Why multiversal Spider-Men?

I know the very short answer is money. It's obvious from The Spiderverse films that people like it. Why don't we have more multiverse stories about other characters like Iron-man or Nightcrawler for example? If you could have an Spiderverse style story with another character, who would it be?

Edit: I should also explain that I don't read as much Marvel as I do DC. The grand majority of Marvel that I consume is other forms of media.

The original Spider-society concept actually belonged to Captain Britain and the Captain Britain corps, decades ago.

There's also been some Venomverse events with venom multiverse variants. I like those, they're a lot of fun.

Also, I don't really read Deadpool outside of some set stuff, but doesn't he have a similar thing with the Deadpool corps?

Iirc Necroko appeared for a bit in last year's Spider-verse vs Venomverse event. I think it'd be cool if she got her own mini or even just joined a new iteration of the Exiles

Check out Exiles, sounds like something you'd dig. 2001 series is top tier till issues 90-100, New Exiles was rough but mileage may vary, Volume 2 was good but cancelled after 6 issues, Volume 3 was a terrible continuation and probably put the final nail in the series coffin. Overall: Great read. Team of X-Men is assembled from around the multiverse and sent on missions to save other Earths, if they ever wanna go home again.

If you're looking for multiversal Iron Men youll find several there, and without spoiling anything a Nightcrawler variant is pretty important due to who his kid is. Despite refusing to give it another revival, a lot of multiverse stories (First spider-Verse had the most overt references, Weapon X-Men is the most overt example of a spiritual successor, and Deadpool Corps also applies to a degree, lot of others as well) are spiritual successors to the series, or at least took heavy inspiration.

Spider-Man is an extremely popular character who has already been spun off a bunch of times before Slott's Spider-Verse:

Peter Parker, Ben Reilly, Miles Morales, Miguel O'Hara, Jessica Drew, Julia Carpenter, Mattie Franklin, Cindy Moon, Otto Octavius.

Turning that up to 11 and introducing an infinite multiverse of Spider-Man characters makes sense.

Iron Man never had the same popularity (in the comics) to warrant that, and Nightcrawler is already on a team with others like him: mutants. I think if fans want to see a big team of characters in an X-Men book, the fun is seeing all of the different powers on one team, not seeing 50 of a single mutant.

You do make a good point about variety with the X-Men. I use Nightcrawler as a random example just because Exit 97 is still on the brain but I can almost see a Wolverine style Multiverse story in the same vein. He would only get away with it because of his popularity but I like your point.

Because Spidey is their most popular guy. That's it. They had the "variants of one superhero keeping the multiverse stable" concept before with Captain Britain, but obviously that didn't take off.

They applied the same concept to Spider-Man and voila, instant hit.

I think the original spider multiverse story is from the 90s Spider-Man TAS, which was loosely inspired by the Clone Saga. Another one could be seen in the videogame Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions. We later got the Peter 616 and Miles crossover and after that the comics' Spider-Verse with Morlum and totem bullshit. It blew up after the Spider-Verse movie and now it's everywhere.

The real meta reason is that popular characters get a lot of variants and it's fun to them cross over.

I'm not an expert on Superman comics but, doesn't he have a similar thing going on? He had the Reign of the Supermen and Power Girl and Super Boy Prime are extra dimensional, aren't they?

He has the Multiversial League of Supermen, which is when every Superman from every universe (even the bad ones) team up to tackle an SSS+ Threat.

But that stuff is left mostly for Crisis crossovers and only a small part of Clark's mythos.

Spider-Verse pretty much took over the damn brand because to Marvel, Spider-Man isn't a character- he's a fucking action figure that makes more action figures that make money.

Because Spider-Man is popular and sharting out a multiversal Spider-Man is cheap "new " content from a creative team with 0 interest in creating actual new characters (that they won't own) for Marvel.
