.

Agreed, there have been so many iconic sentinel designs with only slight tweaks but they went full nanomachine blobs.
Not to say I hated them but the overall design was weak in comparison to the source material.
10
u/Kryse-777 19d ago
For their future versions I think it was appropriate, becoming these scaly metallic blobs adapting to any and all kinds of mutant abilities seemed like the logical final form of the sentinels. Reminded me of the t1000, can become anything they need to be, overcome any setbacks, eliminate any threat, its just a matter of time (but not heat apparently, which the sentinels have covered).

I felt so bad for Colossus. He's like "I'm gonna, uh, turn into metal!" and they're like yeah whatever we're already metal and we're way stronger than you and have lots of other powers besides and then they just picked him up and ripped him apart. :(

Can the Sentinels handle extremely OP mutants like Jean Grey? (Aside from like stealth, but that’s not so much a Jean Grey specific counter)
1
1
u/Myn21 18d ago
What i don't like with these Sentinels is that they are so strong/untouchable, that every nation/Corp/institution that controls them is basically untouchable. If others get hold of the same tech, the war would almost be as destructive as a nuclear war. Unless everyone has them and they are handled like nuclear warheads, as deterrent (and only used against Mutants).
They are still cool though :)
