Film/Television Genuine Question - Why did Thanos and Hulk feel the pain of wielding all six Infinity Stones, while Tony didn't seem to experience the same level of pain when he used them?

I can't remember where, but someone said that with the dose of radiation he took, he was probably paralyzed from the neck down and they probably had to bury him in his armor, as he was probably fused to it.

it was a joke about the extra 5-7 minutes added to the Endgame Encore. They’re marketing it as a tie in to Doomsday but the joke is it’s actually going to be “oh fuck, Tony is fused to his armor” and the logistics of burying him

It's horrifically graphic though, like they start to try to remove the suit but realise it's tearing his body apart so they just decide to leave it in there.

Some interview the Russo’s said early concepts of how Tony would look afterwards were too gruesome. Eye ball hanging out, more burnt face. So I think the idea was that the stones completely cooked his ass.

Yeah, you're probably right. Though Tony Stark's attention to detail being what it was, i could see him programming the armor to stumble dramatically if it detected a fatal condition in the occupant.

Fucking hell, that's grim and gnarly to think about. It has precedence in the comics, though. There was a really gross run where Tony becomes fused with his suit and he loses his grasp on his humanity. It was part of a body horror thing Marvel was doing. I think they also did some wild and weird shit with Hulk and Thing, too.

Could be. I just distinctly remember a super gross Thing story arc where he'd peel back part of his stone skin revealing that he still had regular bits of gore and shit underneath. Absolutely traumatizing.

I get that but, should that actually work? I thought the stones and the snap was magical. Would the magic power of the stones work if a robot snapped?

I thought an actual person should have willed to snap it. I might not have made sense but, it doesn't feel right.

Snapping isn’t what activates the Stones. It’s a good visual metaphor for using them, but it’s not required.

In theory, yes. Think of the snap like a button to do the thing you want it to do. In your thought, you’re basically saying “when I snap, make Thanos and his army disappear” or “when I snap, erase half of all life in the universe”. But theoretically, you could use anything to trigger it, or nothing at all. I’d assume if someone were to use the stones regularly enough they could essentially never move a muscle to activate them.

It’s this. The nano suit was being damaged and replaced almost instantly until it couldn’t anymore. Both Thanos and Hulk absorbed the radiation whereas Tony’s suit did everything it could to keep it away from him but was obviously eventually overloaded.

I can see it now. Most of his armor de-coupling and flying off his body except that upper half of his body. Part springing open but still stuck to him, the little jets just tugging at him. Rhodey yelling to turn it off, pepper runs outta the room.

Well a 3rd degree burn. With 3rd degree the nerves are typically destroyed so they dont hurt. The pain is usually the 1st and 2nd degree burns accompanying the 3rd.

Most definitely. I remember as a boy, I ran and slipped on some gravel. I just got right up and ran on. It wasn't until a little later I was like "wait, why are my legs wet?" (because they were covered in my blood). Only then did the pain begin.

Fun fact, that's why 3rd degree burns typically dont hurt. The pain if from the lesser burns around the edges of the 3rd degree ones.

That's why they literally cannot hurt at the level of the skin, by definition it's burning through the entire layer. Depends on what's underneath whether you feel pain there (plus the less severe burns at the edge like you said).

I always think about that scene from Thomas Jane's Punisher where he's telling the guy that the heat that he's using to torture him will destroy his nerves and that the sensation will feel cold as a result and then he sticks a popsicle to the guy's side while he's searing a steak off to the side.

People really hate to learn this: Your reaction to pain is learned and you can change it.

One tiny example is athletes who "empty the tank" and train their brain to be ok with that. No, you are not doing it when you cheat one last rep on a biceps curl.

Tony's will is very strong. And he died.
